‘City in transition’ New York vies to turn page on ‘pandemic’

NEW YORK, May 20, (AP): More than a year after corona- virus shutdowns sent “the city that never sleeps” into a fitful slumber, New York could be wide awake again this summer. Starting Wednesday, vaccinated New Yorkers could shed their masks in most situations, and restaurants, stores, gyms and many other businesses could go back to full capacity if they check vaccination cards or apps for proof that all patrons have been inoculated. Subways resumed running round-the-clock this week. Mid- night curfews for bars and restaurants will be gone by month’s end. Broadway tickets are on sale again, though the curtain won’t rise on any shows until September. Officials say now is New York’s moment to shake off the image of a city brought to its knees by the virus last spring - a recovery poignantly rendered on the latest cover of The New Yorker magazine. It shows a giant door part-open to the city skyline, letting in a ray of light. Is the Big Apple back to its old, brash self? “Maybe 75%. ... It’s definitely com- ing back to life,” said Mark Kumar, 24, a personal trainer. But Ameen Deen, 63, said: “A full sense of normalcy is not going to come any time soon. There’s far too many deaths. There’s too much suffering. De Blasio There’s too much inequality.” Last spring, the biggest city in Amer- ica was also the nation’s deadliest coronavirus hotspot, the site of over 21,000 deaths in just two months. After a year of ebbs, surges, reopenings and closings, the city hopes vaccinations are turning the tide for good. About 48% of residents have had at least one dose so far. Form supergroup Ex-girl band members unite in new BET show

NEW YORK, May 20, (AP): BET is forming the next big R&B girl group — with the help of members from platinum-selling ensembles like 702, Total, Danity Kane, 3LW, Blaque and Cherish. The reality show “BET Presents The Encore” will premiere June 9 and includes eight former members from groups who had success in the ‘90s and 2000s, as well as Grammy-nominated R&B singer Nivea. In the 10-episode series, the singers live together for 30 days to record an album at a home studio, learn choreography and practice vocals. The cast includes Pamela Long of Total, the Bad Boy Records trio who released grooves like “No One Else,” “Kissin’ You,” “Trippin’” and “Can’t You See” with Notorious B.I.G.; sisters Irish and LeMisha Grinstead from 702, another R&B trio who had hits with “Where My Girls At?” and “Get It Togeth- er”; Shamari DeVoe of Blaque, the proteges of TLC’s Left Eye who had success on the charts with “808” and “Bring It All to Me” with N’Sync; and Aubrey O’Day of Danity Kane, the group who formed in 2005 on Diddy’s “Making the Band 3” Williams and saw their fi rst two albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. “I felt that girl groups never got its just do ... and I, as a content creator, wanted to ... educate the masses on who I feel are the forgotten sisters of music,” ex- ecutive producer Carlos King said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I wanted to pay homage to that industry and really give these women an opportunity to share their stories and their struggles.” Other members include Kiely Williams, who was fi rst in the trio 3LW, known for songs like “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right)” and “Playas Gon’ Play” but later reached multi-platinum status with Disney’s The Cheetah Girls; Nivea, the only Grammy nominee of the bunch who launched the Top 40 hits “Don’t Mess In this April 6, 1974 file photo, members of Swedish group ABBA and close associates celebrate the victory of their song ‘Waterloo’ in the in With My Man” and “Okay”; and twins Felisha and Brighton, England. Valladolid need a victory to avoid relegation Spanish league ends with title fi nale, possible farewells

BARCELONA, Spain, May 20, (AP): Two of Spain’s most modest stadiums are set to offer scenes of joy and sor- row on Saturday. Atlético Madrid can ensure it clinches its fi rst Spanish league title in seven years with a win at Vallado- lid, while Lionel Messi and Ronald Koeman could participate in their last game for Barcelona when they visit the already relegated Eibar. Atlético enters the fi nal round of the competition with a two-point lead over defending champion Real Madrid. If Diego Simeone’s side fails to win at Valladolid, Madrid can retain its ti- tle by beating Villarreal. Madrid holds the tiebreaker advantage with Atlético in case they fi nish level on points. In a provincial city 190 kilometers (118 miles) north of Madrid, Vallado- lid needs a victory at its José Zorrilla Stadium to have a chance of avoiding relegation. Elche and Huesca are also fi ghting with Valladolid to not go down, with two of the three clubs destined for the drop. For Valladolid defender Kiki Oli- vas, his team’s desperation could be what it needs to pull off the upset. “We still have a chance and that is why we must fi ght until the end,” Olivas said. “We have to forget every- thing else and face the match with the belief that we can pull it off regardless of the diffi culty. Atlético Madrid has something important to play for, but this is our stadium and we have more at stake than they do.” SOCCER
