V WOMEN’S STATE GRAND FINAL 2014-15

In 2014-15, North Hobart cruised to its second Women’s State Premiership with a comprehensive eight victory over the Wynyard Blues at Devonport Oval. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Wynyard were immediately on the back foot with Veronica Pyke bowling Michelle Purton (0) and Melissa Sue Allan (0) with consecutive deliveries in the first over to be on a hat-trick with Wynyard on just 1. A defiant, albeit slow 45 run partnership between Taylah Purton (21 off 51) and Cherie-Lynn Hawkins (22 off 39) helped Wynyard establish a platform they could look to build on in the final overs but when Purton was dismissed by Nicole Geeves, Wynyard collapsed to be all out for just 74. were shared around with Geeves (3/16 off 4), Belinda Page (3/17 off 4) and Pyke (2/4 off 4) all proving to be too strong for the Blues line-up. In reply, Wynyard got the start they were after when Suzannah Gale dismissed 2013/14 player of the final, Hannah Short for just 7. Pyke joined Angela Green and should have been out early in the innings but was dropped after skying what should have been a straight forward catch. The missed chance proved to be costly as Pyke (22 off 38) and Green (20 off 28) then built a solid 40 run partnership before Green was bowled by Hawkins in the 10th over. Page (11 from 10) then joined Pyke to guide the Demons victory with 37 balls to spare. For her all round performance with both bat and ball, Pyke was named player of the match. The win also meant that North Hobart recorded an unblemished 2014/15 after going undefeated in the CTPL. WOMEN’S STATE TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL 2014-15

A superb half century by Tigers’ rookie Sean Willis provided the foundation for South Hobart Sandy Bay (SHSB) as they defeated the Devonport Orions by 81 runs at Devonport Oval. Electing to bat first, Willis and opening partner Jeremy Smith started comfortably forthe Sharks moving the score to 35 in the 5th over before Smith (17 from 14 deliveries) was caught at long on with Trent Keep (8) following the skipper shortly after. Matthew Clark (17 from 10) and Harry Nichols (23 from 16) both came out swinging for quick runs combining for one boundary and three sixes as they complimented Willis at the other end. Willis was busy at the crease and continually rotated the strike with quick singles to bring up 50 from 45 deliveries before he looked to open up. SHSB were poised for a massive total at 4/120 in the 16th over but the Orions collected late wickets including Willis (66 off 52) to stifle the scoring. Looking for big runs, the tail were all caught out but Timm van der Gugten finished the innings in style with a 6 over long off to get the Sharks to 8/159 off their 20 overs. Orions Scott Mitchell was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4/16 off his four overs while Jack- son Saggers was also a handy contributor, capturing 3/33 off three overs. In reply, Devonport was on the back foot from the outset as they struggled to handle the pace of SHSB opening duo Gabe Bell (1/8 off 3) and Hamish Kingston (0/7 off 4). In compari- son to the Sharks, opener’s Miles Barnard and Tyler Dell had only managed 13 runs from the first 5 overs. A change of speed in the next over provided the breakthrough with off spinner Robb Macmillan (3/14 off 4) dismissing Dell for 5 before Macmil- lan combined with keeper Stuart Martin in his next over to remove Barnard (13 off 27). Devonport desperately needed to increase the run rate but consistent wickets halted any mo- mentum with the Orions stuttering to 7/78 off their 20 overs, Brad Moore (14 off 13) provided the highest score of the innings. Sean Willis (pictured left) was named medallist for his effort with the bat. MEN’S STATEWIDE TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL 2014-15

WOMEN’SCTPL STATE WOMEN’S TWENTY20 GRAND GRAND FINAL 2015FINAL-16 2014 -15

North Hobart continued its dominance on the CTPL Women’s competition after it downed New Town by 9 wickets to win their third consecutive premiership. With persistent drizzle forcing the loss of two overs at the beginning of the match, New Town were sent into bat and got off to a perfect start, with Erin Lawler and Paris Crowe combining for a 55-run opening stand, before Kirsten Allen claimed the breakthrough of Lawler for 17. In very next over, Kirstin Palfrey took the important wicket of Meg Phillips to have the Bucks at 2/61 off 10 overs. When Crowe was dismissed for 44 (off 34 deliveries) with the score on 80, Una Raymond-Honey (25no off 19) and Jo Blacklow (10 off 20) partnered up to score at a run-a-ball to help New Town reach 4/108 off 18 overs. For North Hobart, Palfrey (2/27) and Allen (2/25) were excellent with the ball while Veronica Pyke was once again at her economical best, allowing only 11 runs from her four overs. Needing early wickets, New Town got off to a perfect start, with Phillips removing Angela Green for just three, but Belinda Page (56no off 39) and Pyke (38no off 29) combined for an unbeaten 105-run stand to steer North Hobart over the line with six overs to spare. Belinda Page was named Player of the Final for her innings of 56 not out. CTPL WOMENS GRAND FINAL 2015-16

