Before entering the ninth grade, students are assigned to one of seven Upper School Deans. Deans follow the student through four years of high school, advising and counseling them in academic and social matters, including counseling toward college. INTERIM TERM For three weeks in January, Interim Term provides Upper School students a selection of elective courses, foreign study opportunities, community service, cultural programs, and, for seniors, professional career internships.

INDEPENDENT STUDY Students who have exhausted the options for study within the regular curriculum, or have a special interest may complete an Independent Study. All Independent Studies are approved by a committee made up of the Upper School Head, Upper School Dean, the department chair and sponsoring teacher. Students receive credit and a grade for Independent Study on a semester basis. The Independent Study does not count toward the five-course minimum required of students.

HONORS, ADVANCED PLACEMENT & COLLEGE LEVEL CLASSES Entrance into Honors, AP and College Level (CL) courses requires departmental approval. All students enrolled in an AP course are required to take the AP exam. Students are not limited in the number of AP courses taken. CURRICULUM & GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Kinkaid’s curriculum is college-preparatory, and students are required at minimum to take five graded classes, four of which are academic, per semester. A weighted GPA will be calculated. In calculating the weighted GPA for a course, the following formulas will be used: in honors courses 0.6 will be added to the scale grade before averaging; in AP and CL courses 1.2, will be added to the scale grade before averaging.
