VARSITY HEAD COACH COLONELS RALLY ‘ROUND Coach Scott Ruthsatz With a Spirit that 1941-2019 will Not Die! Jack Kaelin lived his life to serve others and his deep devotion to God, his school, his students and his family knew no bounds. Quick-wied with a great sense of humor, he loved to tease his favorite people, and in turn, he (almost always!) enjoyed the pranks others played on him. But he was also a man of strong conviction and determination who was grounded by his Catholic faith. As an educator, coach, mentor, and friend, he has positively influenced the northern Kentucky community in countless ways. Without a doubt, everyone he touched in life is a beer person for having known Coach Kaelin. He will be deeply missed and long remembered.

On December 4, 1941, Priscilla (Brokamp) In loving memory of Jack Kaelin, a true and Clarence Kaelin were blessed with Colonel (1941 - 2019) their third child, John Nicholas. On this day, when older sister Shirley Jane, heard the alarm clock ringing in her parent's bedroom, she le her cozy bed only to find her parents missing! Confused, she woke her brother, Jim, and together they searched the home, but to no avail. A few moments later, when Grandma Kaelin arrived, she explained that their mother Coachand father had goneYears to the river to getRecord a new baby! Jack adored his siblings and was their constant Art Bohmancompanion. As is oen1948-54 the case with 54-76 lile brothers,.415 he could also be a pest. CoachIn the Scott early 1970's, Ruthsatz aer Jack's father passed away, he and his mother moved to Crestview Hills. Vehemently dedicated to his mother's well-being, here they remained until Priscilla's death in 1991. Calling upon his deep faith to sustain him at this challenging time, Jack then moved into a condominium nearby. His commitment to the school he loved with all his heart helped him carry on.

Jack taught German at Covington Catholic High School. Family and friends knew that they could count on hearing Jack's unique rendition of Germanic Happy Birthday ("Alles gut zum geburtstag") on their special day. If accompanied by the German students, all the beŠer to drown out Jack's (admiŠedly) terrible singing voice! Jack taught other subjects such as economics, business, and typing. However, his true passion blossomed when he was offered a position as coach for the track and cross country teams. In the years that followed, Jack started a bowling team at the school and initiated a freshman basketball tournament that now bears his name. Additionally, he proudly served as Covington Catholic's athletic director for several years and provided his services as scorekeeper for their basketball team. Over his extraordinary career, Jack was inducted into the CovCath Sports Hall of Fame, Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Never one to be idle for long, Jack took pleasure in his part-time pastimes. From working at the race track to playing Santa Claus at local department stores, he spread love and joy wherever he went. Jack was also well known for his 'sweet tooth'. Although he considered it a well-kept secret, everyone knew that his secret stash of goodies (ranging from cheese dip and Frito’s to LiŠle Debbie snack cakes and Pop Tarts) could be found inside his kitchen's (never used) dishwasher!

An exceptional mentor, Jack's students found comfort in his steady counsel. Conversely, he held his students in high regard and via example, his tutelage instilled the value of mutual respect among the peers. Jack also loved teasing his students and if their aention waned, they might be the recipient of a playful bop on the head or even a good drenching from the water jug that Mr. Kaelin kept within easy reach! Every Christmas season, the plastic Baby Jesus from the manger scene in Mr. Kaelin's front yard would mysteriously disappear! Documented on film by the student pranksters, it would soon reappear at local sites such as Devou Park, Fountain Square, and even the county jail! Baby Jesus always came home, though; Mr. Kaelin was constantly amused to finally recover the figure in a variety of locations such as under his desk or in his parking spot! A special harmony also existed between Jack and his many nieces and nephews. They played a special role in his life and he was especially delighted when they expressed an interest in sports. He was a wonderful role model for them all and a faithful guide to them with life's challenges. At the end of the school year in 2013, Jack retired. He was deeply touched by the support he received by his Covington Catholic family. On his last day there, Jack was delighted to see students and faculty alike participate in a comical look-alike contest on 'Jack Kaelin Day'. On March 30, 2019, Jack passed away. He and Father John Putka, lifelong friends, had a running joke regarding how they might eulogize one another. It would not surprise anyone who knew Jack to envision him smiling about Father Putka's final words of endearment, "Here lies the shell of a man. The nut has gone away". BELOVED COACH/TEACHER DAN TIEMAN

In 1964, Dan Tieman began his service as teacher, coach, mentor, friend to thousands of students at Covington Catholic High School. Coach T retired in 2010 after 46 years of service to the school. He wore many hats while at CCH including Dean of Students, Alumni Director, and Business Development Chairman. He taught multiple subjects including Career Explorations, Modern European History, Economics, English, Business Law, and Math. Coach Tieman is best known for his success as Covington Catholic ‘s former head basketball coach. However, there is much more to Coach T than basketball. His faith, family, and teaching gave direction to his life. He led the rosary service at school every Tuesday and Thursday morning in the Chapel and was very involved with the school retreats. Colleague and friend, Bill Snyder, said “Dan Dan Tieman shows his passion instinctively always did the right thing which is why he was such a for his faith and Covington role model to so many young men and their families.” Catholic at the dedication of the Grotto at Covington Catholic High School in 2009. With Rev. Mark Dan started on the Covington Catholic varsity basketball squad Keene, Covington Catholic’s alongside his brother Roger during the 1955-56 season. By the time Pastoral Administrator. he graduated in 1958, he was a member of the Courier Journal All State Team, the 1000 -Point club, All District and All Region teams, and had helped carry the Colonels to the Regional Finals in 1958. He also was a 3 -year letterman in baseball.

Tieman continued his playing days at Villa Madonna College (now Thomas More University) where he would play both baseball and basketball. While attending Villa Madonna, he earned many accolades including MVP in 1960 and 1961, All Conference Kentucky Intercollegiate Conference in 1960, 1961, 1962, and the Catholic Digest All American Team in 1960. As a sophomore in 1960, Dan helped his team to the NAIA Championship and was the team leading scorer. He would leave Villa Madonna as a 1000- point club member and the second all- time scorer as well as career assist leader. The Kansas City Steers of the ABL drafted Tieman in 1962 but he decided to stay home and play for the Cincinnati Royals.

After 15 years coaching at Thomas More College, Coach T started coaching baseball and basketball at CCH in 1978. In 1985, Dan was named the Head Varsity Basketball coach at Covington Catholic. He spent 15 seasons in that position. In those 15 years, Coach T had the most wins in CCH history. In 1992, he was named Northern Kentucky Coach of the Year after winning the 9th Region Title. His teams also brought home Regional Runner- up trophies in 1994,95, and 99. In December 2009, Tieman celebrated his 300th career victory, all at Covington Catholic. He retired with 314 wins and a career .750 winning percentage.

Coach T is a member of several Hall of Fames, including Covington Catholic High School, Thomas More College, Northern Kentucky Athletic Director’s Association, and the Greater Cincinnati Basketball.

Dan spent nearly 50 years in the game of basketball and over 45 years in teaching, yet all of the wins do not adequately represent the impact he had on the lives of the players he coached and the students he taught. Covington Catholic Principal, Bob Rowe, noted, “ Coach Tieman was an example to every young man that walked the halls of Covington Catholic, and to every person that ever walked across his path. His family, friends, students, players, and colleagues are better people because of him.”
