  • Sharing God's Secrets
    January 1st ‘The Joy of the Lord is my strength’ (Nehemiah 8:10) God’s joy is for all His children. All can have it. Who will allow His word to enter their hearts day by day, and receive and obey by faith what He gives from it. In this eighth chapter of Nehemiah we see the children of Israel gathered together with one accord and one mind, to hear that word anew. As God’s savants expounded it to them, joy filled their hearts, and we read that “ there was very great gladness” (8:17). Our past may have been barren and full of failure due to our stubbornness and foolishness. But the Lord is willing to forgive all our past, and to restore us to Himself, giving us a new joy – “ The joy of the Lord”. That joy is to be our strength- a joy which begins the moment we turn to him and then multiplies step by step as we go on with Him. January 2nd “ Rejoice, because your names are written in heaven”. (Luke 10: 17,20) The Lord Jesus says that the real ground of joy is the fact that our names are written by Him in Heaven. This is the ground of true heavenly joy. This gives joy unspeakable and full of glory – a joy that no man can take from us. For this is the beginning of joy, and tribulation cannot rob us of it. Is your name written in the book of life by the Lord Jesus – written with His nail-pierced Hand? Repent of your sins.

    1 India and the Biblical Old Testament By Gopal Stavig, Annals of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute 80 (1999), pp. 77-94 Little attention has been devoted to the interconnection between the Judeo- Christian religion as presented in the Pentateuch and the ancient religion of India. One example of their congruence is the remarkable correspondence between the Hebrew and Indian flood story, as described in the book of Genesis (Gen. 6:5 to 9:29), the Satapatha Brahmana (SB 1:8.1.1-6) and later in the Mahabharata (MB 3:186).1 The following thirteen affinities between Noah and the Indian flood hero Manu, indicate that the two stories are regional variations of the same legend. Quite likely two independent versions of the flood were combined into a single Biblical narrative. They are the Priestly code (P) and the Jahwistic document (J). While the Indian story tends to be more in line with the Priestly code, it parallels the Jahwistic documents for items six and the last part of seven and eleven given below.2 1) The flood heroes were virtuous men- Noah: “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation” (Gen. 6:9 P). Manu: “There was a powerful and great Rishi (sage) of the name of Manu” (MB 3:186). 2) God tells them to build a ship- Noah: “And God said to Noah ... ‘Make yourself an ark’” (Gen. 6:13-14 P). Manu: “Thou shalt then attend to my advice by preparing a ship” (SB 1:8.1.4). “Thou shalt build a strong and massive ark” (MB 3:186).

    Common Narratives of Adam and Swayambhu Manu We suggest that this Prophet lived at Pushkar on two grounds that are common to the two traditions. One, location of his abode was atop a mountain. Two, four rivers flowed out from here. Mount Moriah or Mount Meru The Biblical tradition tells of Adam living at Mount Moriah while the Hindu tradition tells of him living at Mount Meru. The Targum, a secondary Biblical text, says that after being banished from Eden, Adam “went and dwelt on Mount Moriah, to cultivate the ground from which God created him.”1 This means that Adam was created by God from the ground of Moriah and he lived here after God banished him from the Garden of Eden. The two ends of Adam’s life were located at Moriah. Therefore, we may assume that the Garden of Eden, where he lived between these two ends, too was located at or near the mountain of Moriah. The Hindu texts say that Brahma’s seat is located at Mount Meru.2 The common theme in the Biblical and Hindu descriptions is that creation took place atop a mountain as indicated in the adjective “Mount” added to both Moriah and Meru. Further, the two names carry the same consonants “M” and “r” suggesting that the same place is referred to in the two traditions. The elevation of Pushkar is at 530 meters above Mean Sea Level, while that of Ajmer, the city to its south, is at 475 meters. In other words, Pushkar is located barely 55 meters higher than Ajmer and scarcely qualifies as a “mountain.” However, the city is located in a valley surrounded by higher mountains.
