PEACE SIGNS Epiphany students plant pinwheels with messages

From staff reports

On Saturday, Epiphany Catholic School took part in an international art and literacy project “Pinwheels for Peace,” by “planting” pinwheels with messages of peace. Their messages of peace were placed around the school’s flagpole to show their support and prayers for peace through- out the U.S. and the world. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two art teacher, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In the first year, groups in more than 1,300 loca- tions across the globe were spinning 500,000 pinwheels. Last year, the event drew 4.5 million pinwheels in more than 3,500 locations. The project is nonpolitical.

Family time Columbia City Elementary hosted its first Family Reading event of the year. Families are invited to come and read together. Students are encouraged to take Accelerated Reader tests on the books they read. This is a wonderful way for them to work on their Accelerated Reading goals their teachers have set for each grading period. Kelly Willis’ second-grade class had the highest participation, and they received ice cream sandwiches for this distinction. Pictured above, front: Mason Sparks, Zayne Hunter and Shiloh Agner. contributed a lot to their success this year. “I really like the guys that are out here,” Minson said. “Our group of guys are really a solid group and I think that it helps my game knowing I’ve got guys to back me up even if I do have a bad round.” Minson hasn’t had many bad rounds this year. Although his average is just a stroke better this season at a 37, his bad shots are way down. After settling for 14 shots that were a double bogey or worse as a junior, that number is down to just three so far in 2019. Barber has preached cutting down on com- pounded mistakes this season. Golfers are going to have bad shots — that’s just part of the game — but the key is making sure one bad shot doesn’t lead to another. And anoth- er. And another, to the point where you’ve put yourself in too deep of hole that not only hurts your score, but the team’s as well. “Watching them from the beginning of the year to now, their course management is what I’ve hounded on them for,” Barber said. “You can’t really get better in two months of golf, but you can get smarter so that’s what I really wanted them to focus on. That’s what they’ve done really well.” The Tigers made it to regionals as a team last season but failed to win a district title. That’s goal number one for Columbia, which hasn’t taken home the trophy since 2014. A district championship has proven to be a elusive goal for Columbia’s three seniors Minson, Cannon and Cribbs. They placed third last season in District 2-3A but are now in a brand new district that includes teams as far as Panama City. It won’t be easy but Barber says his team’s averages point towards accomplishing the feat. Minson says they’re primed for it too because they’ve been craving it for so long. “I think it would be really cool because I want our senior class to be the one to do it after such a long time,” Minson said. We have a lot of help from underclassmen but I really think it would be cool for our group — our senior group — to be that group that did it because we’ve all been playing really well this year. I think that that would be some- thing special for us.” The dream doesn’t just stop at districts either. The Tigers believe they could take the entire team to state, which hasn’t been in done in decades at the school.
