This was a solid Doctor Who read. The Broken Man takes place in Prague in It features inter-dimensional threats against the backdrop of revolution with the added mysticism of the Golem of Prague. The Doctor is triumphant but his victory is not without sorrow as a mother dies while trying to protect her daughter. Imaginary Enemies is more of a holiday interlude featuring Rory and Amy go up against Krampus as Doctor Who: Hunters of the Burning Stone: The Hunters of the Burning Stone. This is a pallet cleanser for what comes next, Hunters of the Burning Stone. The Doctor gets around throughout all of time and space. What happens to those he and his companions have saved, or not saved. This story reaches all the way back to his first adventures and brings back Ian and Barbara, his first unwitting companions. She and her father also are back. Solid story. Solid art. Solid classic Who. Aug 21, Lan rated it liked it. I actually really enjoyed this? Like, probably my favourite DW comic I've read. The reason I give it three stars is because the middle story a Christmas one-off and DW Magazine's farewell to the Ponds post-Angels Take Manhattan is meh at best and distracts from the rest of the book which is a continuing story. I get that this collects all the strips from a certain period of time and it would be weird to leave it out but it also doesn't belong in this collection IMO. Also, the art leaves someth I actually really enjoyed this? Also, the art leaves something to be desired. The pencils, some of which can be seen in the behind-the-scenes blurb at the back of the book, are awesome, but the colouring I think the art would have been stronger if it had been left black and white. But that's a problem I have with colouring in comics overall. Would it kill comic colourists to use a little more subtlety? A little more shading? Less garish palettes? However, the behind-the-scenes stuff a giant essay from the author which analyzes the , , , the Eleventh Doctor, Amy's Choice, and, somehow, James Bond really shows how much thought and care went into the story. The first story is fairly good, but I feel like the actual villains of the piece didn't quite live up to the promising setting Prague at the end of Doctor Who: Hunters of the Burning Stone: The Hunters of the Burning Stone Cold War. The second story, a Christmas tale set during Amy's childhood, is silly fun. The third and final story is interesting, with a different approach to the anniversary than in other media, going all the way back to the very b The final Amy and Rory stories from Doctor Who Magazineplus the title story, their take on the 50th anniversary. The third and final story is interesting, with a different approach to the anniversary than in other media, going all the way back to the very beginning of Doctor Who. It's also nice to see Ian and Barbara again! Feb 23, Tony rated it it was amazing. This is one of those essential non Telly adventures. Full of Doctor Who: Hunters of the Burning Stone: The Hunters of the Burning Stone and escapism and a love letter to the tv show. Comics really do deliver the best non Telly Doctor Who experience for me. Apr 15, April Mccaffrey rated it really liked it. Mar 03, Jean rated it liked it Shelves: doctor-whoswon I wanted more Ian and Barbara. I'm at the point where it is Steven and Dodo and I miss them. Overall I wasn't enraptured by this story but good use of old Who references. May 22, Doug rated it really liked it. Things that Doctor Who: Hunters of the Burning Stone: The Hunters of the Burning Stone be good are used for evil, things that can be used for evil are potentially good. There is subterfuge with a high cost, and honesty at a penalty. The Doctor gets all bravado in one moment, and then is faced with doubts in the next. While they do keep that Saturday Morning cartoon feel I praised in the linked review, above, they shunt it a little bit for some myth building and serious discussion. This works in places, and feels repetitive in others, but generally is a positive thing by several notches. The return of Ian and Barbara is a great moment, and is exactly the sort of thing that a DWM strip can pull in a way that few other mediums could, marred only mildly by giving Ian nearly all the best lines while not quite giving Barbara her due she even has a younger female to lecture, though rarely takes it. Still, Ian fans will be delighted. As for the individual stories, they both have a tendency to go for exactly the sort of thing that is world-destroying- yet-quickly solved, nuWho's constant bane, but at least the resolution to "Hunters of the Burning Stone", given most of an entire strip on its own rather than just a couple of panels fits the mythos of the show so beautifully that it feels like instant canon. The drawback is perhaps felt by an establishment of "yet-another-overreaching-human-organization" near the end. The show has long chided UNIT and Torchwood for being what the show's writers have made them, and while I can see the appeal of DWM having something like that on their own, it feels like another foil for the Doctor to lecture as they bumble through.
