To the Reader

In response to the globalization of the business and the need for readily available data on world insurance, the Insurance Information Institute produces a Fact Book for inter- national insurance statistics.

We could not have undertaken this project without help from many organizations that collect international insurance data. We are especially grateful for the generous assistance of Axco Insurance Information Services (www.axcoinfo.com), a London-based insurance information service, and (www.swissre.com), which publishes the international research journal, sigma. The information included, which covers about 85 countries, comes from a variety of other sources as well. We have attempted to standardize the information as much as possible.

The updated book is presented each year at the annual seminar of the International Insurance Society (www.iisonline.org)

We hope you find this Fact Book useful.

World Overview

World Life and Nonlife Insurance in 2008 Outside the United States, the insurance industry is divided into life and nonlife or general insur- ance rather than life/health and property/casualty. According to the latest Swiss Re sigma study, world insurance premium volume grew 3.4 percent in 2008, reflecting a 2.0 percent rise in life insurance and a 5.5 percent rise in nonlife premiums. World insurance premiums totaled $4.27 trillion in 2008, up from $4.13 trillion the previous year. When adjusted for inflation (i.e., in “real terms”), 2008 global insurance premiums declined for the first time since 1980, down 2.0 percent. Global nonlife premiums fell 0.8 percent in real terms, and life insurance premiums dropped 3.5 percent.
