Dear Mr. President:

I had signed the enclosed letter to members of the class of 1937 and was about to mail it to you when the Alumni Office called and told me of your recent contribution. Therefore, I now send my thanks and also for the school and your associates in the class - particularly for the increase.

The salutation of the letter caused me some thought since personal salutation should not be lightly used for our most distinguished member, but I decided you'd like to be addressed as a class member.

The President The Hhite House Hashington, D. C. 20006

Dear Dick:

It's incredible - next fall the class of 1937 will hold its 35th reunion.

This date is not mentioned to remind you of age - we're a long way from being old crocks. I have agreed to serve as class Gift Chairman to encourage all of us to recognize this memorable anniversary with a significant gift to the Law School.

We're all barraged with requests for contributions, but there are good reasons why this one should get special atten tion. I believe you will agree that we received a superior education at Duke Law' School, and its excellent continuing reputation greatly benefits its graduates. Since we grad uated, it has improved its physical facilities with a new building, has tripled its enrollment and expanded the area of study t o meet the increasing complexity of the profession. Its nationwide recognition is reflected in the fact that last year's freshman class was picked from 2,000 applicants.

I feel sure you share my opinion that it is very impor tant that schools like Duke continue to give a high quality education to new members of the profession. The school de serves and needs our support. A top flight school needs really substantial amounts of money. A law school like Duke must depend on alumni support to greater degree than other university units which receive greater help from business, foundations and government.

This year a gift has extra value because the Ford Foundation ,rill grant one dollar for every four donated. P~l our gifts will go to the school's educational budget. I hope that you will give this request your immediate attention and that you will help make the 35 th an impressive anniversary by giving even more generous l y than you think your circumstances permit. I enclose a pledge card and reply envelope for your convenience.

I l ook forward to seeing you next year.

The relentless battle we have waged against TB since 1902 is not yet won. Even though there has been a dramatic decline in the incidence of the disease at the national level, TB cl-ings stubbornly to its prey in large cities, including the Nation's Capital. Your help and that of tens of thousands of Washingtonians has enabled us to gain ground toward the solution of the social problems which keep perpetuating TB in our midst; to continue to aid chronic respiratory disease victims -in finding a new lease on lithe breath of life ll through patient services; to carry out year-round anti-smoking activities; to sponsor research and special training for physicians, nurses, and paramedical personnel; and to support the air conservation programs of our affiliate, the Metropolitan Washington Coalition for Clean Air. Indeed, the establishment of this fund for the benefit of heart disease research we feel is a most fitting manner of memorial. Dear Mr. President After due consideration have decided not to dwell on the fact that I taught Tricia for two years in Sunday School at Metropolitan Methodist Church, or that my son was in love with Julie for four years at Horace Mann, or that Dr. Latch and I prayed for you to become President for eight years (1960-1968) but to approach you with a bargain. Duke Un ive rsity is cel ebrati ng its 25th Loyalty Fu nd Anniversary and we hope to achieve a goal of $1 million. This is vi tal to all of us because the Ford Fou ndation has prom ised a renewal of their "o ne -for-four" challenge grant. An alumnus gift of $1 00 means $125 for Duke; $1,000 will mean $1,250, etc. An opportu nity we must not miss. All al um ni are asked to double thei r pledges of last year. The new pledges are payable by June 30, 1972. I understand you have given generous support to your former legal alma mater in the past and we hope you will be in a position to double your pledge this year. Thank you for your valuable time and consideration. My side of the bargai n is I'll campaign for you on Frark Dale's Corn mittee. Sincerely yours, s/Nancy LawsReifsnyder (Mrs. C. Dear Mr. President,

I do not believe I have written to thank you for your gift to the Duke University Loyalty Fund for this year. Being Class Agent is a thankless job, and I think I will let someone else take it on next year. However, it is people like you who make it an easier one, and I did want to let you know that I appreciated your response.

I am sure that you are interested in knowing who has contributed so far this year and the total amount of their gifts. The enclosed list of classmates have given a total of $2,262.56. Our goal is $3,000.00, and, hopefully, we will make it.

DUKE"LOYALTY FUND November 21, 1970

-/liA . ~ Dear ~t e:

You have heard recently from L. Stacy Weaver, Jr. :LLB'53 J President elect of the Law School Alumni Association. You know that our Loyalty Fund gifts will now be incorporated into the annual budget of the Law School to support directly its educational programs.

Equally important, in my way of thinking, is the fact that our financial support will help preserve the superior educational quality that has been a hallmark of the Law School for so many years. Everyone is aware of the importance of legal education these days, and of its even greater importance in the decade ahead. By the same measure, no one needs to be reminded that high quality is also a necessary ingredient.

Our Law School is doing everything possible to insure that its educational programs meet the standards of excellence that we ourselves experienced. Here is one of the major reasons why our annual support means so much to the School. The amounts we give annually through the Loyalty Fund enable us to assume a share of that which is involved in maintaining and strengthening the position of leadership that belongs to the Duke Law School.

What I am saying is that we can all take pride in the job being done by the Law School, both from a professional standpoint and from the standpoint of being more than just casually associated with it. And, speaking quite frankly, if the Law School is to continue its role of providing superior educational programs, it will need much more help from us, the men and women who have taken its degrees and benefited from its training. I might add that every leading law school in the

country has attained its position of leadership, in large measure J as a result of strong alumni support.

Our Law School goal this year is $60,000, part of the overall Loyalty Fund goal of $1,000,000. Won!t you use the enclosed pledge card and envelope today to let Duke know of your concern and your support? Pledges may be paid, as usual, any time between now and next June 30.

Dear Rose Mary:

The President very graciously sent me a check far $5.00, with a note in which he mentions that he would keep JIf3' $5 bill as a souvenir. Unfortunately, I have to do the same thing with hie oheck, so will you thank him and advise his auditor that the $5 check will never be cashed, so that they can make the proper adjustments.

For your information, and his too, if you would like to tell him, he is gaining heavlly, from the people I talk wi th. Unfortunately, his so-called leading opposition, when on TV , puts me sound asleep, and I am afraid he will do it to the nation, too.

The pictures arrived at G-P, at Los Angeles Country Club. Everyone is delighted and grateful.

I have one thought which may be of value regarding the new youth vote, which I will get to him soon.

Kindest personal regards,

Miss Rose Mary Wood Secretary to the President The White House Washington, D. C. ------
