FRIENDS’ CENTRAL REPEATS AS CHAMPION IN A THRILLER

Before a wildly enthusiastic SRO crowd, Friends’ Central pulled away in the third quarter of the championship game against ANC at Haverford College on February 11th and then held on as the Lions forged a strong comeback before the Phoenix eventually won 52-48. Devin Coleman paced the winners with 17 points, while Malique Killing added 13 (3 threes) and Amile Jefferson had 12. Marcus Gilbert came off the bench to pace ANC with 18 points including 3 threes and an impressive dunk. The game was close through the first half with the Phoenix leading by 3 points after one period and by 2 at the midway point. The winners stretched their lead to as many as 14 points in the 3rd stanza, but stalled when Jefferson picked up his fourth foul less than a minute before the end of the period. With Jefferson on the bench ANC began to get back into the game and just after he returned to the floor with about 3:30 remaining, the Lions tied the score at 47 on a three ball by Jonathan Riles. A basket for the Phoenix and a for the Lions put the score at 49-48 with Karonn Davis on the line. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Jefferson snuck around the Lions, grabbed the and put it back in for a key basket. After a missed three by ANC, Jefferson was fouled and made one of two freethrows to ice the win. Friends’ Central reached the championship game with a 58-34 win over Westtown on Tuesday, February 9th. The hosts pulled away from a 10 point advantage after three periods with a 25-11 final quarter burst. Coleman led the way with 17 points, while Killing had 15 and Jefferson 12. Daniel Ochefu paced the Quakers with 14 points. The trip to the championship game was not so easy for ANC, who needed overtime to top Abington, 54-51. The Lions went on a 10-2 run at the end of regulation to catch the ‘roos and force the extra period. Savon Lloyd-Goodman led the Lions with 21 points. Rakeem Christmas added 12 points and 20 rebounds. Dinjiyl Walker netted 11 and Gilbert added 10 for the winners. Joey Gripper took game scoring honors for Abington with 26 points, while Jabril Trawick netted 19, despite sitting out much of the first half with three fouls. All four playoff teams plus Shipley will compete in the PA Independent Schools tournament this week.

PLAYOFFS SET: REGULAR SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE

Number 1 seed Friends’ Central will host #4 Westtown and #2 Academy of the New Church will host #3 Abington Friends on Wednesday, February 9th. The games will begin at 5:30. During the regular season Friends’ Central beat Westtown 56-42 and ANC topped Abington 42-34. Two of four scheduled games were played on Tuesday, February 1st. Host Friends’ Central edged Abington 56-50, overcoming a 4 point deficit in the final period. Amile Jefferson led the Phoenix with 20 points including 14 of the team’s 18 points in the opening frame. Conrad Chambers added 13 points and Devin Coleman had 12 points and 11 boards for the winners. Joey Gripper paced the ‘roos’ attack with 14 points, while Kenny Johnson had 12 and Jabril Trawick 11. At Westtown the hosts defeated Germantown 66-42, cruising after a 39-16 halftime advantage. Daniel Ochefu led the winners with 14 points and Peter McCloskey added 12. Jesse Smith led the Tigers with 13 points, while Tyler Clauson-Wolf contributed 10. Two makeup games were played on February 3rd. Visiting Westtown locked up the fourth place playoff spot with a 60-33 win at Moorestown. The Quakers pulled away from a close halftime lead of only 6 points, by outscoring the Foxes 32-11 in the second half. Ochefu led the way for the winners with 21 points (15 in the second half). Longi Yiljip added 14 points for the visitors. Jake Brown paced the Foxes with 12 points. At Bryn Athyn, ANC pulled away from a 28-21 halftime advantage to top Shipley 68-47. Savon Lloyd-Goodman led 4 Lions in double figures with 17 points. Rakeem Christmas added 12 (and 10 boards), while Marcus Gilbert and Dinjiyl Walker each had 10. Ky Howard led the Gators with 16 and Isaiah Baker chipped in with 11. On Friday, February 4th host Shipley topped Germantown 52-23 winning every quarter. The winners were led by Howard with 16 points, making him the all-time Shipley career scoring leader. Chima Nwakpuda had 14 points and John Carney 10 for the hosts, while Nic Rittler led the Tigers with 8. The final two regular season league games were made up on Monday, February 7th. Abington topped Germantown at home by a 72-51 margin. Jabril Trawick with 21 and Kenny Johnson with 20 led 10 ‘roos in the scoring column. Gilman Myran paced the Tigers with 15 points. Moorestown opened up a 29-12 halftime lead on the way to a 57-45 win at Friends Select. Bryce Langlotz led the Foxes with 14 points, while Curran Ellis and Dan Richards each contributed 10. Brett Nagle led all scorers with 21 points for the Falcons.

