The Correspondence Colurin

The following letters have been received bg the Ott Jim Hone - Canberra College of Rdvanced Education - 52 2111 I am writing regarding sightings of feral pigs by your members. I am doing research on the distribution and control of feral pigs in Namadgi National Park

Recently I was reading Bushwalking near Canberra and noted on p. 82 in the Mt. Kelly walk that wild pigs may be seen. I have a specific question relating to that statement. Do you have any earlier sightings (which year?) of wild pigs in the Mt. Kelly area, or elsewhere in Namadgi? My question stems from my current attempts to map the spread of pigs through the park

It you could help me it would be greatly appreciated. 3

This is published in full below

Place Names in the Budawangs

I noted with interest the article in /7, March 1965 Place Names in the Budawangs by Frank Rugby and his invitation for further information and any corrections. Perhaps I can throw some light on the subject of change of names which I know has upset some people over the years Before the war, Herb Freeman of the Bushlanders' Club of 115W produced the first map of the Clyde River and part of the . fifter the war most features in the Budawangs were not named and so Ken fingel, to whom we owe a debt for his early maps of Mt. Pigeon House - The Castle June 1951, March 1952 and January 1958, placed some of the names on some of the features. However, when his January 1958 edition was published Roswaine and Pataird did not appear as well as 1lcines Ridge, Byatts Ridge, Bethom Head, Campus Head, Joanemla Halls and Mt. Stevard. Other names appeared on other features. ft considerable number of these names were from the 1952 & 1956 editions of Ken flngeYs maps which were featured on George Elliott's first edition map of 1960 and second edition, 1961 When I was in Sassafras in 196'4 Major Jim Sturgiss drew my attention to what he thought were errors on the 1963 edition of the map I gave him a map, to which he replied with a map and letter giving details if 3q places on the map. I wrote to Ken fingel on 27th Burst 1965, asking where the names came from on his maps, and asking for suggestions about naming some of the creeks and mountains He replied giving some details of names he had used, and also mentioned information from Drury's and the old fellow from Sassafras. Just prior to this it was decided to form a Nomenclature Committee of the Coast & Mountain Walkers of P45W members, and this was the basis of the formation of The Büdawang Committee. Information was gathered through research at The Mitchell Library, field books of surveyors at the archives section of The Public Library, old local identities were interviewed and Major Jim Sturgiss' information was investigated. The committee also found that Ken Angel had named some of the features after his friends and it was obvious the Geographical Names' Board would not accept these names. After much deliberation 15 names were submitted to the Geographical Names' Board on 30th October 1987. In July 1966 we wrote to Ken Angel on our findings and proposed name changes. A letter also went to Keith flenwick on 6th December 1966 on the proposed change of name. It must be remembered the Nomenclature Committee was guided by the Geographical Names' Board ruling regarding use of names. They never accepted our submission of Angel Falls, the board decided it was Crooked Falls on fingel Creek. (See Jan. 1967 and June 1966 editions of George Elliott's maps.) The third edition map came out in Jan. 1967 with the new names. The fourth edition map (June 1968) was published with the corrected names according to the Geographical Names' Board decisions. A note on this edition of the map stated that the Place Names on this map were assigned by the Lands' Department Notice of S February 1958. In September 1976 1 spoke to the Geographical Names' Board as to why the new names -. were not appearing on the CMA maps and I was told that all maps were gradually being corrected. The latest 125000 second edition Milton and Corang sheets are correct except that some of the names are in the wrong places (e.g. Trawalla Falls). Confusion has been caused by the late change of names by government departments and perhaps some explanation should have been made in Pigeon House and Beyond. May I comment on three of the names- Mount Fletcher now Don Jon Mountain was named after Ken Angel's wife. Beverly fletcher was her maiden name. In the first visitors' book (1960) on Mount Renwick now Mount Owen, it is recorded that an SBH party visited the mountain at Easter 1961. On 1st April it states I've arrived, Keith Renwick of the Keith and Yvonne Renwick combination after whom this mountain is named. Ken Angel states that he named it after my old mate Keith Renwick in L9SE. in a letter of ESth September 1965.

