Crosspoint Church has set out to produce an issue of Weekly Worship Tools for the encouragement and resourcing of our church body each week. Each Saturday, this guide is published with the hope that it will aid you in being transformed by the gospel and living daily on mission.

This document is structured in two categories: weekend resources and weekday resources. Sundays we gather for Corporate Worship and sit under the teaching of the Word of God as we fellowship together. The first guide listed in the Table of Contents below, "Prepare for Worship," is produced to stir our meditation on the passage to be preached, causing us to prepare our hearts for the message on Sunday. Additionally, we have provided you with a basic outline of the "Sermon Notes" to guide your attention and participation with the Pastor as he works through the message. Furthermore, a set of lyric sheets have been added following the "Prepare for Worship" for your convenience as you join in worship through song on Sunday morning.

A Sermon Discussion Guide and a Daily Worship Guide are provided for individual or household worship through the week. The focus of Monday and Tuesday is an opportunity to look back at the Scripture preached on Sunday. Each Wednesday we will read an Old Testament passage that connects to what is being communicated through our sermon Scripture. Thursday's focus is observing a Psalm that relates to this passage and our immediate context. Fridays begin looking forward to the coming Sunday as we observe the Scripture passage for the coming Corporate Worship gathering.

It is recommended that you use this set of tools alongside your with a way to record any notes, insights, or questions (i.e. in a journal, word doc, etc.) you may have while you study.

Last Sunday, Pastor Jason Smith preached from 2 Corinthians 4:7-18 and encouraged us not to lose heart in our sufferings because suffering well glorifies God, furthers God’s Kingdom, and is for our ultimate good.

Read: :1-10

This Sunday, we celebrate Easter! He is risen!

Pastor Ken will preach from 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 and will show us how the hope of eternity with Christ empowers us with courage for today. As you prepare your heart for this special Sunday, let this devotional from Paul Tripp lead you to “be filled with the hope and joy of knowing that did, at a certain point in time in history, walk out of that tomb victorious over death.”

Reflect: “The Hope of a Double Resurrection” We are living through a moment that will be written about in history books. You will tell your grandkids about the time the world shut down. Documentaries will retell the story for generations to come.

It’s tempting to dwell on the weight of the global pandemic, but I would encourage you to step back. There is a far greater historical moment that you should be thinking about this week. It’s the most significant event in the history of the universe.

It’s the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Everything in the Bible, everything that your faith relies on, and all of your reasons for hope rest on this day. If there is not a specific point in time where Jesus walked out of the tomb, then your religion is a waste of time. The book that we call the Word of God wouldn’t be worth the paper that it is written on.

This is the argument the Apostle Paul makes in 1 Corinthians 15: “And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain […] And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.” (vv. 14, 17-19, ESV)

Because of this factual and historical miracle, as believers in Jesus Christ, we get to experience a double resurrection.

4 | S U F F I C I E N T I N C H R I S T PREPARE FOR WORSHIP

First, we are resurrected out of our spiritual deadness (Ephesians 2:1), and we become spiritually alive in this life. The Bible describes your life today with a beautiful word – abundant! (John 10:10) Your heart is soft, your mind is alive, and your soul desires obedience to Christ.

You have been raised to life so you can experience the beauty and glory of the gospel right here, right now.

There’s a second resurrection. It’s that final moment when we will be resurrected out of this horrible, broken, and groaning world to live forever in a world of righteousness and peace and harmony. There will be no virus, no suffering, no death, and no sin. We will live with our Savior forever and ever.

If Jesus did not rise, there is no double resurrection for us.

Turn back to 1 Corinthians 15. I love how the passage continues: “Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.” (vv. 24-26)

What does this mean? Jesus is now reigning between the “already” of the first resurrection and the “not yet” of the second resurrection.

In confusing and unpredictable moments like we’re now living through, you don’t have to wonder what your Lord is doing. He is reigning as King, putting all of his enemies under his feet.

That final enemy will be death, and when death is under his feet, he will say to the Father, “All things are now ready.”

This week, may your heart be filled with the hope and joy of knowing that Jesus did, at a certain point in time in history, walk out of that tomb victorious over death.

Because he did, you have life now and life forever. That victory over death guarantees your victory today over sin and secures the ultimate triumph in the end. Christ today reigns on your behalf, defeating enemies you could not overcome.

Big Idea: Eternal life with Christ gives courage for today.

What is courage? What enables us to have courage? (1) God’s presence - Christian courage comes out of communion with Christ. (2) God’s promises - Christian courage comes from believing in the resurrection of Christ.

How does eternity with Christ give courage for today? I. It frees us from the fear of death (5:1-8)

H e b r e w s 2 : 1 4 - 1 5

[14] Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise

partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has

the power of death, that is, the devil, [15] and deliver all those who through fear of

death were subject to lifelong slavery.

A. God has promised us a glorified body (vv. 1-5).

1. We know it (v. 1) [1] For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

1 C o r i n t h i a n s 1 5 : 5 1 - 5 2 [51] Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, [52] in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

2. We groan for it (vv. 2-4) [2] For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, [3] if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. [4] For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 3. We are guaranteed it (v. 5) [5] He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

B. God will bring us into His glorious presence when we die (vv. 6-8).

Two modes of existence: 1. To be home in the body is to be away from the Lord (v. 6) [6] So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 2. To be away from the body is to be at home with the Lord (v. 8) [8] Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 2 C o r i n t h i a n s 4 : 1 4 [14] knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.

Two ways to live: [7] for we walk by faith, not by sight. 1. You walk faith 2. Walk by sight 2 C o r i n t h i a n s 4 : 1 4 [18] as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

II. It gives us the goal of life (5:9-10).

A. Our goal is to please the Lord (v. 9). [9] So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

B. Our motivation is the fear of the Lord (v. 10). [10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. 2 C o r i n t h i a n s 5 : 1 1 [11] Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.

1. We will appear before the judgment seat of Christ (v. 10). - The place (v. 10a) “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,” - Christ is our savior and judge!

- The time – After we die (Heb. 9:27) - The purpose (v. 10b) “so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.”

2. Is verse 10 talking about receiving rewards or about receiving eternal life? (1) Our deeds will reveal the measure of our reward in heaven (Rom. 14:10- 12; 1 Cor. 3:12-15; 1 Cor. 4:5; Rev. 2:23). 1 C o r i n t h i a n s 3 : 1 2 - 1 5 [12] Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones,

wood, hay, straw— [13] each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will

disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work

each one has done. [14] If the work that anyone has built on the foundation

survives, he will receive a reward. [15] If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer

loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

1 C o r i n t h i a n s 4 : 4 - 5 [4] Fo r I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is th e Lord who judges me. [5] Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in da rkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

(2) Our deeds will reveal who enters heaven (Matt. 16:27; Jn. 5:28; Rom. 2:6- 8; Rev. 20:11-15). J o h n 5 : 2 8 - 2 9 [28] Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice [29] and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

WHAT IS YOUR AIM? We can be courageous like Paul when we face uncertainty or even death because Jesus has defeated death by rising from the dead. When faced with life or death, we are to make it our aim to please God regardless of the outcome.

READ: 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 What is the aim of people living for “this world?” How has the gospel made us different in our aim in life? Paul writes in verse 9 that his aim is to please God. How may we “please” God with our lives? Look honestly at your life - what is your aim in life? In what ways is it similar or different to Paul’s? What are some ways you can adjust your aim to be like Paul’s?

PRAY Praise God for his demonstration of victory over sin, Satan, and death through Jesus’ triumph at the cross and by his resurrection at Easter. Ask for grace to have an undivided aim to please God with your life.
