So what’s like to be in the firing line? It’s certainly a different experience, particularly when there are difficult decisions to be taken and the buck stops at your door. Senator Gorst freely admits that there are many new balances to be struck. “You have to believe you’re taking decisions you feel are the right ones, aware that you can’t please everyone, and that the majority aren’t always the most vocal.” His years spent as a Parish Deputy provided an extremely valuable preparation for high office as it enabled him to experience the direct effect of decisions on people’s lives. Ian admits he needed all his diplomatic skills to persuade his mother about how that could be reconciled. And it doesn’t end there. They have to be available to discuss their assessments with ratepayers. They operate completely independent from the Connétable, whose own house and garden don’t escape their unwavering scrutiny. Nobody actually likes paying rates, but no rates means no Parish services, as we all know, despite being a small Above: The line-up of Inspectors; these are the ‘foot soldiers’ who, as the Parish, there’s a lot us to be looked after. new Parish officials name implies, walk the roads and act as the eyes of the Committee, reporting at regular intervals on any Below: The team’ on patrol at the new development at Le Squez: Albert Brown, work needed or infringements of the law. So there’s a financial responsibility involved too. And they’ve proved they’re a pretty nimble bunch too, springing into action as ‘tree marshalls’, supervising a speedy clear-up after the storm just before Christmas. Kerry Blandin, Glen Hamel and Mark Matthew were elected to serve on the Roads Committee for the next three years. The election for Roads Inspectors resulted in a mixture of new and familiar faces. St Clément Parish Magazine page10St Clément Parish Magazine page10 Out of of the the frying pan….. frying pan….. Back in 2006, a small but poignant ceremony was held on the Albert Pier to commemorate the events of June 1940, when thousands of Islanders were faced with probably the most agonising decision they ever had to take. With the demilitarisation of the Channel Islands, their choice was a stark one - remain in the Island as it faced the prospect of occupation by hostile forces or seek refuge across the sea in England. Some of those choosing to go had to endure taunts of ‘rats and rabbits’, and certainly faced huge uncertainties both during the crossing and in their new sanctuary. Moreover, at first only women and children were being accepted for evacuation, so to escape meant the separation of family members. As the situation became more desperate, men too departed – some to join their families, others to enlist in the armed forces. One young man arrived at the Harbour only to see the gangway being lifted. His reaction was to take a flying leap onto the deck of the vessel as it prepared to depart. Among the group remembering the more than six thousand evacuees was Jean Maclaughlin, who’d left with her parents in 1940 and returned in a howling gale in 1945. Prompted by the former Lieutenant Governor, Sir Andrew Ridgeway, she set about collecting the memories of those who’d also been forced into exile. Her research resulted in a book entitled simply Jersey Evacuees Remember. It chronicles the experiences of those who left their beloved Island for a life of new experiences, including hardship and separation – and the joy and relief of returning home. The book, published by the Jersey Evacuees Association, is readily available in town bookshops. It contains many illustrations and has proved such a popular choice that there are already plans for a second edition. The editors are very keen to hear more accounts from Islanders who may also have taken that trip into the unknown. If you’d like to contribute to this important slice of island history, please contact June Le Gros 724794.