Ryangee Walls. The book Pigeon House and Beyond states - Apparently named by Ken Angel. Ken was unable to supply information on this name in 1966 so it appeared reasonable to say in the book Apparently named by Ken Angel. Frank Rugby's comments about the name are most interesting and historically helpfuL Ken Angel carried on good work in conservation in the New England district of NSW where Ken mentioned in his letter that he was a trustee of the Gibralter Range National Park in 1966. He served on this committee when it changed to the Gibralter flange National Park Advisory Committee and died while he was chairman on 14th May 196t Beverly Angel complimented The Budawang Committee on its achievement in publishing the book Pigeon House and Beyond. She said I hope your decision will be followed by others who recognise the necessity to collate A history of, and a guide to, other unique wilderness areas, having been encouraged by reading this wonderful book. The Budawang Committee has 3 publications on the way. It is up to us bushwalkers to gather the history of the wilderness areas of N514 before it is all lost Correspondence on these matters to and from Ken Angel, Beverly Angel, Keith flenwick, Major Jim Sturgiss, submission to Geographical Names' Board and maps may be viewed by interested parties. These documents are in the files of the Budawang Committee. Cohn Watson, Chairman The Budawang Committee 5

EDITOR'S NOTES

There is a new column heading in this if called The Correspondence Co/ama Previously letters, which may have been of interest to some members of the Club, have been received but because they were of little direct interest to the Club have been discussed by committee and no action taken. It is now proposed to summarise these letters in if so that members interested can take individual action if they wish. Because of Christmas, the closing day for the next IT will be Tuesday December Eth (Christmas Eve) so I would be grateful if articles could be in by then. Finally I would like to wish everyone all the best for Christmas and the New Year and I look forward to receiving lots of interesting contributions to if next year. Vance Brown

Wed October 30th - Abseiling Practice - flinslie Quarry About 30 people turned up at Ainslie Quarry after work to practise abseiling. All levels of expertise, from very experienced to complete novice, were represented Several ropes were quickly set up, including one for the beginners with only a short drop and we were soon gliding down these using a number of different abseil devices. Most of the beginners soon graduated to the longer ropes. As well as the practice there were demonstrations of how to use the various items of abseiling equipment and also of other techniques such as prussiking (going up a rope) and knot tying. I am sure that all the less exprienced abseilers found the evening very informative as it gave us a much better idea of what to expect On an abseiling trip. Many thanks to Kern-finn, Bob, Keith and Dave and all the other experienced abseilers who gave their time and provided equipment to make this such a successful practice. Vance Brown Sun November 24th - Long Point to Badger'5 Map: Caoura 1:25000 fin early start form Canberra had the party of 17 standing on Long Point Lookout at 9 am, looking down into the Shoalhaven Gorge which was still filled with fog after a cool night ft car had been placed at Badgery's Look6ut, about 6 km downsteam, for the return of the drivers. We set off along the knife edge ridge of Long Point as the sun was warming the air and evaporating the fog to reveal fine views of the river 500 metres below. Less pleasing was the view across the Barber's Creek to the South limestone quarry. ft gently graded descent brought us to the river at the junction of Barber's Creek and an encounter with a large and athletic brown snake. ft first swim to test the water showed that the river was flowing strongly and the water temperature was comfortable. The air temperature on wet slcin was however a bit too low for comfort. The walking party then set off along the bank while a flotilla of 6 lioes was launched into the stream. My first experience of lioing was approached with caution, but the river gave me little time to practise. I watched the others go into the first lot of rapids. It looked easy enough so down I went. I soon found myself riding up onto a barely submerged boulder and was then dumped into its wake. Amid panic and confusion I remembered Alan Vidler's fervent advice "don't let go of the lilo" so I hung on desperately keeping the lilo out in front and trailing my legs behind. I was swept on, over and around other mid-stream boulders and bounced in the pressure waves. I was soon in a calm pool below, shaken but not damaged and minus a hat. The other liloes and wailcers were now well down stream and it took me some hard paddling through still stretches to catch them by lunchtima

