It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of the Members of City Council and the citizens of Orillia, to welcome you to the 2010 Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival in the City of Orillia that is taking place from Monday, April 12 to Thursday, May 6, 2010.

This premiere music festival is a valuable cultural resource for the citizens of Orillia which showcases the splendid acoustics of our historic Opera House. The friendly competition and the excellent entertainment provided by musicians of all ages and abilities promises to be a wonderful artistic affair for the performers and spectators alike.

We also thank the Orillia Kiwanis Club and the many volunteers that have put in count‐ less hours; you are all to be commended for your dedication and devotion to this annual festival that is enjoyed by so many.

We hope all participants and visitors can find the time to enjoy our warm hospitality and acquaint themselves with our proud historical heritage, our vibrant and picturesque downtown and take advantage of our four‐season recreational paradise “Where it all comes together…Naturally”. Yours sincerely, Ron Stevens, Mayor A Message from the Festival President Welcome to the 52nd year of the Kiwanis Music Festival in Orillia! This wonderful event simply gets better every year, and it is my extraordinary privilege to have been part of the phenomenal group of people who made the 2010 festival another resounding success.

So many people are involved in putting this music festival together; the courageous performers, their dedicated teachers, the proud parents, the thoughtful adjudicators, the generous facility managers, and the many selfless volunteers who work so hard to bring it all together. On behalf of the Kiwanis Music Festival committee, I wholeheartedly thank every one of you. I also acknowledge everyone who has been involved in previous years, through whose accomplishments our festival continues to flourish.

I would like to share a personal story. My mother has volunteered with the festival since long before I was born, and I have vivid memories of attending performances as a small child admiring my brothers singing and playing guitar. Then I was a participant myself, singing in school choirs and playing piano. Next, as an adult, I enjoyed volunteer‐ ing myself and celebrating the participation of friends’ children. This year is my most exciting yet, as I am now the parent of a festival participant! It would be easy to assume that this is the pinnacle ‐ but my Mom assures me that it gets better still, watching her many grandchildren perform.

So, whatever your age and stage, and in whatever capacity you are joining us this year, please revel in the experience. You are an inte‐ gral part of something truly magical!

Enjoy the festival!

Marnie Bosco

06 Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival 2010 A Message from the Artistic Director On behalf of the 2009‐2010 Administration Committee it is a pleasure to welcome you to the fifty‐second annual Kiwanis Music Festival!

Over the seventeen days that this year’s Music Festival takes place, well over one thou‐ sand performances will be presented by student musicians of all ages. All of this year’s participants will have spent countless hours in preparation for their performances. By doing this, each participant has already achieved a great deal in developing small motor skills, in building self esteem and confidence, in increasing knowledge of what it takes to strive for a polished performance of music or a theatrical work, and in exploring the de‐ tails and intricacies of the chosen performance pieces. That is what each of the Festival participants have already achieved before they actually perform in the Festival.

To me, however, what makes a community music festival so worthwhile and important is the opportunities that it affords each of its participants to learn from each other as well as from the adjudicators. Again this year, each of our adjudicators is a seasoned and highly respected educator, pedagogue and performer. Our participants can look forward to being encouraged and educated by each adjudicator and each fellow student as well. I sincerely hope that when all the performances are over in this year’s Festival, each and every participant will consider that their participation was time well spent.

Again this year I would like to convey my sincere appreciation to so many people who play a role in enabling the Orillia Music Festival to continue to be a thriving and vibrant opportunity for Orillia and area student musicians. These include the many people who volunteer as session secretaries, as venue greeters, and as adjudicator liaisons. As well, those people who contribute financially by donating to the scholarship, bursary and Music Festival funds, and/or who contribute as Programme advertisers. Of course I would like to thank the members of the Orillia Kiwanis Club for their ongoing support over these past fifty‐two years. Also thanks to those area private music and performing arts teachers who help to compile the classes in the syllabus each year. Finally, my heartfelt thanks goes to the members of the 2010 Music Festival Committee who have prepared for this Festival over the last few months and who are such are a pleasure to work with in this very worthwhile community effort.

If you, or anyone you are acquainted with, is interested in supporting the Festival in a volunteer capacity, please contact our Volunteer Co‐ordinator Amanda Stanton. To contribute to the Scholarship/Bursary or Music Festival fund, please contact Rosemarie Freeman. If you would be interested in advertising in next year’s Festival programme please contact Festival president, Kiwanian Marnie Bosco.

If you have any questions or concerns or would like more information concerning the Festival you can contact me by email at mayumi‐ [email protected] or by sending a letter to the Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival, P.O. Box 2412, Orillia, L3V 7A3. Blair Bailey
