The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered under authority granted by the General Assembly of South Carolina and the Aiken County Commission for Higher Education in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. A small cadre of faculty and staff were assigned the mission of establishing a college community with acceptable operations and standards. The Aiken Center opened its doors to 139 students in September 1961. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in the City of Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center) and one secretary. Initially, the school offered only freshman and sophomore courses but throughout the sixties the size and reputation of the Center grew as word of its excellence spread among its constituents. She will come off the bench to steal some bases for the Pacers... She will also see action in the outfield this season

18 SOFTBALLALUMNIPROFILESOFTBALLALUMNIPROFILE alumnialumnialumni Susan Regina Williamson Susan Williamson played softball for the Lady Pacers as an outfielder from 1995 to 1999, under the directionprofileprofileprofile of Head Coach Jerry Snyder. She gradu- ated in December 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science. Upon graduation, she accepted a management position with Jim Hannah Sportswear located in downtown Aiken.

Susan enjoyed her collegiate career at USC Aiken and proved to be an outstanding softball player. When asked about her most memorable moment as an athlete, she recalled many accomplishments that she and the team made during her sophomore year. “We beat Columbus that year, and they were a nationally ranked team at the time. I was also the national leader of the NCAA Division II in triples and hit back-to-back homeruns in the Peach Belt Tournament that same year.” When asked how her collegiate athletic experience helped her prepare for life after college, she said that it “made me responsible and taught me how to manage my time.” While Susan thoroughly enjoys her position at Jim Hannah Sportswear, her future career plans involve earning a teaching certificate where she can take the softball skills that she gained at USCA and apply them at the high school level.

If given the opportunity to offer advice to the current Lady Pacers, she would encourage them to “Enjoy the time you have in college and playing softball – it’s one of the best times of your life.” Susan, who originally hails from Aiken, is still involved in playing slow-pitch tournament softball and coaches the 14 and Under Carolina Intruder Fast-Pitch Travel Team.
