Godinez (producer) STAT OF THE WEEK TB Rodney Stewart rushed for a career-high 175 yards in CU’s 52-45 loss to Kansas; he also had 44 receiving yards to give him a personal best 219 all- purpose yards, and earned 11 first downs (nine rushing/two receiving). The fact is, “Speedy” has been a first down machine, earning 59 on the season to date, 48 on the ground and 11 through the air, with 24 of those coming on third and/or fourth down plays. He’s earned almost one out of every three first downs for CU as a team (68 percent of the rushing first downs), and he is personally responsible for a third of the conversions on third and fourth down (24 of 73), including a 22-of-27 mark on third-fourth down rushing tries (15-of-17 on third/fourth-and-one). OBSCURE NOTE OF THE WEEK Brian Cabral takes over as interim head coach for the final three games of the season; he’s second interim head coach in CU history, as Mike Hankwitz served in the capacity for the 2005 Champs Sports Bowl after replacing Gary Barnett earlier that same month. The Buffs lost that game, 19-10 to Clemson, so Hankwitz was 0-1, but with only three weeks between Barnett’s dismissal and the bowl game, CU added that game to Barnett’s record. We might revisit that, as the remaining three this year will go under Cabral. Thus, his debut as coach on November 13, which will be the second latest date a CU coach will debut in a regular season. The last 15 minutes of the Tuesday and Wednesday practices are open to the media and for any photography/video needs (just follow all parameters listed in CU’s media policies). In a tradition to bring good weather, non-hazardous course conditions and a lack of serious crashes, a devil statue is carried through Mürren on Friday night as a fiery sacrifice to the race gods. Mürren Inferno 075 Words Kelley McMillan Photos Bruno Petroni ut of the darkness, the devil emerges. Cast in the rosy glow of hundreds of torches, he floats through Mürren, Switzerland’s cobblestone streets, past 19th-century farmhouses and sleds propped up outside of pubs. Cowbells clang in Otime with the marching band that trails behind the horned effigy. Hundreds of children, villagers and amateur ski racers—some wearing devil masks, others carrying candles—join the procession, winding through the village in a fiery snake toward the devil’s final resting ground. He is going to burn. It is a clear, very cold night in late January on the eve of the 02 Inferno, one of the oldest and longest downhill races in the world. The next day, many of these revelers will descend nine miles from near the summit of the Schilthorn, the 9,744-foot peak that rises above Mürren, down 6,463 feet into Lauterb- runnen, a traditional Walser village-turned-BASE-jumping mecca at the bottom of the valley. The Walsers are a group of Germans who migrated into the Swiss Alps more than 700 years ago, who still speak a unique version of the language and hold to a very definitive, mountain-specific culture—a perfect finish for a historic race.

I say "I was a skier in my life before graduate school, when I had more time and a paycheck." This project has allowed me to explore Colorado's ski areas from the inside out, through their history, design, and marketing as well as their lifts, lodges, and trails.     television appearances Colorado has appeared on either national or regional television 227 times since the 1951 season, posting a 107-117-3 record in these games (52-40-2 in Boulder). The Buffaloes have been on national TV a total of 140 times, owning a 62-75-3 record (33-22-2 in Boulder). Since 1990, the Buffaloes have been one of the most televised teams in the nation, as 178 of their 257 games (69 percent) have been broadcast either nationally or regionally. The first appearance on TV by Colorado was in 1951, as the Nebraska game in Lincoln on Nov. 17 was broadcast to 19 states in the central part of the nation as part of the NCAA television testing program; an estimated 8-to- 10 million people watched the Buffs win in impressive fashion. An interesting fact is that the first college football game ever televised on ESPN involved Colorado, as the fledgling cable network broadcast the Oregon-CU game on Sept. 8, 1979.
