Variable frequencies, variable and value labels, and missing values have been checked. If neces- sary, the data have been anonymised. The codebook contains information on data content, structure and data collection, and includes a list of publications wholly or in part based on the data, according to publication informa- tion received by the FSD. The second part of the codebook contains information on variables: question texts, response options, and frequencies. The third part contains indexes. Variable distributions presented in this codebook have been generated from the SPSS files. Dis- tribution tables present variable values, frequencies (n), frequency percentages (%), and valid percentages (v. %) which take into account missing data. All distributions are unweighted. If the data contain weight variables, these will be found at the end of the variables list. In some cases frequency distributions have been substituted by descriptive statistics. Categorised responses to open-ended questions are not always included in the codebook. Distributions may contain missing data. The note "System missing (SYSMIS)" refers to missing observations (e.g. a re- spondent has not answered all questions) whereas "Missing (User missing)" refers to data the user has defined as missing. For example, the user may decide to code answer alternatives ’don’t want to say’ or ’can’t say’ as missing data. The codebook may contain attached files, the most common one being the questionnaire. The surveys were carried out every four years from 1994 to 2010 separately for adult population aged 19 - 65 and for younger persons aged 3 - 18. Topics covered include to what extent and how often Finns take part in sporting or recreational physical activities, what types of sport they do, the role of sports organisations, and willingness to try out new sports. Some questions focus on voluntary work carried out for sports clubs and other organisations, participation in sports events and competitions, and sport spectatorship. In this respect, the scope of the study is extended from exercising habits to citizen participation in sports. As Finland has four distinct seasons, the data were collected year round to ensure that all types of sport are equally included. Data collection was carried out by Gallup Finland. The surveys were commissioned by, among others, the Finnish Sports Federation (SLU) and the Young Finland Association in co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Culture. Abstract This survey investigated the sporting activities of Finnish children and young people aged be- tween 3 and 18: how much they exercise and in what sports they participate. Respondents’ attitudes towards sports organisations in Finland were also charted. Parents answered on behalf of children under 12 years old, and young people aged 12-18 were interviewed in person. Firstly, participation in sport both within and outside of sports organisations was surveyed. One question focused on how often children and young people exercised. The sports facilities mostly used were charted. A set of questions covered various aspects of sporting activities undertaken in a sports organisation or club (which organisation, type of sport, duration and frequency of the activity, number of years they had participated, etc.) Respondents were also asked how often they would prefer to exercise that sport. Same type of questions were asked about sporting and physical activities taken outside of sports organisations. 2 1.3. Structure and collection of the data Respondents not involved in sports organisations were asked whether they would like to take part in organised sports in a sports organisation, and if so, what forms of sport they would undertake and how often. The attitudes of young people aged between 12 and 18 towards sports organisations in general were studied. One topic covered participation in sports competition. Parents or other caretakers of children aged between 3 and 11 were asked whether they had found sports organisations lacking in certain aspects, for example, should children have more free time, is the organisation too competition-oriented, should there be more variety in types of activity, and are children’s and parents’ wishes taken into account. Background variables included respondents’ age, gender, county and municipality of residence, and the number of children aged under 18 in the household. Parents/guardians of children aged between 3 and 11 were asked about the occupation of the household member with the highest income. 1.3 Structure and collection of the data Country: Finland Geographic coverage: Finland Analysis or observation unit type: Individual Universe: Children and young people aged between 3 and 18 living in Finland, excluding the Åland Islands Collection date: March 2001 – February 2002 Data collector(s): Gallup Finland Mode of data collection: Telephone interview Type of research instrument: Structured questionnaire Time period covered: 2001 – 2002 Time method of the data collection: Longitudinal: Trend/Repeated cross-section Number of variables and cases: The data contain 943 variables and 5531 cases. Sampling procedure: Probability: Multistage Multistage stratified sampling. The data were collected in two stages, so that the 3-11-year-olds and the 12-18-year-olds formed two different samples. Respondents were randomly drawn from a national household telephone directory. To guarantee regional representativeness quotas based on place of residence and type of municipality were used. Only one interview was conducted in each household, even if there were more than one child of the appropriate age. Children under 12 years old were randomly selected. If there were several children aged between 3 and 11 in the household, then the parent/guardian answered on behalf of the child whose birthday was next after the interview date. The selection of young people (aged between 12 and 18) was based on quota sampling. Quotas were based on age and gender. The questionnaires were identical for both sample groups. 3 1.