The South Launceston female team has swept all before them this season. The only match that they lost this year was in Round 10 to 2014-15 premiers Wynyard who they met again in the Greater Northern Final, where they comprehensively reversed the earlier result with a powerful bowling display backed up by some strong batting to finish the match in 11.1 overs. South boast some very good players with Caitlin Webster, Courtney Webb, Meg Radford, Amy Duggan, Stacey Norton-Smith, Ellie Matthews and Clare Munnings all selected in the Northern team to play in the junior intra-state cup matches in January and February this year, plus the big hitting Belinda Wegman who captains the team. South boast players with four of the top five batting averages in the Northern Competition as well as players with the top three bowling averages as well. Look out for the early big hitting of Belinda Wegman, followed up by the stylish Courtney Webb and Ianthe Boden. In the bowling stakes, Lisa Battle, Meg Radford and Stacey Norton-Smith are all capable of taking a bag of wickets, so this should be a terrific contest.

In the second instalment of the Women’s Greater North Grand Final, South Launceston chased down the required 70 runs inside 12 overs for the loss of just three wickets to defeat reigning premiers Wynyard.

Courtney Webb led the scoring with a run a ball 21 while Belinda Wegman and Caitlyn Webster contributed with 18 and 12 respectively before Deb Reynolds (6) and Ianthe Boden (3) finished the innings.

Earlier, Wynyard were immediately made to regret their decision to bat first with Stacey Norton-Smith (3/16) and Lisa Battle (2/12) tearing through the batting to reduce Blues to 5/22. The only resistance came from Taylah Purton who with 23 was the only player to reach double figures. Mag Radford (2/21) and Amy Duggan (2/15) the other Knights to finish with multiple wickets.

After defeating Claremont in the Kookaburra Southern Cricket Association Twenty20 Semi Final, Wellington met St Aidans in the Grand Final dominating the rain shortened 16 overs-a-side match to comfortably win by 9 wickets. At Eady Street Oval, St Aidans made 5/159, with Trent Graham (40) and Glendon Bentley (37) making solid contributions with the bat. In reply, the Warriors only required 13 overs to chase down the total, with veteran Ben Beams (94no off 42 balls) blasting 10 fours and 7 sixes to help the Warriors to the qualifying final of the Statewide Twenty20 competition. In the qualifying final against Cricket Premier League club Lindisfarne, the Warriors bowling stocks were on display from the outset, as they routed the Lightning out for just 56, with wickets coming from Shane Piuselli (3/14), Chris Hobson (3/22), Paul Curran (2/12) and Andrew Downton (1/8) The Warriors only lost one wicket as they chased down the small total in just eight overs, with Daniel Muir the leading run-scorer with 27no. In the Statewide Twenty20 Semi-Final, Wellington travelled North to play the Longford Cricket Club. After losing the toss and bowling first, the Warriors dismissed Longford for 133 in the 20th over, with Paul Curran an excellent contributor, claiming 4/22 off 4 overs. In reply, the Warriors lost opening pair Beams (9) and Muir (9) early, but an unbeaten third wicket partnership between Wayne Quarrell (62*) and Nathan Muir (45*) led Wellington to victory to secure their place in the Statewide T20 Final.

Riverside have had an up and down 2015-16 season, but have certainly put the runs on the board in recent weeks as well as putting in a consistently improving efforts in the Statewide Twenty20 competition. Whilst their first round match against South Launceston was washed out, Riverside went through to the Quarter Final on the basis of a higher position in the local T20 ladder and easily accounted for St Helens in the quarter finals. A semi-final win against a very strong Ulverstone side put Riverside into the final and they take some good form into this match. James Scott, the club’s English import has performed in all formats of the game this season and as an opener smashed a brilliant 82 from 56 balls and was last man out from the last ball of the match in the semi final. He will be ably supported by the Garwood brothers, Tom & Nick as well as the consistent Peter New and Patrick Mackrell who blasted 146no in a recent 2 day match. The team also boasts a strong bowling attack led by Captain Alex Saunders ably supported by Lyndon Stubbs, Alex Kerrison, Nick Garwood, Ramesh Sundra and young representative player Oliver Wood. The team are worthy representatives of Cricket North and should take it right up to Wellington in the final. Players to Watch and Competition Statistics James Scott—180 runs at 45.00 Tom Garwood—105 runs at 26.25 Lyndon Stubbs—12 wickets at 8.41 Alex Kerrison— 10 wickets at 10.00
