Ford r s F t.; ~ The early years of a decade are frustrating for social demographers t. like myself who are concerned with the social causes and G consequences of population changes. Social data from the most recent census have generally not yet become available for analysis s while those from the previous census are too dated to be of current s interest and too recent to have acquired historical value. That is c one of the reasons why, when faced with the necessity of preparing c a scholarly lecture in my field, I chose to stray a bit and deal with a historical topic. -

O. Murdock, of Washington, DC, from her ancestor, John M. Lea, a son-in-law of John Overton and were donated by her to the Tennessee Historical Society. The 1982 addition to the collection was given by Overton L. Murdock, of Bethesda, Maryland. The collection consists of 2.52 linear feet of shelf space and numbers approximately 1,025 items and three volumes. These papers are the property of the Tennessee Historical Society and are available on microfilm at the Joint Universities Library and the Manuscript Division of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Single photocopies of documents may be made for individual or scholarly purposes. However, for commercial use, or use that may constitute a copy right infringement, the user should obtain permission from the historical society. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection of papers of John Overton, numbering approximately 900 items, are composed of correspondence, two promissory notes, a Masonic document and a small diary of Nashville events listed yearly beginning in 1780, ending in 1851. The correspondence deals primarily with land cases of John Overton as lawyer and judge with some Tennessee politics intermingled. -

Captain Thomas Jones Gregory, Guerrilla Hunter Berry Craig and Dieter Ullrich Conventional historical wisdom long held that guerrilla warfare had little effect on the outcome of America's most lethal conflict. Hence, for years historians expended relatively Little ink on combat between these Confederate marauders and their foes-rear-area Union troops, state militia and Home Guards. But a handful of historians, including Daniel Sutherland, now maintain that guerrilla warfare, most brutal and persistent in border state Missouri and Kentucky, was anything but an adjunct to the wider war. "It is impossible to understand the Civil War without appreciating the scope and impact of the guerrilla conflict," Sutherland argued in A Savage Confl,ict: The Decisive Role of Guerrillas in the Civil War (2009). "That is no easy thing to do," he conceded, because guerrilla warfare was "intense and sprawling, born in controversy, and defined by all variety of contradictions, contours, and shadings." 1 Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China, is arguably the most famous and most successful guerrilla leader in history. "Many people think it impossible for guerrillas to exist for long in the enemy's rear," he wrote in 193 7 while fighting Japanese invaders. "Such a belief reveals lack of comprehension of the relationship that should exist between the people and the troops. The former may be likened to water the latter to the fish who inhabit it. "2 Guerrilla "fish" plagued occupying Union forces in the Jackson Purchase, Kentucky's westernmost region, for most of the war because the "water" was welcoming. -

THAT LIBERTY SHALL NOT PERISH: AMERICAN PROPAGANDA AND THE POLITICS OF FEAR, 1914-1919 by ZACHARY CHARLES SMITH (Under the Direction of John H. Morrow, Jr.) ABSTRACT This dissertation attempts to provide an understanding of the widespread anxiety, vigilantism, suppression of dissent, and violation of civil liberties that took place in the United States from 1917 to 1919 and argues that it can be found in some Americans‟ understanding of and reaction to racially-charged propaganda. As the United States inched toward war with Germany in 1915 and after declaring war in April 1917, many propagandists began referencing the allegedly inherent characteristics of Germans as evidence of German American disloyalty and the existence of a vast “Pan-German” plot to undercut or even destroy American democracy. The imagined conspiracy grew to encompass most of the fears that had plagued the Anglo Saxon middle-class since the 1870s – immigrant radicalism, race suicide, the capability of “racially inferior” immigrants to assimilate and self-govern, and the continued deference of African Americans. To many anxious Americans, Germany and German Americans became a very real entity to which these long-held fears could be transferred. American propaganda produced during the First World War, though, was not a cynical ploy to fool the American people into supporting intervention on the side of the Allies. Leading Americans – politicians, editors, and social elites – were convinced that a global German conspiracy threatened the security of the United States and hoped to enlist the American people in staving off the existential threat they believed racially degenerate Germany allegedly posed. -

COMBS Lexington, Kentucky A paper read before The Filson Club, June 6, 1960 Twelve years after the founding of Harrod's Station, the first per- manent English settlement in Kentucky, on the night of December 27, 1786, a small group of distinguished gentlemen met at the Dan- ville, Kentucky home of Samuel McDowell. He and Harry Innes, John Brown, Thomas Todd, Robert Craddock, Chris. Greenup, and John Belli "Resolved, that the persons now present do form them- selves into a society to be hereafter distinguished and known by the style and title of 'The Political Club,' to be governed by such laws and regulations as shall be hereafter agreed on" and to be "insti- tuted for the purpose of acquiring political knowledge."1 Such was the modest beginning of an unusually intriguing and ex- traordinary society! A political club composed of 25 to 30 men, meeting once a week to debate specified subjects. What is so unusual or fascinating about that? Schools, colleges, life in the great wide world, are full of myriad just such groups--investment clubs, debating clubs, clubs with a politi- cal connotation--we, today, are constantly hearing about them, going to them, reading about them. What sets this particular club apart, makes it worth investigating, and gives it an aura all its own? First of all, there is the work this club did. The importance of The Political Club of Danville lay in the training of its members for the role they played in the creation of the state of Kentucky. -
William Preston and the Revolutionary Settlement

