For more than 30 years, Ron Westacott was a major contributor to the cultural, sporting, literary and social life of the community in which he and his wife Miriam lived. Seend and its various neighbourhoods are immensely richer for his great humanity, boundless energy, tireless support and true friendship. We are honoured to dedicate this year’s Fete to Ron’s memory.

CAR PARKING DISABLED PARKING: A number of the parking spaces on the Lye Field have been reserved for disabled drivers.

ADDITIONAL PARKING : this is available at the top end of Spout Lane in the field opposite Egypt Farm. If approaching Seend from the Devizes direction, go straight on at the Seend Fork traffic lights, through Sells Green, and turn left just before the Three Magpies. Continue up Spout lane - caution at the canal bridge - until you see the Fete Parking sign. From here it is a short walk through The Lye to the Fete area. It would be appreciated if local residents driving to the Fete would park on the Spout Lane car park (accessible from the High St.), leaving the Lye Field for visitors unfamiliar with the village.

SEEND FETE 2008

Welcome to Seend Summer Fete! It is difficult to believe that a year has gone by since I last said these words – or something similar. Last year’s event was truly a Fete to remember. The weather was fine and sunny, the entertainment was truly first class, and the stalls and entertainments seemed to be better than they had ever been before. “What a difference,” we all said, with much relief “from the Fete of 2005, when it rained from start to finish!” Well it was very different, but in almost every way it was precisely the same. The same effort went into its planning and organisa- tion. The same level of commitment was shown by the dozens of volunteers who helped to build and run it on the day, and the same enjoyment was shared by the hundreds of visitors who came and spent their time and money in support of this rather special event. The only difference was the weather, but here in Britain we don’t let the weather prevent us doing what we want to do – if we did we wouldn’t get very much done! And when ‘doing the things we want to’ means getting collectively involved in something which is close to our hearts, well, not only do we ignore the weather, we posi- tively reject it! Events like our Fete depend not only on the hard work and dedi- cation of local residents, but increasingly on the generosity of the wider community who turn up on the day determined to enjoy what is on offer. The result of this happy symbiosis can be - and usually is - an afternoon of rare delight from which each and every one of us can take great satisfaction. Whether we have rain or sun at this year’s Fete is in the lap of the gods, but whatever the weather, two things are certain: there will be a Fete on the Lye Field, and there will be lots of people having a really good time. I do hope you are one of them. For your help and support over the years, you certainly deserve to be. On behalf of the village of Seend, may I say thank you all so very much. Many thanks also to all our helpers who set up the fete and help on the day - we couldn’t manage with- out you. Drawing by: Ellie Strahan Seend fete princess 2008

The beautiful smiles of Seend Fete Princess Korah Casey and her Royal Attendants Claudie and Ellie Hartley welcome you to our Fete. Korah, who admits to being ’10 and a bit’, also admits to loving chocolate, strawberry milk-shakes – and trampolining! But not, hopefully in that order or all at the same time.... Her favourite celebs are the cast of High School Musical, and her favourite hobby is – not surprisingly – collecting High School Musical stickers, from eBay. Clearly a girl who knows what she likes – and where to get it! Just the kind of girl we need at Seend Fete.

Royal Attendants this year are 6 year-old twins Claudie and Ellie. Apart from a shared hobby - looking after their chickens (with a little help from Daddy) – they are really quite individualistic. Claudie loves grapes, straw- berry milk-shakes, maths and Taylor & Kelsey from High School Musical, while some of Ellie’s favourites include pizza, chocolate milk-shakes, cook- ing and Sharpay from … yes, you’ve guessed it, High School Musical! But these girls are no slouches: they both love jogging, to which Claudie adds running and hopping – and we’re sure that Ellie does too…

With girls such as Korah, Claudie and Ellie, the future for our community may not be orange, but it is certainly very bright! When it comes to your child’s education, we’re not run of the mill – our aim is that children should acquire lively enquiring minds, the effective use of lan- guage and numbers, personal moral values and the understanding and respect for the world and those around them. Millipedes nurs- ery for 3-4 year olds opens September 2008.
