Welcome to Liverpool

With over 20,000 students, Liverpool John Moores University is one of the largest and popular universities in Britain. Students study in a city-centre environment in some of the most prestigious old and new buildings in the city. Students can expect to study in a well- planned, high-tech environment, making use of just about every learning aid - from chalk to the latest computer equipment.

The mix of people that have passed through, and often stayed in, the historic port has led to a culture that is vibrant, open-minded and friendly. We can boast the oldest Chinatown (with its many eating places) in Europe, the first public Medical Officer in the world (1835), the first ever regular passenger railway service (1826), a continuing history of technological innovation (the first ship to be extended by cutting in half underwent this on Merseyside on 1872, and we are still doing it), a developing expertise in software design and space research, one of the best orchestras in the world, two cathedrals, two world-class football teams, a popular music culture that has produced the Beatles, and much, much more. You will find this rich variety of experience reflected in your experience at Liverpool JMU.

Increasingly, Liverpool is becoming a student city - there are currently over 85,000 students following courses at LJMU and at other colleges and institutes across the city. This leads, as you might expect, to a good social life, with people to meet, sports to play, cheap places to eat, good bars, clubs and discos, museums, galleries, places to enjoy good company quietly - or even the possibility for solitude. Liverpool is the cheapest place in Britain for students to live - the cost of living is low and, there is ample, reasonably priced private accommodation, as well as places in university halls of residence.

In Liverpool you are well-placed for visiting some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain - the mountains and coast of North Wales are very near, the Lake District is no great distance, the train can get you to London in under 3 hours, and buses and trains offer good connections to major towns and cities.

Students do sometimes encounter problems and need to ask for help. Our welfare and counselling services are open to all and can help to find answers to most problems that arise. More support and a major social and services venue is offered by the Student’s Union, situated in Maryland Street (behind the Mount Pleasant site) and, at an early point in semester one we will ask exchange students to appoint two student representatives who are willing to act for students on School committee meetings.

Most students enjoy their time in Liverpool. Many stay, most want to come back. So much for pleasure! As for work, you can read about that in the pages that follow.

This handbook has been prepared to help you discover what the exchange programme at Liverpool John Moores University has to offer. You will find a lot of information and useful suggestions in the pages that follow. Every new beginning brings a challenge and a sense of achievement. We hope that your expectations of travel to Britain and study in an English-

3 speaking environment will be met. Both Academic and Administrative staff will do everything they can to ensure that your time in Liverpool gives you the best possible combination of learning opportunities inside the classroom and in the wide community abroad.

The main responsibility for making a success of your visit, however, lies with you. It is very important that you come to Liverpool with an open mind and the ability to adapt and fit in with the local conditions and practices in this country and this university. We do not aim to duplicate your experiences at home - this would be impossible since we have forty or fifty different exchange institutions in any one year! But we do aim to provide stimulating and friendly learning opportunities. We are proud of our relatively small classes and our good relationship with students. This does mean, however, that classes are sometimes full, and we do sometimes ask you to accept similar or alternative courses where timetable or funding difficulties are encountered. The spirit of partnership means that we take your views seriously and always try to improve communication with students and partner universities abroad.

With very best wishes,

Jarmila Hickman and Brigitte Hordern Exchange programme coordinators

Qualifications required for entry to the UK and LJMU http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/newsarticles/2012/january/78-english-language

IELTS scores: Students studying level between NQF levels 3 and 5 modules will need an overall score of at least 4.0 including 4.0 or above in each of the 4 components in order to satisfy UKBA requirements (this is equivalent to B1 standard).

Students studying any NQF level 6 module will need an overall score of at least of 5.5 including 5.5 or above in each of the 4 components in order to satisfy UKBA requirements (this is equivalent to B2 standard)

TOEFL (iBT) scores: B1: Reading – 4, Listening – 9, Speaking – 16, Writing - 13 B2: Listening – 17, Reading – 18, Speaking – 20, Writing – 17,

It is also possible to come for a shorter period of time (up to, but no longer than six months). If you let us know we can send you an offer letter which will enable you to apply for student visitor visa. However, please be aware that there will be very few modules available for students to take because the university has changed over to 24 credit, year-long modules.

Dear Exchange partners,

We are sorry that the new UK BA Tier 4 regulations which came into play on 21st April 2011, have caused such upset and confusion. We appreciate your concerns regarding the requirement for your students to reach IELTS 5.5 or 6 and understand that, in most cases, your students will not be able to reach this level.

