While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes. -

THE PITTSBURGH BUREAU OF POLICE: SOME HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS Christine Altenburger ave the people of Pittsburgh deserved a better police force than * they have had over the years, or have they had a better police A force than they deserve ? This is a question that readers may wish toponder as they examine some points of historical interest inthe development of the police force of the city of Pittsburgh. The history of a police function in the Pittsburgh area dates back to the days of Pitt Township. 1 Pitt Township had a constable who was called upon to make a report of his district at each term of court at Hannastown. He was the one official in the area with the power to arrest. When Pittsburgh was incorporated as a borough in 1794, the position of constable was carried forward withthe establishment of the office of High Constable. No assistant constables were provided for at the incorporation which must be taken as an indication of a lack of police business at this time. The constable's duties were largely con- fined to civil matters. It is difficult to imagine today that Pittsburgh, at this time (1794), was but a small plot of territory. The limits of the borough were Grant Street on the east and Eleventh Street on the north. Ithad a population of about a thousand. The first suggestion of anything like a police force is contained in a series of recommendations by the borough's retiring burgesses to their successors. 2 The time is 1802. We just completed another excellent academic year, punctuated by an exciting and memorable commencement ceremony. The ceremony featured former Vice President Al Gore, who charged the graduates to lead this country to a more sustainable future and recognized G our department and university as leaders in this mission, and Professor Randy Pausch, who encouraged the graduates to be passionate about how they spend each day. At our CEE graduation ceremony, I was also pleasantly surprised, and touched, to receive a senior class gift from every one of our graduating seniors for use in supporting the Class of 2009. These seniors, a talented group who won many external awards, also clearly demonstrated the community spirit we so often talk about here in CEE. We send our best wishes to all of these graduates as they commence the next phase of their lives. The highlighted theme of this newsletter is environmental sustainability, which we have actively researched and taught courses on since the early 1990’s. One of the most significant contributions to this area has been the Economic Input Output Life-Cycle Assessment (EIO- LCA) tool that has permitted efficient and effective LCA analyses in a large number of domains. This powerful tool, publicly available at www.eiolca.net since 1997, has been very widely used because of its accessibility and flexibility. -