Dr. Osborn is President of Pacific Union College. William Preston and the Revolutionary Settlement BY RICHARD OSBORN Patriot (1775-1778) Revolutions ultimately conclude with a large scale resolution in the major political, social, and economic issues raised by the upheaval. During the final two years of the American Revolution, William Preston struggled to anticipate and participate in the emerging American regime. For Preston, the American Revolution involved two challenges--Indians and Loyalists. The outcome of his struggles with both groups would help determine the results of the Revolution in Virginia. If Preston could keep the various Indian tribes subdued with minimal help from the rest of Virginia, then more Virginians would be free to join the American armies fighting the English. But if he was unsuccessful, Virginia would have to divert resources and manpower away from the broader colonial effort to its own protection. The other challenge represented an internal one. A large number of Loyalist neighbors continually tested Preston's abilities to forge a unified government on the frontier which could, in turn, challenge the Indians effectivel y and the British, if they brought the war to Virginia. In these struggles, he even had to prove he was a Patriot. Preston clearly placed his allegiance with the revolutionary movement when he joined with other freeholders from Fincastle County on January 20, 1775 to organize their local county committee in response to requests by the Continental Congress that such committees be established. -

Kabrick 12.1 Introduction snowfall occurs annually in the Ozark Highlands, the Springfield Plateau, and the St. Francois Knobs and Basins The central, unglaciated US east of the Great Plains to the MLRAs. In the southern half of the region, snowfall is Atlantic coast corresponds to the area covered by LRR N uncommon. SARAH G. HUMPHREYS: ANTEBELLUM BELLE TO EQUAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST, 1830-1907 MARY G. McBRIDE AND ANN M. MCLAURIN Although the biography of Sarah Thompson Gibson Hum- phreys seems to illustrate the development of a daughter of the planter class from antebellum belle to equal rights activist, by her own account Sarah was never intended by circumstances of heredity or education to be a conventional belle. Descended from a distinguished Southern family, Sarah was the daughter of Tobias Gibson of Mississippi and Louisiana Breckinridge Hart of Kentucky. In an undated autobiographical fragment written late in her life, Sarah described her mother, daughter of Na- thaniel Hart and Susan Preston of "Spring Hill," Woodford County, Kentucky, as a woman of "masculine intellect, great force of character and strength of will." Of Tobias Gibson, Sarah wrote: My father Tobias Gibson came of a long line of clergymen who were the pioneers of Methodism in the South. My father was a man of accurate education, of unusual culture and of broad ideas, far in advance of his time. Although by inheritance a large slave owner he was at heart opposed to slavery. He was also that anomaly amongst Southern men a "Woman Suffragist." He believed and taught me to believe that "taxation without representation" was as unjust to women as to men and he educated me up to the idea that our ad- vancing civilizaioff would sooner or later demand not only the political enfranchisement of women but their equal share in the control of the government. The family divided its time between its Louisiana sugar planta- tions and its l•ome in Lexington, Kentucky. -

In December 1860 South Carolina became the first southern state to secede from the United States. Eventually ten additional southern states left the Union. What political issues caused these states to leave the Union? Did they have the right to withdraw from the Union? What actions did the Senate take in response to the seceding states? This activity engages students in analyzing primary sources, including a Senate Seating Chart from 1863, to determine what the Senate’s responses and actions were toward the seceding states. Reviewing the Civil War and Reconstruction Center for Legislative Archives Address of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society NAID 306639 From 1830 on, women organized politically to reform American society. The leading moral cause was abolishing slavery. “Sisters and Friends: As immortal souls, created by God to know and love him with all our hearts, and our neighbor as ourselves, we owe immediate obedience to his commands respecting the sinful system of Slavery, beneath which 2,500,000 of our Fellow-Immortals, children of the same country, are crushed, soul and body, in the extremity of degradation and agony.” July 13, 1836 The Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society was founded in 1832 as a female auxiliary to male abolition societies. The society created elaborate networks to print, distribute, and mail petitions against slavery. In conjunction with other female societies in major northern cities, they brought women to the forefront of politics. In 1836, an estimated 33,000 New England women signed petitions against the slave trade in the District of Columbia.
