Through him flows much of the interchange between religion, on one hand, and the complex of society and culture, on the other. Joe E. Barnhart1 But I think we have seen rather overwhelmingly that what the South does become will not be in fulfillment of all those grand expectations that it would develop models for national emulation of new political alignments or new kinds of cities or new economic prodigies or new never-equaled racial harmony. Pat Watters2 In June 2005, an elderly Billy Graham returned to New York City, a half-century after a mountain-top moment in his evangelistic career, a crusade that had stretched on for four months in that most un-Protestant and secular of American locales. Stricken with prostate cancer and Parkinson’s disease, among other health problems, and reliant on a special lectern that allowed him to sit while preaching, the white-haired Graham held only three services during what was billed as his final domestic crusade. Most of the 230,000-plus total attendees likely knew what to expect from this lion in winter. He soon came to love his work with working class parishioners and was reluctantly transferred to St Aidan’s Birmingham, where he became involved in a celebrated stoush with the bishop E. W. Barnes, himself a controversialist of note. Vidler’s Anglo‐ Catholic approach to ritual clashed with Barnes’s evangelicalism. Vidler began a prolific career of publication in the 1920s and 30s. In 1931 he joined friends like Wilfred Ward at the Oratory House in Cambridge, steeping himself in religious history and theology, including that of Reinhold Niebuhr and “liberal Catholicism”. In 1939 Vidler became warden of St Deiniol’s Library, Hawarden (founded by a legacy from Gladstone) and also editor of the leading Anglican journal Theology, which he ran until 1964, exerting considerable progressive influence across those years. He also facilitated a number of religious think‐tanks in these, and later, years.

I used to have great admiration for them until I figured their grave, treasonous concessions that they’ve done for years. The Southern Baptist Church has extra-church institutions and denominational structures yoking congregations today. The biblical church actually had totally autonomous congregations in no complexities. Denominational structures are just man-made with no biblical authority on anyone. Their church is also ecumenical. It was only until 2004 when the SBC (Southern Baptist Church) ended ties with the World Baptist Alliance (which was almost as extreme as the NCC and the WCC). The SBC does align with the China Church Council. Council K. H. Ting (“Honorable” President) is a member and he believes in denying the infallibility of the Bible, he denied the judgment of sinful people, he loves liberation theology, and believes that the truth is found in all religions. What a lie since Christ perfectly said out of his mouth that I am the way, truth, and the life and no man comes to the Father, but by me. 33rd Degree Freemason Brook Hays (who was a famous figure in the political history of the state of Arkansas) was the President of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1957. Billy Graham was an ally of Hays. Hays once believe in a moderate poison in terms of solving civil rights issues. He was a Phi Beta Kappa. Brook Hays was in the bar (of law) in 1922. He practiced first at Russellville, and then at Little Rock, Arkansas.

The venues which have banned him are: the ACC conference venue in Liverpool, the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield, the SSE Hydro venue in Glasgow, the International Convention Centre Wales in Newport, the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, The Arena Birmingham and another in London. The venue in Newcastle is the only one remaining. Despite this, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association which is organising the tour, said it will still go ahead and they are finalising sites for events, sticking to original dates. Peter Lynas, UK Director of the Evangelical Alliance, said they have members who support and have concerns about the tour, but “. venues, often owned by local people and run by their councils, are challenging freedom of speech and freedom of religion. We should all share concerns about that.” In 2018, there were protests over his visit to “The Festival of Hope” in Blackpool, Lancashire. The festival was organised by 200 churches from many denominations, including the Church of England, but 8,000 local people signed a petition against the visit. The Muslim Council of Britain called on the government to refuse Graham a visa on the grounds that comments he has made amount to Islamophobia and homophobia.

This was particularly perplexing to many outside (and within) evangelical circles, because as leaders of America’s “Moral Majority” for almost four decades, prior to Trump’s campaign, evangelicals had insisted that only candidates who set a high standard for personal integrity and civic decency, were qualified to serve as president.