The lunch stop was called at about 12-30 pm on a sandy beach. By this time the air was warm and our benevolent leader allowed us till 2 pm for swimming, sunbaking and the sample of brews of exotic teas. I enjoyed the second stage of the river more, notwithstaning another dunking. There was more time for lying back and drifting through the calmer sections and looking at the bush on the walls of the gorge. fit the poo1 of Badgery's Spur the party regrouped for more swimming and exotic teas before our big effort of the day - a rather direct climb of about 500 metres up Badgery's Spur to the lookout.

It was a most enjoyable walk with a plenty of variety and thanks to our leader Capt. V. Brown, the transport manoeuvres worked out perfectly, apart from the minor hitch of one driver who forgot to turn off his parking lights after the fog at Goulburn. I will be looking forward to other river walks with lining. Mike Morris

November 16-17th - - Map: Caoura 1:25000 To go or not to go that was the question. Friday had been a dull showery day and more of the same was forecast so the debate on Friday night was whether we should go or not. Showing great lack of confidence in the weather bureau we chose to wait till morning and then decide. Saturday mOrning was misty but looked as if it might lift so we set off, there was intermittent cloud as we drove to Badgery's but the trend was towards improvement. By the time we got down to the river it was sunny and quite warm so morning tea was taken as well as the first swim in the strongly flowing Shoalhaven. After tea we had to cross the river and this involved another swim and was accomplished with the help of Woes which had been brought by some members of the party. We then started off towards Canoe Flat and the walkers watched enviously while the hloers glided effortlessly along the river. The 5 kilometres to 7

Canoe Flat were accomplished before lunch with little difficulty. Canoe flat is an excellent camping spot, there is a nice flat grassy campsite, a side creek (Billy Bulloc's) with drinkable water, a large sandy beach and a very good swimming hole. Under a clear blue sky it seemed a very suitable place to spend the afternoon so most of the party got down to some serious spine-bashing and tea drinking with the occasional visit to the water to cool of. f. (klan and Brian were a little more energetic and went for a stroll up Billy Bulloo's Canyon. The following morning the weather soon cleared again so some of the party explored the Canyon before setting off back to Badjery's Spur, By this time it had clouded over but the showers were very short lived and soon it was sunny again. It had been proposed to have lunch on the way but Badgery's was reached so quickly that we did not stop till we got there. finother couple of hours were spent relaxing, tea drinking and swimming before we started the long haul up fill the members of the party seemed to enjoy the trip and were very glad it was not cancelled. Many thanks to Rod for leading this most enjoyable walk along a very attractive part of the Shoalhaven River. Vance Brown

14ftW< flflJH December 21-29th - New England Tableland - Canyoning and possibly rafting This is an interesting trip to the biggest canyon systems in Eastern flustralia such as Chandler and Wdllombi. There are waterfalls of about 800 ft and a total drop of about 3000 ft. These trips should take about 2 days each. The rest of the time will be spent rafting on nearby , fill people wishing to come should be competent abseilers equipped with prussiking gear, and should contact Dave Drohan on 4L3566(h) or 6630e9(w). My home number is 41.7862. Rene Lays Sun Januarg 12th Tuross Cascades and Tuross Falls Maps: Cobargo 17100000 & Belowra 1:25000 This walk involves a walk along a fire trail to the cascades, the length of which will depend on the state of the road, and how far we can take the cars. Tuross Cascades has a number of small waterfalls and rock pools the largest of which provides good swimming. If the river level is not too high there is also a natural waterslide into this pooL There will also be an optional trip to the lookout point at Tuross Falls, a spectacular waterfall if the river is high. The vantage point offers a view down the impressive Tuross Gorge. The walk to the falls (about P. 1cm) will involve some scrub before another fire trail is reached a short distance from the falls. We will then return to the cascades for another swim and/or cup of tea before returning to the cars. The grade to the cascades is short/easy and if the falls are included it is medium/medium.
