Challenges, Changes, & Choices

It is with a bit of trepidation and a great amount of delight that I step forward in my official duties as 4CS President.

The trepidation comes from having seen such great leaders before me, and following in their very impressive, large, footsteps. The delight comes from having such a great passion and love for our classified employees, and having an opportunity to some- how relay that passion statewide in ways that I normally would not have been given.

In my research as to what past presidents have said to you. I have noticed a similar pattern. We seem to always be faced with challenges, changes and choices.

Our challenges today are very similar as they have been in the past twenty years. How to get

S all of our wonderful classified in positions to be able to participate, to have their voice heard, and to have meaningful opportunities to grow professionally.

Recent changes that we have seen are the passing of AB 2558, which states that any funding appropriated for purposes of this article shall be allocated to the community college districts that provide professional development opportunities to both faculty and staff. Funding shall be disbursed in accordance with rules and regulations adopted by the board of governors. A change we are still waiting to see happen is actual funding which will be designated specifical- ly to professional development. One of the changes we can help orchestrate as classified, is to work with our bargaining units to negotiate flex credit for classified professionals into our contracts. This will give us opportunities to be away from our desk when funding does come forward.

Another recent change is many invitations coming to us to fill vacant seats on statewide com- mittees, and we have reached out to you. Many have stepped forward and we thank you for that.

We have also began plenary sessions to create resolutions that will ensure a lasting and effec-

tive way to communicate our needed perspective.

Volume 15, Number 2 Volume November 2015 November

Many years ago when I became a classified employee, I looked around and saw some inequi- ties that didn’t make sense to me. I could be part of the solution or part of the problem. I made the choice to be part of the solution, and was just naïve enough to ask simple questions that made radical changes in our district.

As President of the board of 4CS, I can tell you with great assurance that this board has chosen

to be available to helping you in any way we can. You are the reason we are here. ONNECTION Speaking of choices, Mission Hills hosted the North Retreat, the Gathering of the Senates, on August 5th, 2015 which was very well-attended. We also have some great opportunities com- ing up for you: January 29, 2016 will be our South Leadership Retreat which will be hosted by

Crafton Hills College from 9:30-4:00, and our annual CLI conference is being held in Ventura C on June 16-18, 2016. Our theme this year will be “Leadership & Governance: Adventures on the High C’s.” I hope to see you there!

With Great Gratitude,

Debbie Weatherly, 4CS President

Classified Professionals Step Up to Serve! 4CS is pleased to report that beginning last year and continuing into this year, we have appointed 4CS senate members to several statewide advisory groups critical to new initiatives aimed at improving student success. Classified professionals play an integral role in the campus environment and our perspective is sorely needed.

It is also important to note that written into much of the recent legislation that has created these new initiatives is a caveat that requires representation from all stakeholders.

As many of these appointments are very recent, we will report on these groups in more detail in our next issue. Many thanks to the following individuals for their participation!

 Brianne Holland (American River College) Institutional Effectiveness Program Initiative Advisory/Professional Development  Neill Kovrig (San Diego Continuing Education) Institutional Effectiveness Program Initiative Advisory/Policy  Maggie Baez (Cañada College) SP Advisory  Irina Marsant (Sacramento City College) Common Assessment Advisory  Christy Figueroa-Pettis (San Diego Continuing Education) 3SP Non-Credit Advisory  Shawn Ledet (Sacramento City College)– EEO and Diversity Advisory Committee  Dave Stephens (Butte College)

Making Finals Week a Whole Lot Nicer!

Butte College Classified Senate does what they can to make finals week a bit less stressful for students. Each semester during finals week, the senate has a table at the main campus and Chico Center with free coffee, scantrons, and sharp pencils. The project is their way of showing the students they care about the success during this very stressful time. The project also gives the Classified Senate an opportunity to tell students who they are and what they do. Pictured is Peter Dahl, Classified President for 2011-2015 showcasing the poster for free coffee and exam materials. The poster highlights classified positions and photos of staff in action.

