Waterbury Development Corporation 2012-2013 Annual Report Waterbury Development Corporation 83 Bank Street 3rd Floor Waterbury, CT 06702 2012 Annual Report 1 It is with great pleasure that I offer this report on the operations of the Waterbury Development Corporation (WDC) for 2012-2013. As you will see, this organization’s efforts remain at the heart of a vast range of economic and community development activities on behalf of the City. While this past year has seen its share of challenges, the pages that follow also represent an amazing story of success as we work together to build Waterbury’s future. I am honored to have joined this organization in May and to serve as its new Chief Executive Officer. I view the progress of this past year as a testament to the support and involvement of our Board of Directors and key City stakeholders, an extraordinary team here at the WDC, and of course to the leadership of my predecessor Leo Frank. I would ask that you take particular notice of the Community Impact Map on page 4. While this report provides a narrative of the various activities of our organization, I believe that this map is a powerful reminder of the incredible breadth and scale of WDC’s engagement in partnership with the City of Waterbury. As a key partner in creating a stronger business base, more vibrant neighborhoods and a better quality of life for our City’s residents, I look forward to the opportunity of building an even stronger and more effective organization in the year ahead.

WATERBURY PUBLIC SCHOOLS Waterbury Public SCHOOL / COMMUNITY RELATIONS OFFICE Schools News Update Vol. 11, Issue 2 November / December 2009 The North End Middle School Prevention HOLIDAY SPIRIT Team sponsored a hot chocolate sale this year. Manny Rocha, franchise owner, and Jorge Flamengo, district manager, from Dunkin Donuts on New Haven Road in Naugatuck provided hot chocolate to support families in need at the school. Staff donated candy canes, marshmallows, and cups. The sale raised $1,000 which allowed staff to pur- chase gift cards for 23 families. The par- ticipation by staff and students was over- whelming, and students really enjoyed this event. The Prevention Team appre- ciates everyone's generosity and hopes to sponsor this event next year. Holiday Greetings to Troops North End Middle School students created an assortment of letters and holiday greet- ings for our U.S. military heroes. The activ- ity took place during a monthly book club at the school and during classes that included many special education and handicapped students. Mary Beth Mason, Media Specialist at North End Middle School, passed the let- ters and cards along to the soldiers through Holiday Mail for Heroes, an organi- zation in Capital Heights, Maryland. Page 2 Waterbury Public Schools News Update Students from Wilby, Crosby and Waterbury Arts Magnet School AMS are to be congratulated for their participation at the city’s Inauguration Ceremony. This year, the city departed from tradition and asked students from Crosby and Wilby High Schools to prepare the food. Not only did this offer the students a chance to showcase their skills and gain valu- able experience, it also helped save the city money it might otherwise have spent on professional ca- terers.

  • Waterbury Public Schools ANNUAL REPORT 2010‐2011
Waterbury Public Schools ANNUAL REPORT 2010‐2011 CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Curriculum & Instruction Paul V. Sequeira, Ed.D. School year 2010-2011 was a balanced and productive one in all areas of the Curriculum and Instruction Department. In addition to the academic accomplishments, purchasing, implementation, and training in technology were at their highest ever. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act gave the district the opportunity to invest in technology for every school. This investment came with a built-in training module for staff on SMART Boards and hand-held technology. Perhaps the greatest inroad made in the district has been the development of the data warehouse, a vital tool for accessing a myriad of data for efficient operation of the school system. The Center for Curriculum & Research is proud to state that technology has grown over the last four years, bringing the district to a technological forefront amongst surrounding school districts in terms of hand-held technology, and SharePoint/Excel/Data Collection. Content supervisors have worked diligently in seeking and securing grant funds towards this end. Our greatest challenge will be the preparation for online testing for all students by 2014. As such, grants and district efforts through general funds will be fully explored for this initiative. • ENHANCING LITERACY THROUGH SCHOOL LIBRARIES GRANT Waterbury received this grant from the US Department of Education three times for a total of $1.4 million. Most of the money has been encumbered on technology which has increased motivation and student learning in the district. All 20 elementary schools participated, so we have equity across the district.
