1. INTRODUCTION

SISBI/UFU library Collection is formed by informational material acquired through purchase, donation and/or exchange. In order to select, to acquire, to process and to download these materials it is necessary to establish criteria through the Collection development Policy, to guarantee the quality and quantity of our Collection.

2. GENERAL GOAL

SISBI aims to meet the information needs of teachers, students and staff, collaborating for trinomium teaching, for research and Institution extension.

3. SPECIFIC GOALS

The Policy of Collection formation and development aims to define the criteria for Collection development and updating, such as:

a) to establish the criteria for works selection by observing the quantity and quality, according to courses' characteristics and needs; b) permanently update the Collection, allowing its growth and balance; c) to set priorities and deadlines for informational material acquisition; d) to direct, to streamline and to manage financial resources;

e) to establish, to formalize and to manage the exchange of periodicals published by UFU; f) to establish guidelines for Collection evaluation;

g) to draw up guidelines for disposing material. 4

4 REPONSABILITY

SISBI Directors Board and DAPT - SSA are responsible for the creation and implementation of SISBI Collection development Policy.

5 COLLECTION FORMATION

The Collection must be constituted according to the available budgetary resources, contemplating the different types of materials in varied supports, aiming at the quantitative and qualitative growth. This material should serve as an informational support to teaching, research and Institution extension activities. Each library Collection must be constituted according to the knowledge areas of the campus where the library is located, unless some faculty justifies its use during the course as a basic bibliography.

6 GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA

As for the Collection formation, the informational material must be selected according to the following criteria: a) adequacy of the academic curriculum to the institution research lines;

b) content updating and quality;

c) amount (excess/shortage) of material on a same subject within the collection; d) subject coverage/treatment;

e) justifiable cost/benefit ratio;

f) accessible language;

g) potential users;

h) material physical conditions;

i) original publications;

j) format compatible with existing equipment;

k) if it is regarding periodicals:

that are not available by free access online; 5

that are indexed in some database;

that possess good conceptualization in Qualis (Capes);

that the content covered is not multidisciplinary.

In order to ensure a rational and balanced Collection growth, it is necessary to adopt quantitative and qualitative development criteria.

6.1 Qualitative selection

Selection and Acquisition Sector (SESEL) is responsible for the periodic disclosure of the periods of acquisition of informational material and the collection to the units for this assignment to be fulfilled. To ensure the quality of the selection process, faculty must:

a) keep basic and complementary bibliographies indicated in pedagogical projects updated; b) request the acquisition of bibliographies via SISBI electronic form;

c) observe and request the updating of existing works in the collection;

6.2 Quantitative selection by Collection type

Defining the number of copies of each title to be acquired depends on the characteristics of each bibliographic material.

6.2.1 Books - General Collection

According to faculty indication, book titles are acquired according to the criteria established by MEC1 as to the type of bibliography, whether basic or complementary and with the number of vacancies/year by discipline: a) basic bibliography: minimum of 3 titles, 1 copy for every 5 vacancies / year per course; b) complementary: minimum of 5 titles, 2 copies of

each.

Foreign works are acquired by proportion of one (1) copy of each title, when there is no translation available in Portuguese or Spanish. Considering the great demand and/or faculty justification, the number of copies can be increased. The request for a larger quantity must be justified at the time of request. It is up to the Selection and Acquisition Sector:

a) to provide the quantitative growth of works of great demand, based on the statistical analysis of loan and reserve data; b) to provide updates (of editions) of codes, legislations, encyclopedias dictionaries; c) to provide for the replacement of missing works, according to "Informational material replacement Procedure".