THREE TEAMS MAKE THE PLAYOFFS: FOURTH SPOT UP FOR GRABS

On Monday, January 24th ANC and George School made up a game postponed from January 11th. The host Lions had their way with the Cougars by a 94-39 margin. The Lions put 5 of 10 scorers in double figures, led by Dinjyl Walker with 18. Savon Lloyd-Goodman, Jon Riles and Marcus Gilbert each had 14 and Rakeem Christmas contributed 10. Three games were played on Tuesday the 25th. Host Friends’ Central topped Westtown 56-42. The Phoenix scored 14 points in each quarter, while ‘town tallied 10 in each of the first two periods and 11 in each of the final two. The hosts had a balanced attack with 5 players scoring between 8 and 15 points. Karron Davis led the way with 15 on 5 three-balls, while Amile Jefferson netted 13 and Devin Coleman had 11. Daniel Ochefu led Westtown with 14 points. Abington traveled to Moorestown and took home a 68-45 win. After opening a 16-11 1st quarter advantage, the ‘roos outscored the Foxes 48-25 in the middle two periods to put the game away. Kenny Johnson paced the winners with 36 points, including 13 in each of the second and third periods. Jabril Trawick had 14 and Joey Gripper had 10 for the winners. Dan Richards topped Moorestown’s scorers with 10 points. The final contest on the 25th saw Shipley top visiting George School 52-19. Ky Howard had 18 points and Chima Nwakpuda added 10 for the Gators. Trevor Stone paced the Cougars with 7 points. Friday January 28th saw a full league slate played. ANC easily beat host Germantown 87-26. Walker led the Lions with 19 points (4 threes). Lloyd- Goodman added 13 and Marcus Gilbert 12. Gilman Myran and Jesse Smith each had 6 for the Tigers. Visiting Shipley beat Moorestown 59-40. Howard led all scorers with 29. Nwakpuda added 13 and Isaiah Baker had 12 for the winners. Curran Ellis led the Foxes with 11 points. Host Friends’ Central jumped out to 47-24 halftime lead over George School on the way to a 77-41 win. Coleman led all scorers with 25 points (20 by halftime). Jefferson added 11 for the Phoenix, while Kirk Wynn netted 11 for the Cougars. In a game with important playoff seeding implications, visiting Abington rebounded from a 22-14 halftime deficit with a 21-4 3rd quarter burst to set up a 48-41 win over Westtown. Trawick led all scorers with 25 points (12 in the 3rd period). Johnson added 10 for the ‘roos and Ochefu paced ‘town with 13 points. With one more week of the regular season yet to play out, Friends’ Central, ANC and Abington have clinched playoff berths, with Westtown and Shipley in contention for the final spot. FRIENDS’ CENTRAL GOES TO 5-0 IN LEAGUE PLAY

