Location: Omurtag municipality is located in immediate proximity to the Eastern Stara Planina’s northern slope, near peak Lisets. It takes up the southern territories of Oblast Targovishte (NUTS 3) and has an advantageous transport-geographical location. The town of Omurtag serves as a weighty transportation hub, being situated both to I-4 Sofia-Varna Republican motor road and the Sofia-Varna railroad. The secondary II-48 road from Targovishte to Sliven also runs through the municipality.
The municipality includes parts of the historic and geographic regions of Gerlovo and Slannik. The municipality has common borders with Turgovishte and Antonovo municipalities (Oblast Turgovishte), Vurbitsa municipality (Oblast Shumen) and Kotel municipality (Oblast Sliven).
The town of Omurtag is situated in the eastern part of the Fore-Balkan, between Slannik geographical area and Gerlovska valley. The town of Targovishte is located 24 km away from Omurtag; Shumen is 66 km away, Veliko Tarnovo – 78 km, Popovo – 43 km and the town of Kotel – 36 km, respectively.
Area: The area of the municipality is 400,8 sq. km., which is about 14,8% of Turgovishte oblast and 0,36 % of the country.
Climate: The climate is typical continental with hot summer and a cold winter season. The average temperature is 10.2 º C and the average rainfall amounts to 714 mm per sq. meter. Relief: The slightly hilly relief of the region contributes to the development of road and technical infrastructure, urban and agricultural areas.

Unemployment: The unemployment rate in Omurtag municipality for the period of 2009-2013 г. is much higher than the average for the country, the NUTS 3 region and the Southeastern region (NUTS 2). In 2010 this rate was the lowest (23,7%) in the 2009 – 2013 period. Due to the economic crises, the following years, this rate rises to 34,5% (in 2011) and 33,5% (in 2012), compared to the average 10,1% and 11,1% for the country.

The labor market in the municipality is not very dynamic. The employment opportunities are limited both in quantity and quality. Long –term unemployment is typical for the area and re-employment opportunities are few. However seasonal work is available in the agricultural sector.

In the structure of enterprises the largest share is the one of the micro enterprises - 91.4% of the economically active enterprises in the municipality. This is very much an advantage, as they quickly adapt to the changing market dynamics. Next are respectively the SMEs (small and medium enterprises). SMEs represent about 62.4% of the production, 66.7% of the net sales revenue (NSR) and 48.7% of tangible assets (fixed assets).

Industry: Manufacturing industry within Omurtag municipality comprises textiles & knitwear production, food & beverage production and machine-building. Production and distribution of electrical power, together with gas and water supply, construction and sewerage services add to the local industry.
Agriculture and forestry By the data of the Regional statistical office in 2011, 31 enterprises work in the sector of agriculture and they have produced goods valued at 8926 thousands of levs. This is about 15,1 % of the goods produced in the municipality. The sector has 7,2 % (8588 thousands of levs) from net sales and 8,7% (178) from employees. In 2011 the sector shows growth compared to 2010, as shown in the table below:

VI. QUALITY OF LIFE Education: Preschools in the municipality are represented by six kindergartens with 11 branches: 3 Kindergartens in Omurtag, 1 in village Kamburovo, 1 in village Vrani kon and 1 in village Obitel. The children attending those kindergartens are 689.
The school system includes 11 schools. In the 2012/2013 academic year, the schools, which were funded by the municipality budget were 10 and they teach about 1926 students:
. High School "Simeon Velchev" (IX-XII grade), town Omurtag; . Secondary School (V-VIII grade), town Omurtag; . Primary Schools (I-VIII grade): village Belomortsi, village Vrani kon, village Zelena Morava, village Kamburovo, village Obitel and the village Plastina; . Primary Schools (I-IV grade) - two schools in the town Omurtag;
Vocational education is represented by 1 Vocational School of Transport and Industry (PGTLP) in the town of Omurtag. The school has very good educational facilities: rooms and chemistry and computer labs and a workshop. In the 2012/2013 academic year there were 184 students in the school.
Healthcare: The municipality has one Hospital - „Mnogoprofilna bolnitsa za aktivno lechenie - Omurtag” LTD. The hospital is a municipal company, and serves not only the population of Omurtag municipality but also the population of Antonovo and partly Vurbitsa and Kotel, which makes more than 50 000 patients. Ambulatory care is provided by a Medical Center (MC) , two Diagostic and Advisory Centers (DAC) and affiliate medical emergency “CSMP – Targovishte”.
Culture: From the cultural institutions of most importance is the Historical Museum in the town of Omurtag. The museum has three restored buildings to host its exhibits. Other popular sites are the religious temples:

The presence of favorable natural conditions and clean air contributes to successful development of rural tourism, hunting and fishing. Dwellings: The dwellings in the municipality count to 9178, and most of them are made out of brick. By ownership, 98.2% of all homes are private and 0.8% state or municipal. For 1000 residents there are 422 dwellings and the average size of a household is 2,37. The highest share is the one of the three-bedroom homes - 44.6%.