I am, however, very pleased to tell you that we have found a solution to the problem, as long as your students can prove competence in English Language at a minimum of IELTS 4. (B1 of the CEFR), which I hope, will not be a problem for you. We will be able to enrol them on an Exchange Programme, in modules in years 1 and 2 (NQF3-5) of our degree programmes and they will thus satisfy the UKBA requirements. This will allow us to assign them a CAS (confirmation of acceptance) letter, which will be produced by our International Office.

For your reference, I attach below a link to the relevant UK Border Agency Tier 4 requirement, which also contains a list of approved English language test centres. Please note that your students may be required to attend an interview with UK Border Agency officers, either as part of their visa application or when they arrive in the UK. If they are required to attend an interview and cannot show at that interview that their English language ability is at the required standard, their application may be refused or they may be denied entry into the UK. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/adult-students/can-you-apply/english-language/

I sincerely hope that this is an acceptable solution to all concerned and deeply regret the upset caused, although this was totally outside our control.

Accommodation

N.B.: STARTING FROM THIS YEAR WE MUST RECEIVE YOUR APPLICATON FORMS BEFORE THE ACCOMODATION OFFICE WILL BOOK YOU INTO HALLS .

Halls of residence accommodation

Exchange students who intend to come to LJMU for the full academic year 2012/13 should contact the LJMU Accommodation Office . The Office is contactable by phone on 0151 231 4166 during these opening hours or by Email to [email protected] at all times. All Emails sent to the Office outside the opening hours will usually be answered on the following morning. Alternatively contact Liverpool Student Homes to enquire about available accommodation, either in private houses or in purpose-built student accommodation in the city-centre.

Exchange students who intend to come to LJMU for one semester only should contact Michelle James at Cosmopolitan Homes to book a bedroom at Gerard Manley Hopkins Hall. More information about Gerald Manley Hopkins Hall is available at : http://www.cosmostudents.com/properties/liverpool/gmhh.php

Please note that all non-UK students are required to pay for their accommodation in full in advance of arriving in Liverpool - there are no exceptions to this rule.

If you are unsure about what sort of accommodation is best for you or if you require further advice, please feel free to contact the Accommodation Office [email protected] .

North Western Hall, Atlantic Point, Grand Central and Great Newton Hall are all within walking distance of the Mount Pleasant Campus.

Please note that for accommodation in Halls of Residence you will often be required to pay for a fixed number of weeks (possibly until the end of July), even though the LJMU academic year finishes at the end of May. Unfortunately, most Halls of Residence are not owned by LJMU, so we have no control over this.

Private accommodation

We normally recommend that you arrange your private accommodation through Liverpool Student Homes. You can visit their website at www.lsh.liv.ac.uk

Please remember that the University has no control over private accommodation. Do not sign a contract unless you definitely want to rent the property as once you have signed the contract you are responsible for paying the rent for the full term of the agreement .

12

The staff at Liverpool Student Homes will take a brief look at your tenancy agreement for you before you sign it, although they cannot be held legally responsible in doing so. Remember, you get what you pay for! If a property is exceptionally cheap, ask yourself why? Is it in an undesirable area? Is the property in a poor state of repair?

Neither LJMU nor Liverpool Student Homes inspect such properties, and although private accommodation may appear a less expensive option than JMU halls, it is often worth paying slightly more for the peace of mind that comes from staying in a safe, well-maintained property.

Areas popular with students include /Sefton Park (Liverpool 17) and Wavertree/Allerton (Liverpool 15/18). We do not recommend the Kensington area of Liverpool (Liverpool 7) as, although many students live there quite happily, others have reported problems in this area.

Temporary accommodation

Once you have chosen your accommodation you should find out what is the earliest date at which you can move in. If you need temporary accommodation on your arrival in Liverpool, you can choose from the properties listed below or you can arrange something for yourself. There is a vast range of hotels and hostels situated in and around the city.

Temporary accommodation - suggestions You may need a place to stay while you are arranging your permanent accommodation. If so, we suggest the following:

Antrim Hotel 73 Mount Pleasant Liverpool L3 Tel: 0151 709 5239 Small, family-run hotel near to the Mount Pleasant Campus

International Inn 4 South Hunter Street Liverpool L1 9JG Tel: +44 (0)151 709 8135 Website: www.internationalinn.co.uk Email: [email protected]

Travel

Airport travel

You will probably arrive at either Manchester International Airport or Liverpool John Lennon Airport when you come to the UK. If you arrive at John Lennon, you can catch a bus from the airport, which will take you to the city centre for around £3. Alternately, you can catch a black cab from the Airport to the city centre for about £15.

If you arrive at Manchester Airport you can catch a train from the train station attached to the Airport directly to Lime Street Station, which is situated in Liverpool City Centre. Trains run approximately every hour and a ticket will only cost you about £16. From Lime Street you can easily catch a bus/taxi/walk to your accommodation.