On Tuesday, January 18th four league games were played. Moorestown visited Germantown and blanked the hosts in the first quarter, jumping out to a 13-0 advantage. The Tigers clawed back and tied the game with 16 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, forcing one and then another overtime, before winning 43-40. Gilman Myran led the hosts with 21 points including 7 in the overtimes. Jake Brown paced the Foxes, who struggled from the charity stripe, with 10 points. At George School the hosts scored 24 points in the second period and 29 in the final stanza as they pulled away from a 3 point lead after 3 quarters to top Friends Select 78-65. Both teams sparkled on the free throw line. For the hosts Kirk Wynn (31 points) and Jeff Huang (12 points) each made 9 of 10 free throws as the Cougars went 20-24 as a team. For the Falcons (19-24 from the stripe) Brett Nagle went 8-10 as he scored 21 points and Ben Holl (5 three balls and 27 points) went 6-7. Greg Cohen and Sam Kauker each had 10 points for the winners. At Friends’ Central the hosts pulled away from a 10-10 first quarter tie to lead at the half 29-21 before Shipley pulled back to with 4 points (37-33) after 3 frames. Then Malique Killing took over for the Phoenix as he scored 15 of his game-high 26 points in the final quarter to lead the hosts to a 59-46 win. Killing knocked down 3 treys and was 9-9 from the line. Amile Jefferson added 13 points for the Phoenix. Ky Howard with 15 points and Chima Nwakpuda with 13 led the Gators. ANC used stout defense to hold host Westtown to 36 points, 14 below their season average, on the way to a 49-36 victory. Malcolm Gilbert scored 12 points for the Lions while focusing on stopping ‘town’s high-scoring Daniel Ochefu. Jon Riles led the winners with 14 points including 4 of 5 free throws to ice the game in the final minute. Ochefu led the hosts with 10 points. On Friday, January 21st Friends’ Central jumped out to a 30-8 halftime lead over host Moorestown on the way to a 54-39 win. Devin Coleman led 10 Phoenix scorers with 14 points and Killing added 12. Brown led the Foxes with 16 points and Dan Richards added 10. At Germantown the Tigers used an 18-9 second quarter and a 12-6 final period to top friends Select 45-37. Tyler Clauson-Wolf and Will Randall led the winners with 9 points each, while Steve Bonitatibus pulled down 17 rebounds. Nagle again led the way for the Falcons with 22 points. The final contest on the 21st saw Westtown take a Patterson Cup point from host George School by a 54-22 margin. The winners were paced by Ochefu with 15 and Yilret Yiljep and Eli Abrams each with 11. Wynn and Greg Cohen each had 9 points for the Cougars. On Saturday, January 22nd host Abington overcame an 11-5 first quarter deficit with a 21-9 second quarter burst and then pulled away to a 60-40 win over Shipley. Joey Gripper led the ‘roos with 19 points, including 11 in the pivotal 2nd quarter. Jabril Trawick scored 16, Kenny Johnson 12 and Dylan Moody 11 for the winners. Nwakpuda led the Gators with 15 points and Ky Howard added 14.

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL AND WESTTOWN REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE PLAY

