You may continue using WAH licensed software while you are employed by Skidmore College and as long as the corresponding software you use at work has active coverage by the software agreement between the college and Microsoft.

Choose a Version of Office

The number one concern is that you pick an appropriate version of Office.

Office 2013 is for Windows PCs.

Office 2010 is for Windows PCs.

Office 2011 is for Apple Macintosh.

Note: If you order the wrong version, it cannot be returned.

Choose a Delivery Method

The Microsoft Office software is available for download or on a disc, aka media.

Check the description carefully.

Here are the choices for Office 2013 for a PC. Note the one on the left is a download and the one on the right comes on a disc. The other versions have the same options.

Please select carefully. Does your computer have a disc drive? Many new do not.

Is it compatible?

Be very careful on this page. If you order the wrong product, there is no refund.

After you click the version you would like to purchase:

1. Click the Specifications tab. Skip this if you have a very new computer.

2. Carefully verify that your computer can handle your choice.

Correct version: Office 2010 and 2013 are for Windows PCs. Office 2011 is for Apple Macintosh. If you purchase the wrong version, you are fully responsible for the error. It is not possible to obtain credit.

Space: All versions of Office are very large. If you have a small netbook or an older computer with a full hard drive, you may not have room for the download and subsequent uncompressed installation. Office 2010 for Windows is 650 MB, for example.

Download time: We timed two downloads on home wireless networks that connect via Road Runner. Office 2010 needed 5 hours to download to a brand new computer on an older wireless network. It needed 1 hour and 6 minutes to download to a different brand new computer on a newer, high-speed wireless N network. Both downloads would have been faster if the user had plugged into the cable rather than using wireless. Regardless, it’s a huge, slow download and you need to allow time.

Email availability: As part of this purchasing and downloading process, you may be sent links, instructions, and a product key number by email. You must be able to check your email regularly.

Moving the downloaded file: If you do not download to the target computer, how will you move the file from one computer to another? Do you have a USB thumb drive with enough room or do you know how to burn a disc? It is recommended that you burn it to a DVD if you want it on a disc. Do you have a DVD burner? The Office 2010 installer for Windows is a 650 MB file.

In addition, keep an eye on your email program’s junk e-mail folder in case relevant messages are mistakenly moved there.

Turn on cookies in Safari: The ordering web pages may put cookies on your computer. By default, cookies are off in the Safari browser on an Apple Macintosh. You must have cookies on if you use the Safari Internet browser.