For more details check relevant websites.

Frequently asked questions

Who is my first point of contact?

If you have any ACADEMIC queries, you need to speak to Brigitte Hordern who can help you with timetables and advise you on module contents.

If you have any ADMINISTRATIVE queries once you arrive, you need to call into the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) which is located inside the Aldam Robarts building. They will register you for your chosen modules and you need to inform them if you have any change in your circumstances. Opening hours are: Mon-Thurs 9:00am – 9:00pm, Fri 9:00am-7:00pm, Sat-Sun 10am-4:00pm

Where will most of my classes be held?

You will be based at the Southern Campus site on Mount Pleasant. John Foster Building or Redmond Building is where you will attend most of your lessons. The rooms are numbered according to which floor they are on; for example room G03 will be on the ground floor, 101 is on the first floor and 207 is on the second floor.

The IT Suite is on the second floor of John Foster Building and classroom B05 is situated in the basement.

The Student Zone and the Library are situated in the Aldam Robarts building in the gardens at the back of John Foster Building. It is also referred to as the LRC which stands for the Learning Resource Centre. In the LRC is the transaction desk where you will go for all administrative programme related queries. Across the road and behind the Learning Resource Centre is the Haigh Building where you will find the Student’s Union, the Workbank and student shop. There is also a cash point, café and bar there.

What is LJMU WEB?

LJMU WEB is the Campus Wide Information Service, and can be found by logging on to any computer within the University. If you navigate around LJMU WEB you will find that it can answer most queries you may have. It includes information on modules, degree courses, other Schools and gives details of current issues and events at JMU. We strongly recommend that all students familiarise themselves with this internal website as it will make your adjustment to life at JMU so much easier. The IT induction will prove very helpful – make sure you attend it.

How does JMU keep in contact with its students?

At JMU we use the University EMAIL if we need to contact you, so this should be checked every other day at least. We also use BLACKBOARD which is a virtual

15 leaning environment known as VLE. Blackboard will be used by your lecturers to inform you of room changes, post lecture notes etc. You should also check the NOTICEBOARDS on a regular basis.

How do I get my student card?

You will be given a form which you take to the Learning Resource Centre. They will process the form and give you your card. There is ALWAYS a long queue for processing student cards at the start of the year, so please be patient.

Once you have your card, you can go to the Learning Resource Centre and get access to the computers.

It is important that you carry this card with you at all times to access University buildings also if you need to request any documentation from the Student Zone (LRC) you will be asked to show this as proof of enrolment. Another reason you should carry the card with you is that it shows your student identification number which will be requested for administration purposes.

How many modules am I allowed to study?

Your own University will have discussed with you how many modules they wish you to study and will have advised you if they have any specific requirements. We do not advise you on what modules you should choose, this is your decision. However, you cannot study for more than 60 credits in a semester (5x 12 credit modules. This equates to 120 JMU credits and 60 ECTS credits for the year. You are allowed to study modules from other schools but the Liverpool Business School will remain your “Home” School and deal with all your administration. You can choose a maximum of two modules from other schools.

How do I register for a module?

A copy of the module choice form will have been sent to you with your application form in your welcome pack or via e-mail. Enter your name, and your home University and also the code and title of each module you wish to study. It is very important that you give us ALL the required information, otherwise we will not be able to complete registration. Please bear in mind that we cannot guarantee you will be able to take all of the modules you choose as the more popular tutorials fill up very quickly. Register your modules as quickly as you can and have a couple of modules as a reserve to avoid disappointment. You can hand your module choice form into the Student Zone (LRC) to be processed once you arrive. N.B. Level 3 modules require that you have attained Level ‘F’ in your English test. If you decide you wish to amend your choices, you will ask at the Learning Resource Centre for a MODULE AMENDMENT FORM. Again, please complete all relevant information in full. Modules cannot be changed after week 2 of term without permission of the Course Tutors. Please note that tutorial groups must NOT be changed.

16

How do I contact my Module Leader?

We have Staff Availability details, for all full time lecturers, on the School notice boards. These give a room number, telephone number and scheduled times set aside for students. You can also contact staff via email, which is easier in the case of part time lecturers.

When are the exams?

Some exams take place in mid-December but mostly during April and May. We strongly recommend that you do not book your flight home until the last day of the semester.

When do I get my transcript of results?

The transcript of results for first and second semesters, are sent out to your home address and your home University usually by the end of July.

How do JMU credits compare to ECTS credits?

In ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), normally 30 credits represent the workload of a semester and 60 credits would be awarded for the year. So an approximate conversion would be : XX JMU credits divided by 2 to obtain ECTS credits.

Student Mentoring Scheme

We have set up a student-mentoring scheme involving British students here on degree courses and incoming exchange students. What we hope to do is send you the details of some British students who will become your link whilst you’re here. We then hope you will be able to get help and guidance from the students prior to your arrival to help you settle in Liverpool.

If you are interested please sign the enclosed authorisation form which will give us permission to pass on your contact details to British students should they request them. You could then correspond via letter/e-mail/telephone prior to your arrival to get more information about your studies here.

21

Academic regulations

The academic system at Liverpool John Moores University is based on the accumulation of credits. To complete a year’s work successfully, a student has to pass a sufficient number of modules in order to gain 120 credits. However, Exchange students do not necessarily have to gain 60 credits per semester, 36 or 48 credits will be sufficient if their University agrees. Programmes of study, or courses, are made up of modules, and each module is valued in credits. A module is usually taught for two to three hours a week, and requires another six to eight hours private study - a total of approximately ten hours work a week over fifteen weeks. Most Modules are year-long and are worth 24 credits, although there are still some modules of 12 credits each.

To gain credits for the course, a student has to complete all the coursework and pass the examination, with a mark of 40% or more.

We stress the importance of arriving on time in Liverpool, as late arrival will only result in missed information. Students are not permitted to leave early at the end of the semester as exams often take place during the final two weeks of the semester. Under no circumstances will the booking of flights home be accepted as a reason for missing any assessments; you will merely receive a zero mark.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MAY NOT REGISTER FOR MORE THAN 120 CREDITS IN ONE ACADEMIC YEAR or 60 credits in any of the two semesters.

You choose your modules before arriving in consultation with your own University. This then ensures you are choosing subjects to complement your studies at home. Please note we cannot guarantee that all modules listed will be available but making an initial choice now will help. Exchange students have to register for the modules they want to take, and then complete the coursework and the assessment, including the examination. It is not possible to ‘sit in’ on modules that look interesting and we do expect students who have registered for modules to complete them.

Please be aware that the British university system is different from the systems in other European universities. You may be surprised to find how few modules British students study, compared with your own university. On the other hand, you will discover after a while that the amount of work a student is expected to do for each module is greater than you would do in your own university.

Lecturers may set coursework for students to do in private study time from one week to the next, either class exercises or background reading and you will be expected to keep up with this coursework. Many exchange students come to Liverpool JMU thinking that they should go to twenty or twenty-five classes per week. This is not normally possible under our system.

22

English Testing

On arrival all exchange students will be asked to complete the Computerised Language Test. Testing takes place during your Induction Programme. The tests will be held in the IT Suite on the second floor of John Foster Building in Mount Pleasant as marked on your map. The test will take approximately 30 minutes.

NOTE : this is not a pass or fail test; everyone passes, but at different levels. Following your initial attempt at the test, you will be allowed one more attempt only. Both attempts at the English test must be taken within the first two weeks of the semester.

Finally, during the first two weeks of the semester any problems regarding timetabling must be resolved. This is also true about signing up for the appropriate translation group.

Please remember that both the academic and administrative staff will be on hand to help you with any queries about the test or other matters.

Advice from former exchange students

“Arrive in time for the induction programme – this gives essential information on modules, layout of the campus and life in Liverpool in general.”

“Be aware that although you don’t seem to have many classes, they do generate a lot of coursework! Decide whether you can handle the assignments. Perhaps you might need to select only a few modules, and do them well.”

“Avoid making comparisons between your own university and Liverpool JMU.”

“Assessments, in particular, can be very different. Expect lots of different types of assessment (for example essays and presentations, as well as exams). Be prepared to have to take assessments at any time of the semester, not just having one exam at the end.”

“Make sure you check your emails and the notice board on a regular basis; you could miss important information”

“Do not wait for English people to approach you. Initiate relationships by introducing yourself.”

“Maintain a balance between work and the social life in Liverpool!”

“Try not to forget that Liverpool, like any other big city, contains risks. Take care, don’t trust everyone you meet and avoid walking alone at night.”

23

“Do not stay at home with other exchange students. Take advantage of all the clubs and sports activities available at the Student Union.”

“Be flexible about the different teaching methods used at LJMU.”

“Spend your experience abroad in the right frame of mind. Be open minded and learn about the new culture.”