On Friday, January 7th ANC hosted Abington and prevailed in a low-scoring game, 42-34. The Lions led 24-19 at the half, but the ‘roos tied it up at 27 after three periods before the hosts used a 15-7 advantage in the final stanza to secure the win. Dinjiyl Walker paced the winners with 12 points, while 5 other Lions tallied 6 points apiece. Jabril Trawick led Abington with 10 points. Also on the 7th, Moorestown jumped out to a 29-15 halftime advantage on the way to a 54-37 win over visiting George School. The Foxes were led by Curran Ellis with 15 points and Bryce Langlotz with 12. Trevor Stone paced the Cougars with 11 points. In addition, Shipley travelled to Friends Select and took home a 69-36 win after opening a 44-19 halftime advantage. Isaiah Baker had a game high 22 points for the Gators who also got 17 points from Chima Nwakpuda and 14 from Ky Howard. The Falcons were paced by Brett Nagle with 15 and Alex Hughes with 10. The final game on the 7th saw host Germantown put forth its best quarter of basketball of the year, but unfortunately for the Tigers it was against the second-ranked Phoenix of Friends’ Central and thus they still trailed 26-17 after the first period on the way to a 79-44 FCS win. Malique Killing nailed 5 threes in the first period to offset 12 first quarter points from the Tigers’ Gilman Myran. Killing ended with 20 points, while Devin Coleman notched 24 and Amile Jefferson had 22 for the winners. Myran ended with 14 points and Henry Bushnell added 12 for the Tigers. With a snowstorm on the way, three games scheduled for Tuesday the 11th were postponed. ANC will now host George on 1/24 and the new dates for Abington-Germantown and Moorestown-Westtown are yet to be set. One game was played and saw visiting Friends’ Central take a 52-24 lead after 3 quarters, on the way to a 67-53 win over Friends Select. Jefferson led the way for the Phoenix with 17 points (11 in the first period). Coleman added 13 and Richard Jennings had 10 for the winners. The Falcons had only three players score, but they all reached double figures. Nagle led the way with 21 and Craig Presant and Ben Holl each added 16. Holl had 4 threes and Presant was 7-7 from the foul line. George School earned their first win of the season on Thursday, January 13th with a 54-43 homecourt win over Germantown. Kirk Wynn paced the Cougars with 25 points while Myran paced the Tigers with 9. Also on the 13th, host Abington outscored Select in every quarter on the way to an 80-35 victory. The ‘roos were led by Trawick with a season high 34 points, while Joey Gripper added 16 and Dylan Moody had 11. The Falcons were paced by Hool and Nagle with 11 each. On Friday the 14th ANC topped visiting Moorestown 62-22, outscoring the Foxes 22-4 in the first quarter. Walker again led the way for the Lions with 16, while Savon Lloyd-Goodman added 13 to the cause. Also on the 14th, visiting Westtown won a low-scoring game at Shipley by a score of 36-27. Westtown opened an 11-3 advantage after the first quarter, but the Gators closed to within 25-20 after 3 periods before the Quakers pulled away in the final stanza. FRIENDS’ CENTRAL TOPS ANC IN SEASON OPENER

Three games were played in December to open the 2010-11 season. On Tuesday the 14th visiting Abington topped George 68-38 behind 30 points from senior Jabril Trawick and 23 from classmate Kenny Johnson. Senior Kirk Wynn led the Cougars with 9 points. Also on the 14th host Westtown jumped out to a 38-22 halftime lead on the way to a 77-40 win over Friends Select. Junior Lenny Klein knocked down 7 threes to lead all scorers with 21 points. Junior Daniel Ochefu added 14 and freshman Floyd Preito had 13 for the winners, while senior Brett Nagle had 17 and classmate Craig Presant added 14 for the Falcons. On Wednesday the 15th in a rematch of last year’s semifinal, visiting Friends’ Central outscored ANC in each quarter and topped the Lions 47-35. The Phoenix led by 24-19 at the half and steadily pulled away in the second half. Senior Devin Coleman led the way for the winners with 19 points. Junior Amile Jefferson added 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Marcus Gilbert came off the bench to lead the Lions with 12 points, while last year’s league scoring leader, Savon Lloyd-Goodman was held to just two points by the tenacious Phoenix defense. Going into the game ANC was ranked #2 in the area by the Inquirer and Friends’ Central was #5. The first game in January was played on Tuesday the 4th. Visiting ANC won each quarter on the way to a 94-45 victory over Friends Select. The Lions had 9 players score at least 6 points, with five of them in double figures. Goodman led the way with 18, followed by Dinjiyl Walker with 16, Malcolm Gilbert and Jon Riles each with 11 and Rakeem Christmas and Daniel Pittman each with 10. Nagle had a game-high 26 points for the Falcons including 9-11 from the foul line. In early season tournament action ANC won two of three games at the State Farm tournament in Illinois over Thanksgiving break. One of the wins was over nationally top-ranked Findlay Prep of Nevada. In the FSL-MAPL showdown Westtown, Friends’ Central and Abington went 5-1 against Mercersburg, Hill and Peddie. Abington won their tournament, while Westtown won the Bullis tournament in Maryland and the Primetime ESCIT Tournament.
