Former Advocate General European Court of Justice Professor Verica Trstenjak on BREXIT BREXIT – social and legal implications from an EU perspective The University of Sydney Business School, Discipline of Business Law Former Advocate General European Court of Justice Professor Verica Trstenjak on BREXIT Professor Trstenjak is a distinguished participant at the heart of regulation of the EU. She will speak to us about what BREXIT means from an EU perspective. The European Court of Justice is the highest EU court and the Advocates General have a central role in providing opinions on cases before the court. Professor Trstenjak has given important opinions on the Common European Asylum System, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the transfer of asylum seekers from one Member State to another. She has written on ‘rights’, interventionism and the duties of national courts in the enforcement of individual rights derived from EU Directives, notably the consumer protection Directives. Professor Verica Trstenjak is a professor of European law at the University of Vienna and an external scientific member of the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law. Since 2013 Professor Trstenjak is also interim judge (juge par intérim) of the civil service tribunal of the EU. From 2004 to 2006 she was a judge at the General Court of the European Union and from 2006 to 2012 an Advocate General of the European Court of Justice. She has published several books and more than 250 articles (also with SSCI). She was as lecturer at different international and European conferences (f.e. General reporter at International Conference of Comparative law 2014 , keynote speaker at International Conference of Consumer Law 2015). She is member of editorial board of several important legal journals European Law Reviev (SSCI), European Journal of Commercial Contract law, Ecolex, Italian Law Journal and others). She is member of International Academia of Comparative Law and Member of Academia Europaea and founding member and from 2013 also Council Member of European law Institut (ELI).     Bureau of the Court - Biographical Notes (in alphabetical order) updated: 22 February 2021 Emmanuel DECAUX President Emmanuel Decaux is Professor emeritus of the University of Paris II – Panthéon-Assas, where he taught public international law and international human rights law. He was also Director of the Doctorate School of international law, European law, International Relations and Comparative Law. He has published on topics of public international law, international organizations, with a focus on peaceful settlement of disputes and human rights. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Security and Human Rights Monitor publication. In addition to his academic career, Emmanuel Decaux held several functions within the United Nations. He was a member and then President of the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances between 2011 and 2019. Prior to that, he was a member of the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and a member of the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee. Emmanuel Decaux also participated as a member of the French delegation to the three meetings of the Human Dimension Conference (1989-1991) and to the first Human Dimension Implementation meetings organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights in Warsaw.