Folsom Lake Supports Troops Folsom Lake College’s Classified Senate sponsored a “Treats for Troops” care package donation drive Sept. 1-15, 2015 at the main campus and centers in Placerville and Rancho Cordova. All constituent groups generously gave and two boxes of items were collected. The items, along with other donations, were part of 500 care packages the Rolling Hills Blue Star Moms and volun- teers (including Classified Senate President Rochelle Franco) assembled on Sept. 19, 2015 as part of the 2nd Annual Folsom Community Service Day. Intel generously donated $7000.00 to pay for the shipping costs to send the care packages overseas. Intel employees volunteered their time, many of them brought their children, to assemble the care packages. In this picture, Intel em- ployees are receiving instructions on how to pack the boxes—“think Tetris,” they’re told. Visit www.rollinghillsbluestarmoms.org for more information. 4CS Connections November 2015 9 Senate News From Across the State

Clovis Community College Becomes 113th Community College The State Center Community College District can now boast something not many districts can—it has the oldest and the newest community colleges in California with Fresno City College founded in 1910, and now Clovis Community College which was granted full- college status in July. The accreditation process was a huge undertaking for the campus. Nearly all of their classified professionals served on an accreditation committee. The cam- pus also has its own Classified Senate which had already been formed for several years be- fore the campus was moved to candidacy. A celebration was held on August 20 to commem- orate the occasion and featured remarks from Dr. Brice Harris, of the California Community Colleges. A new logo and school colors were also unveiled. Clovis CC is in the process of choosing a mascot, and will begin offering competitive sports such as swimming and diving and soccer in the near future. ESPN Reporter Helps Chaffey College Think Pink

The Chaffey College Foundation in coordination with the Vice President of Student Affairs was honored to welcome winning ESPN reporter Shelley Smith to the Rancho Cucamonga Campus on Friday, October 23rd for the college’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness event. Shelley Smith is a four-time Emmy-winning reporter for ESPN and former writer-reporter at Sports Illustrated. In May 2014, Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatment, which ended June 2015. A recent mammogram showed no evidence of disease, and she is considered cancer free. Smith continues to help spread the im- portance of early detection in breast and other kinds of cancers and has consulted with numerous charities, including the V Foundation, the American Cancer Society and the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Smith shared her inspirational story of breast cancer survival in an intimate setting in the college’s Sports Center.

This event would not have been made possible without the efforts of Chaffey College Classified Senate member, Justin Caudill. Justin Tweeted Shelley and to his surprise received an immediate response from her with a promise to come out and support this event. Justin became a breast cancer awareness advocate when cancer struck his own family. His mother was diagnosed in 2004, fought the battle and now is a survivor. “Thank y'all for supporting this cause and fundraising efforts I personally brought to Chaffey a few years ago with the support with my then Dean Dr. Eric Bishop. I can't thank our amazing Governing Board, admin- istration, and of course the Executive Director of the Foundation, Lisa Nashua, and her amazing team; Marie, Lissa, Sharon, and Janeth. I'm so blessed to work with amazing people.”

In addition to hosting Ms. Smith’s visit, the Chaffey College Foun- dation collected donations towards the purchase of personalized luminary bags that formed the breast cancer awareness just outside the college’s Sports Center. The Chaffey College Panthers (Athletics) have a long history of supporting breast cancer aware- ness through fundraisers, game dedications, and the wearing of pink uniforms and emblems during the month of October. This year’s event featuring Shelley Smith showcases the college’s ongoing commitment to cancer awareness and fundraising. Pro- ceeds from the night’s fundraiser will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to fund mammograms for local residents.

“Leadership is not about a salary grade or a title. It's about responsibility and making things happen for the organization and for the people in the organization. It's also about personal responsibility. As a leader, you impact the lives of the people you work with more than you will ever know. YOU have a direct impact on the quality of their lives, careers and future.” —Lee Cockerell, Former Executive VP of Operations, Walt Disney World® Resort
