12_pager_December_2014_.indd 1 11/12/2014 16:39:02 < Y A word from the Ă : t Head and Deputies... ů t Ŭ ů ' As the term slowly comes to an end, I think this is a good time to reflect on all the positive achievements we have Ő seen at George Mitchell School since September. In the primary, staff and students have seen the benefits of the ƚ ‘Success for All’ Literacy programme and the PE curriculum introduced by Mr Burke. Our primary parents have set ŝ up a ‘Parent Teacher and Friends Association’ aimed at raising funds to improve the school and they have already Ă held two successful community events - the Summer fair in September and the Winter fair in December. In the Ɖ secondary, we have had several exciting drop days and a wonderful day trip to Lille for MFL students in year 10 and Ŷ 11. We have also started the ‘Team Up Saturday school’ to help our students prepare themselves for their GCSE exams. There is alot more going on at George Mitchell School. Follow us on Twitter at @GMATSchool and www. georgemitchellschool.co.uk and you will be able to hear more news and success stories about the life of the school. Belinda Chapple We are always looking for new effective ideas to advance teaching and learn- 1 ing. So far this year we have developed ways for children to show they are mak- 1 ing good progress in lessons; strategies to make work accessible for different levels t of learners; making sure our assessments about children are detailed; and look- W ing at how we can support our children who are developing English. We have also t introduced a new Literacy Marking Code which helps students find errors with A things like punctuation and spelling in their work. The Homework Policy has been E put in place and there will soon be a homework timetable and a homework club. ‘ It’s been a busy, but exciting, term for Teaching and Learning at George Mitchell! s w w I joined George Mitchell School in Sep- Helen Williams t tember and I have truly enjoyed every minute of working here so far. The children F and staff are wonderful and have made me feel very welcome; I can’t believe it is a only a term since I started and we have all achieved such a lot. I would like to thank everyone from George Mitchell School for working together to make improvements s to the on this exciting journey we are on. I would like to thank every- one who has made me welcome and part of a wonderful and hardworking team. ‘ K Claire Kirwin Ğ It only seems like yesterday that I joined the staff at George Mitchell School ũ as the Deputy Headteacher, and at that time we were a 600 strong secondary , school. A lot has happened in the 11 years I have been here – yes, I can’t be- ƚ lieve it either. Now an all-through with nursery, primary and secondary phases, ǀ a few new faces on the staff but with the same vision – to enable young peo- > ple to do and be the best they possibly can. George Mitchell School is a ‘fam- ŵ ily’, a wonderful place to work and a wonderful place to learn. A true communi- Ž ty school with a community spirit . . . and finally – thinking of good cheer, have Ɛ a wonderful Christmas break and onwards to a successful 2015 for everyone. Ĩ Ă

The Waltham Forest event hosted at the impressive Redbridge Sports Centre, gave each of the 24 primary schools that attended 8 dif- ferent challenges. Each team completed running, throw- ing and jumping events and scored points for their school. Our boys team finished 8th and our girls 15th. The ex- perience gave our team something to really build on. Sprinting is a real strength for us at this age group. Maxwell and Gagejon showed huge potential. We will be planning some training next year leading up to the the borough sports day when they will race on the out- door track for the first time.
