The and Their Origins

By: Alex Mical, Peter Farah, Nicholas Randall How many moons does Have?

Mars has two moons named and .

● Named after the greek demigods of fear and panic. ● Phobos- “Fear” “Phobos” ● Deimos- “panic” “Mars”

“Deimos” Phobos Part 1

Phobos was discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall, but nearly two centuries earlier, they were written about in a book by Jonathan , called Gulliver's Travels. Even earlier than that Kepler had guessed that Mars had two moons. Phobos was named after the demigod of fear. Phobos is the larger of the two moons with a radius of 7 miles. Phobos Part 2

Phobos was to small and didn't have enough gravity to pull itself into spherical shape. Phobos has cracks in it which implies that it may have been struck by a large enough object that it almost split in two. Phobos is getting closer to Mars by 6 feet every hundred years, at the rate it is going, it will either crash into Mars in about 50 million years, or break up into a ring Deimos Part 1

Deimos, like Phobos, was discovered August 11, 1877 by Asaph Hall. Deimos was named after the demigod of Panic. Deimos is the smaller of the two moons with a radius of 3 miles. The craters on the are only about 1.6 miles in diameter. Typically when a meteorite hits a surface, surface material is thrown up and out of the resulting crater. The material usually falls back to the surface surrounding the crater. Deimos Part 2

Deimos is a dark body that appears to be composed of C - type surface materials, similar to that of found in the outer belt. It takes about 30.3 hours for Deimos to orbit Mars. Deimos is much further away from Mars than Phobos, 23,460 km away. How did these moons form

Scientist believe that the two moons originated from asteroids that were captured in mars orbit. This is because the material that the moons are made up of which is called “carbonaceous chondrite” is the same material that makes up other asteroids. Not only that but the irregular shape of the moons matches the irregular shape of most asteroids. This is why scientist believe that these moons are actually captured asteroids.
