1 The name and location of the hospital are not stated, but as noted below, Thomas Gadd S25549 stated that after being wounded at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse NC (March 15, 1781), he was sent to “Perkins Hospital.” Similarly, John Dowtin S6801 stated that after he was wounded at Guilford Courthouse he was taken to a hospital at a place called Perkin’s. This is a reference to the home of Error! Main Document Only.Col. Peter Perkins at Berry

Hill in Pittsylvania County, which was used as a hospital. It is likely, therefore, that many of the soldiers on this return were wounded at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, and that the hospital was the one at Perkins’s home at Berry Hill. 2 A Lt. William Evans S25069 states he was at the 'second .' This MAY be the William Evans listed on this return. Lt. Evans says in his application that he was wounded in the foot at 'German Town' but continued in the service. The papers in the file indicate that he suffered a permanent disability from his wound and it is possible that he was readmitted to the hospital to attend the wound he suffered at Germantown. In none of his papers, however, does Lt. Evans allege that he ever served under Capt. Wallace in Col. Buford's Regiment. 3 Capt. Andrew Wallace, who was killed in action at that battle. 4 Col. Abraham Buford. Buford’s troops suffered heavy casualties at the Battle of Waxhaws, May 29, 1780, but it is unlikely that so many wounded at that battle would have been admitted to the hospital as late as the date of this return, and Buford did not command troops in action after the Battle of Waxhaws. His name appearing so frequently on this return is therefore difficult to understand.. 5 Says he was a sergeant under Col. Hawes at Guilford Courthouse, was wounded there. Gabriel Gray S8590. 6 At the Battle of Guilford Courthouse Edward Oldham of MD was a Captain in the legion commanded by Lt. Col. Henry Lee, not Buford. 7 MAY be the Thomas Brummet Thomas Brummet (Brummett, Brummit) R1368 who says he was at Guilford Courthouse. 8 MAY be the Dennis Campbell BLWt66-100 who claimed service in the 4th Virginia Regt. of the Continental Line. 9 John Cammack, brother of William Cammack, filed a claim seeking the balance due his brother as an invalid pensioner of the US for service rendered under Col. Campbell at Guilford Courthouse. John says William died in 1824 without issue and without a surviving spouse. John also alleges that another brother, George Cammack, served under Campbell at Guilford. War Department letter dated June 23, 1933, says William Cammack was wounded in the right knee at Guilford and was invalided as a result of such wound. See William Cammack S24944 10 Possibly Capt. Archibald Denham 11 Col. William Campbell W4149 commanded a rifle corps at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. 12 Possibly Robert Jouett, who was an officer in Campbell’s regiment at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. 13 Possibly Capt. Thomas Bowyer BLWt268-300. 14 Alexander Westmoreland. 15 Possibly John Leavin or John Levin. 16 Probably Capt. Richard Anderson S10059, who was wounded at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. 17 Lt. Col. John Gunby commanded the 1st MD Regiment at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. 18 Capt. Perry Benson S10087. 19 Capt-Lt. James Bruff. 20 Lt. Col. Benjamin Ford, 2nd MD Regiment. 21 Thomas Mitchell S38231 22 I believe this man is the brother of William Cammack listed above William Cammack S24944 23 FPA BLWt2079-100 24 Capt. of Delaware. 25 FPA BLWt2026-100 26 Capt. Walter Muse. 27 Charles Clements S8214 28 Lt. Col. Henry Lee. 29 Nathaniel Harris. 30 Possibly Capt. James Culbertson. 31 James Howard S38045. Says he was wounded in the left shoulder at Guilford while under Col. Campbell; rendered incapable of serving; stayed in the Hospital until "1781." 32 Aquilla Smith W8740 33 Capt. Edward Edgerly. 34 Nathaniel Elbert. 35 Capt. William Beatty. 36 John Garner W8208. Veteran says he was wounded at Guilford; shot in the hand and lost two fingers. 37 Capt. Patrick Carnes BLWt2266-300. 38 Capt. Michael Rudulph BLWt945-300.

39 I believe this is very likely to be Thomas Holsten S36018 who says he was 'at the battle of Camden' and very badly wounded in the right arm at the battle of the Cowpens; he says he served under Kirkwood. 40 Possibly Capt. Thomas Ransdell. 41 Thomas Gadd S25549 served under "...Capt. James Bruff's Company of Second Regiment, then under the command of Col. Stewart, soon afterwards deponent was severely wounded in the head by a musket ball at the battle of Guilford Court House, sent to Perkins' Hospital in the State of Virginia, and about the first of June following, joined the Regiment at the siege of "96"' 42 David Hall S37989 43 Possibly Brownlee. 44 William Warren S11838 45 Most likely a reference to Gen. . 46 Samuel French. 47 This MIGHT be John Carr S35204 who claimed in 1818 to have been a lieutenant in the who became sick and was furloughed after the Battle of Camden. 48 This MIGHT be Edward Hood FPA S34922 who was awarded a pension as a 'maimed' soldier in the 1st Regt. of the Maryland line. He gives no details of his service except to say he served under Captains Samuel Griffin, Samuel Jones and Nicholas Gassaway. 49 The widow of a veteran named Christopher Cusick of the 6th Regt. of the Maryland line was pensioned FPA W3955. She says he died in December 1831. 50 This MAY be the William Haney was claimed service under Col Campbell for 18 months service under the 1818 Act, but he does not state in his application that he was wounded or sick. He says he served from May 1780 to November 1781 when he was discharged at Hillsboro, NC. 51 No papers, FPA file #11254 which shows that a land warrant was issued March 11, 179? [torn] for his services. 52 The papers in the file for John Stuart FPA BLWt2081-100 indicate that he was in Capt. Robert Kirkwood's Company and "was killed in Battle at the Cowpens or Guilford Court house in the State of North Carolina in the Spring of the year of 1781." This statement was made by Thomas Dazey S35881. Dazey does not claim to have been in the Southern Campaign in his own application—he claims 9 months service stationed in Delaware. 53 This MAY be the William Hill referenced in FPA #11321 (no papers) which indicates that a land warrant was issued November 1, 1791 to a William Lane, assignee, for services of William Hill, a private in Maryland. 54 James Wood W4717 55 Capt. Anthony Singleton. 56 Col. Charles Harrison. 57 William Freshold 58 Samuel Higgons or Samuel Higgins 59 FPA W10163 60 FPA W6260. An affidavit dated 1812 from a neighbor states that the veteran complained of wounds suffered at Guilford Court House. Also, his widow states "he received several wounds, lost one of his Eyes and when he died which she thinks was the 22nd of May 1819 had a Ball in his hip which was received during the time he was in service...." 61 Peter Jaquett 62 Samuel Tindale, possibly Samuel Tinsdale or Samuel Tindall 63 He MAY be the veteran identified in FPA BLWt11683-100 issued 1792—a Maryland Continental soldier. No papers in file. 64 William Rasdon 65 William Taylor 66 This is PROBABLY Charles Simpkins S39070 who served under Gunby. 67 Samuel Lapsley W9149 68 PROBABLY FPA S38214—he says he was in Virginia Continental line and served at Guilford Court House. 69 Highly PROBABLE FPA W9138. He says he was in battles at Guilford, Camden etc. 70 Elizabeth Higgins and the following women probably accompanied the troops as camp followers. 71 Richard Anderson S10059 72 He MAY be the Lt. John Vaughan FPA BLWt2269-200, no papers; warrant issued June 6, 1794, Wm D. Brown, assignee
