st 41 Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY® AWARDS
st The 41 Annual Northern California Area Emmy® Awards were presented Saturday evening, June 9 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. The Emmy® Award honors excellence in all fields of television and on-line production.
Overall Station Excellence and News Excellence Emmy® Awards went to KGO ABC 7, William Burton, President and General Manager and former Vice President News, Kevin Keeshan. The coveted Evening Newscast Large Market was awarded to “The Ten O’Clock News,” KTVU Channel 2; Medium Markets: “KITV4 News at 10,” KITV 4, Honolulu. The recipient of the Smaller Markets Newscast was “Central Coast News: The Day the Tsunami Hit the Central Coast,” KION/KCBA.
KUVS Univision 19, Sacramento took top honors being awarded in 20 categories, with KGO ABC 7, KNTV NBC Bay Area and KPIX CBS 5 each receiving six awards. Reporter Santiago Lucero, and photographer/editor, Christian Anguiano, both from KUVS Univision 19, each received six Emmy® statuettes.
The prestigious Governors’ Award was presented to long-time Bay Area broadcaster Fred LaCosse, LaCosse Productions. Fred worked at KNTV, KRON and KGO before starting his own production company. His wife, Terry Lowry, received the Governors’ Service Medallion for her talent and dedicated commitment to the NATAS Board of Governors.
The three and one half hour awards dinner and ceremony was hosted by John Kessler. Mike Sugerman and Desiree Goyette wrote the opening production number, “The Emmy® Blues,” performed by Kessler, Kim Nalley and the Foothill College Repertory Dance Company. The number was directed and choreographed by Bubba Gong. A special tribute honored Belva Davis, KQED, who will retire in November after 48 years on Bay Area television.
The Emmy® statuette is awarded for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. San Francisco/Northern California is one of the twenty chapters awarding regional Emmy® Awards. The chapter is composed of television/cable stations, on-line and production companies from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Of the 735 eligible entries received in 59 categories for work produced only in 2011, 250 were nominated and 92 received the Emmy® statuette. English and Spanish language entries were judged, scored and awarded separately. Electronic ballots were submitted by a minimum of five peer judges from other NATAS chapters and were sent directly to the accounting firm of Spalding & Company in San Francisco.
