This drawing was recovered directly from Mouse's mother's house in Livonia, MI back in the mid 80's. Most of these early 60s formalized weirdo, hot-rod & monster drawings/figures were designs for models that were going to be produced by Monogram. They would get to this phase [final concept/pencil], get exposed to the public & used on T-shirts in Mouse's T-shirt catalog, then if it got popular, perhaps graduate to merchandising or get produced as a model.. [or ripped off by other imitators!], Anyway, most of the pieces in his Mom's basement were mildew damaged, but this is one of the few that emerged intact. Mouse was the foil to Big Daddy Ed Roth & his Rat-Fink empire... and they used to have "fueds" through their publications at Auto Shows & such.. Hawk commercialized on the terrain that Big Daddy & Mouse were "fighting" over when they came out with Weird-ohs, which were also merchandised, but mainly sold as figurines/models. Mouse went on to the Haight-Ashbury in the mid 60s and became a famous psychedelic poster artist doing posters for the hippie dance concerts at Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium & the Family Dog's Avalon Ballroom... later he partnered up with Alton Kelley to form Mouse! Studios & they produced many fine album covers, for the likes of Big Brother with Janis Joplin, Journey, the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention, & Steve Miller. Along with Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Wes Wilson & Rick Griffin, Mouse was part of the 'Big 5' poster artists & they achieved some international fame & glory gracing the pages of LIFE Magazine etc... This is a classic early Mouse Hot-Rod Weirdo design. They do not show up too often anymore. -- J. Mill Valley Oral History Program A collaboration between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library David Getz An Oral History Interview Conducted by Debra Schwartz in 2020 © 2020 by the Mill Valley Public Library TITLE: Oral History of David Getz INTERVIEWER: Debra Schwartz DESCRIPTION: Transcript, 60 pages INTERVIEW DATE: January 9, 2020 In this oral history, musician and artist David Getz discusses his life and musical career. Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer.

  • Jacaber-Kastor 2019.Pdf
Jacaeber Kastor: Psychedelic Sun By Carlo McCormick In turns perplexing, disorienting, wondrous and utterly beguiling, Jacaeber Kastor’s drawings make you look, look again and then still more, trying to find your way in their miasmic magic until at last, well, you discover the special pleasure of being truly lost. And when you think you’re done, when you’ve decoded the esoteric and abstract, conjured all the forms and meanings from these oceans of latency, answered the call of otherness as if it were the sphinx’s riddle- turn the work or flip your head, around and around, because there is no single perspective to read Kastor’s psychedelic topography: it is an entwined and constantly unfolding omniverse that has no right side up or upside down. If, in the course of your wanderings through Kastor’s meandering poetics of line and space, you come across the unexpected, the oddly familiar or the impossibly alien- for indeed you surely will, quite possible all at once with overwhelming simultaneity- and you ask yourself how did you even come to get here, you might also ask how indeed did this artist arrive at just such a place him- self. Make no mistake about it, Jacaeber Kastor is an intrepid voyager of body and mind, an adventurer without destination or designation, a man without return for even when he has somehow been there before he understands it as different, everything nuanced with the subtle shifts of impercep tible change, actuality always just beyond the tiny grasp of appearance, reason or replication. His art, like the convolutions of a restless mind guiding the inspired hand of uncertainty, is the tracings of a mind- traveler, a map to the nowhere that is everywhere, something so personally idiosyncratic that it marks a shared commons where likeness meets in a zone of compatible dissimilarity.

  • Introduction in Their Thirty Years Together, the Grateful Dead Forever
Introduction In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed, and shared. Founding members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, after incarnations as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks. Despite significant changes in the band’s lineup, including the addition of Mickey Hart and the death of Ron McKernan, the band played together until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead distinguished themselves by their preference for live performance, musical and business creativity, and an unprecedented dedication to their fans. Working musicians rather than rock stars, the Dead developed a distinctive sound while performing as latter-day American troubadours, bringing audio precision to their live performances and the spontaneity of live performances to their studio work. Side-stepping the established rules of the recording industry, the Dead took control of the production and distribution of their music. With a similar business savvy, they introduced strategic marketing innovations that strengthened the bond with their fans. This exhibition, the first extensive presentation of materials from the Grateful Dead Archive housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, testifies to the enduring impact of the Grateful Dead and provides a glimpse into the social upheavals and awakenings of the late twentieth century—a transformative period that profoundly shaped our present cultural landscape. Amalie R. Rothschild, Fillmore East Marquee, December 1969. Courtesy Amalie R. Rothschild Beginnings The Grateful Dead began their musical journey in the San Francisco Bay Area at a pivotal time in American history, when the sensibilities of the Beat generation coincided with the spirit of the burgeoning hippie movement.

What is it about having a complete set of something that is so satisfying? I have no idea, but I am an addict, that's for sure, which is not to suggest I don't collect posters in ones - singly. I am an addict for those too! But, let's just talk about sets. Before we get too far, let's be clear that aside from those sets numbered by the publisher, what constitutes a set is something more or less agreed upon by senior collectors, rather than a simple process of counting them up. There are very few numbered sets that are that simple. Even the so- called classic numbered sets of the Family Dog and Bill Graham Original Series are based on what collectors consider the numbered set, a particular set of posters, but not necessarily every piece of paper with 'Bill Graham Presents' on it.
