Railroad tie fire at recycling plant near Selma visible on weather radars An Aug. 1 fire a few miles east of Selma in the perfectly named town of Burnsville was visible on weather radars at its zenith. The fire at National Salvage & Service Corp. spread throughout the property and burned down the company’s office trailer before spreading to oil-treated railroad ties at the recycling plant in Dallas County. Officials reported that a lightning strike caused the huge fire, and it was under control by Aug. 3 following heavy rains. Nobody was hurt in the fire and evacuations were not needed. The yard at Burnsville typically holds thousands of chemically treated railroad ties that are ground up and used for fuel, primarily in industrial boilers, according to a National Salvage spokesperson. The fire grew from a Ad. Info: mulletwrapper.com small blaze atop a pile of ties to an orange glare that burned throughout the night and was ultimately vis- ible from space. (Photos: Valley Grande Vol. Fire Dept. Facebook page). No one was hurt and no evacuations were required, but officials said the heavy smoke from wood treated with chemicals could cause breathing problems for people with asthma or other medical conditions. 850-492-5221 Ad. Birding and bird conservation efforts are a key component of this because our area is part of the winter and spring migration routes.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (Service) Gulf Restoration Office biologists are focused on land restoration, while also looking to the sky — literally — as they track birds’ migration patterns. Dauphin Island’s West End Amid settlement negotiations and cleanup efforts from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, one spit of land remained in focus for biologists. Roughly 840 acres of coastal habitat, which until recently was pri- vately owned, is known as the West End of Dauphin Island. The U.S. Census Bureau has designated the area as 166-square-miles, which includes about 96% open water that is invaluable habitat for coastal birds.
