CEO Meg Whitman and founder Jeffrey Katzenberg used the company’s CES keynote Wednesday to dispel any consumer skepticism regarding Quibi, calling it the world’s first mobile-only premium entertainment platform. “Mobile phones are the most widely-distributed, democra- tized entertainment platform the world has ever seen,” Katzenberg said. The idea behind the platform is to deliver movie- quality experiences in quick bites (known as Quibis) for Millennial and Gen Z audiences that take advantage of all of the capabilities modern smartphones offer. To do so, Quibi had to tackle the usual challenges that come with mobile viewing, including the inability to watch content in both portrait and landscape modes. “It means creating a technology platform optimized for people on the go and giving them a great entertainment experience in those in-between moments,” Whit- man said. “We’re not shrinking TV onto phones. We’re creating something new.” Chief product officer Tom Conrad took to the stage to unveil Turnstyle, a new way to watch that allows viewers to move between a full-screen landscape mode and a full-screen portrait mode experience at any time. Conrad illustrated Turnstyle by showing the short film “Nest.” When the phone was held in portrait mode, viewers were able to see an intruder trying to break into a woman’s house through her Google Nest doorbell camera. -

Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. SIRIUS Satellite Radio Hires Dynamic Radio Industry Advertising Executives Sam Benrubi, Stephen Smith To Form Cornerstone for Building SIRIUS' Ad Sales Team SIRIUS Committed to Building Ad Revenue on its Sports, Talk, Traffic, News, and Entertainment Channels NEW YORK - February 24, 2005 - SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) today announced that it hired two of the radio industry's most respected and accomplished advertising executives, Sam Benrubi and Stephen Smith, to help build advertising revenue on its non-music channels. SIRIUS provides 65 channels of 100% commercial-free music; SIRIUS does offer commercial time to advertisers on its more than 55 talk, traffic, news, sports and entertainment channels. The appointments follow key programming announcements that enhance advertisers' ability to buy time on SIRIUS to reach a national audience. Recent programming announcements include this week's announcement that SIRIUS will be the new home of NASCAR in 2007; SIRIUS will sell all advertising time on its NASCAR channel and during the race broadcasts. "Sam and Steve are two of the best radio advertising sales executives in the country, with deep experience in broadcast advertising sales related to sports, Howard Stern, and other prominent talk show personalities," said Scott Greenstein, SIRIUS President of Entertainment and Sports. "Their appointments are an important part of the next step in the growth of SIRIUS, following our acquisition of significant programming assets that now allow SIRIUS promising advertising revenue possibilities. Like many others, he and the cast of The Bobby Bones Show have been locked out of their workplace for over a month as they deal with a complete upheaval of their lives … but unlike the rest of us, he’s in a position to help brighten these dark times. “I’m lucky I get to work,” Bones tells Sounds Like Nashville, chatting by phone the morning after still more disorder – an overnight storm which downed power lines in his yard, killing power and forcing him back to the office for the first time since stay-at-home orders were given. “I’m trying to maintain a sense of normalcy so if people want to check in, even though it’s not normal, you can listen to the radio show and still feel normal. … I think my job is to be consistent in an inconsistent time.” But for a guy who’s also a rising TV star, a best-selling author, a successful touring musician and a dedicated philanthropist, consistency means trying new things. With that in mind, Bones has somehow found a way to launch yet another project – an internet-based gameshow fittingly titled Super Easy Trivia. Simultaneously one of the lowest low-budget gameshows in recent memory, and one of the most engaging, accessible and entertaining, it finds Bones doing his best makeshift-Bob Barker, taking over a Zoom chat with his shaky home-Internet connection and a handful of contestants to do just what its title suggests – answer super easy trivia questions. -
