  • Joyce Kilmer, the Author of "Trees." Sergeant Kilmer Was Killed in Action in Europe in World War I
    In 1941, the Federal Government bought 1,000 acres to use as a staging area for troops fighting the War in Europe. It was an active Army installation through the Korean War. In 1956, it was used as America's Reception Center for Hungarians seeking freedom from Communist oppression A portion of Camp Kilmer was returned to use by the township as a park and ball- fields. Today, the Sutton/Kilmer Indust­ rial Campus is home to many prestigious corporations and is the site of Edison's large Kilmer Mail Facility. The New Jersey Job Corps Center is also located here. The area bears the name of Middlesex County's poet-laureat, Joyce Kilmer, the author of "Trees." Sergeant Kilmer was killed in action in Europe in World War I. Edison Twp. Pub. Take but this instance as an example and a text: The Helen Haire Levinson prize of $200 for the best poem of the year was awarded in November 1918 by Poetry to John Curtis Underwood of Santa Fe for "The Song of the Cheochas," a strangely prophetic war poem. The United War Work Drive was on when Mr. Under­ wood received his $200 check and he turned it over as a gift to the campaign committee. This significant and interesting incident gains in color if one emphasizes the setting and the circumstances.

    Hollowell Survived the Worst of the Great War When the United States declared war on Germany in 1917, the War Department quickly federalized National Guard divisions to quickly build up the Army. A young Army major recommended that non-divisional units from several states be combined to create another division, a division that would “stretch over the whole country like a rainbow.” Secretary of War Newton Baker approved the proposal and the 42 Infantry Division was created. The division included National Guard units from 26 states and was nicknamed the “Rainbow” Division. The major was promoted to colonel and assigned as the division’s chief of staff. His name was Douglas MacArthur. One of the units absorbed into the Rainbow Division was the 117th Engineer Regiment. One of the units absorbed into the 117th was South Carolina’s 1st Separate Engineer Battalion. The battalion consisted of three companies: A from Marion; B from Columbia; and C from Spartanburg. John W. Hollowell of Columbia joined B Company shortly after the United States declared war that spring and took his initial training at the fairgrounds in his hometown. Hollowell had enrolled at Clemson College in 1913 to study electrical engineering. He was listed on the roll of sophomores for the 1914-15 academic year. That was likely the last year he attended Clemson as he was not listed in the next years’ junior or senior classes. Hollowell and his company journeyed in mid-August 1917 to Camp Sevier in Greenville to join the rest of the battalion for training. In late August, the battalion traveled to Camp Mills on Long Island for six weeks of pre-deployment training.

Historical background: Camp Mills was a World War I military installation located in Mineola, New York. Named after Major General Albert L. Mills, it is recognized as the birthplace of the elite 42nd Infantry of the National Guard, better known as the “Rainbow Division.” Initially established as a temporary camp in September 1917, it soon became the largest training center for American expedition forces and an active port of embarkation for troops in transit to France. Camp Mills was utilized as such until Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, when it was converted to a port of debarkation where garrison troops were stationed upon returning from Europe. Post-war operations continued until March 31, 1920, and in 1938 it was incorporated into Mitchel Air Force Base, which was later decommissioned in 1961. Scope and content: The collection is comprised of sixty-one 2 5/8” x 4 3/8” and six 3 1/8” x 5 1/2” black- and-white photographs taken by an unknown WWI soldier in the Quartermaster Corps. The photos were taken between January and April of 1919, when Camp Mills was used as a post-war port of debarkation. They depict daily life at the camp, and contain annotations on the versos.

Gutiérrez 2008 ABSTRACT When the United States declared war in the spring of 1917, American men went to war with idyllic visions of warfare. This study explores the state of mind of the AEF soldier during the Great War, an issue that has challenged scholars in the field since the troops returned home. With the use of Military Service Records (MSRs or questionnaires) issued in 1919 from four states as its core source, this dissertation argues that the American cultural glorification of warfare created an impetuous doughboy, who believed war was a game and the path to manhood. Employing these neglected firsthand descriptions of the war in the uncensored words of veterans provides understanding of American military identity; it removes the uniform and studies the individual – whether it is an aristocratic New Englander who hungered to prove his masculinity or an African American blacksmith fighting for his equality.