“Try and fit in some sightseeing whilst in Liverpool. The city has some magnificent architecture and a visit to the Albert Dock and the Museums are well worth while”

“Bring a good dictionary with you as they are often in short supply at the Library, particularly at Exam time”

24

Programme changes

At present the university is going through extensive changes and we are moving onto a new computer system (SIS). The modules are currently being revalidated and transferred onto the new system so all course information is subject to change. You will find course details attached at the end of this handbook. Please be aware that some modules may not run.

As explained earlier, you are only allowed to study a maximum of 60 credits in each semester (maximum 120 a year). Once you are settled in to your classes, after a few weeks, we will ask all students to look on the Blackboard system to check their module registration. It is extremely important that you check Blackboard when we ask you to, as the modules we have registered you for, are the modules, which will appear on your transcript of exam results. If you change a module without informing us this will cause problems later on in the semester. Note that tutorial groups must NOT be changed.

26

Assessment and final transcript

At the end of the academic year there is an assessment period, after which examiners meet in a ‘Programme Assessment Board’ or PAB. The marks for your modules are then made available on Blackboard. A transcript will be sent to your home address / your Home University.

Please note: the School will not issue any other kind of record of your work, apart from the official university transcript. We would stress the importance of keeping all

• module outlines • coursework details • other related materials as proof of what you have studied in each module. This will serve as information for your tutor in your home university, giving him/her an idea of course content.

International study

As we have been forced to reduce our Erasmus quotas in recent years, we have found that more students than ever would like to extend their stay in Liverpool. If you decide that you would like to continue to study at LJMU but all the Socrates places in your University have been taken, you can apply for International Study - but this is a fee-paying course.

The cost of living in Liverpool

Food prices are generally comparable to your own country, however, many of our Premium supermarkets; i.e. Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda have their own budget range of staples. A more recent addition to our city are the European chains of Lidl, Aldi and Netto supermarkets, names you may recognise, which are popular with our present intake of students

Prices vary so, as with most things, it pays to shop around.

Health services

All overseas students are strongly advised to register with a local GP to provide health care should the need arise during their stay in Liverpool: See the University Medical Centre web pages http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/Medical/ for further details of opening times and G.P availability.

The NHS operate a walk- in service for non emergency treatment in the city centre at Great Charlotte street, Liverpool 1, and a 24 hr helpline on 0845 46 47.

Emergency Dental Treatment

GPs and casualty departments are unable to do dental work. If you are not registered with a dentist, in an emergency call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 and they will be able to advise you on the most appropriate service for you.

Please be aware that if you need to seek dental treatment in the UK you will be liable to pay dentist’s charges.

Information Guide for Incoming Erasmus Students 2012-13

Welcome to Liverpool Liverpool is a vibrant and internationally renowned city that has something to offer all visitors . Founded in 1207 by King John and given the name ‘Livpul,’ it was not until the seventeenth century that Liverpool began to establish itself as an important shipping trade centre. A massive growth in population and significance to industry saw Liverpool receive its status as a city in 1880. A series of rapid changes affected Liverpool during the Twentieth Century including massive damage during World War II, industrial decline, and of course the birth of the Beatles. The last twenty years have seen the city re- establish itself as a cultural and civic centre, its status as European City of Culture 2008 is only one indication of the continued renaissance of the city.

Liverpool has always been an important, vibrant and culturally diverse city and will continue to be relevant throughout the twenty first century.

Welcome to Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) The University was originally founded in 1825 as Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Arts. Continued growth during the twentieth century eventually led to the University being granted Polytechnic status leading to University status in 1992. LJMU has over 24,000 students and over 2,000 staff. LJMU is committed to Internationalisation and aims to maximise the benefits of International participation for the institution and the visitor. Our continuing success and popul arity with European students is indicative of our commitment to the Erasmus programme and our students. We have international links in 80 countries world wide and we are a UK leader in teaching subjects such as sports sciences, health studies, physics and astronomy. There are five faculties spread out over several campus centres throughout the city centre and one campus centre three miles away.. In terms of variety, vibrancy and creativity, LJMU is a reflection of the city itself.

For more information please visit www.ljmu.ac.uk

There is a Facebook page for the Erasmus programme at LJMU allowing you to speak to other Erasmus students (including Erasmus students from LJMU) and LJMU staff involved with Erasmus. Please search for the page on Facebook with ‘ LJMU Erasmus ’ or [email protected] .

Specific information on accommodation for Erasmus students can be found here: http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/Accommodation/59128.htm

36

Alternatively Liverpool Student Homes can help with accommodation searches:

You should try to arrange your accommodation before arriving in Liverpool. However, if you do not manage to do this then arrange temporary accommodation in a hotel/hostel until your residence is secured.

Library Facilities Liverpool John Moores University has excellent learning facilities. There are three Learning Resource Centres in our three campus areas. Each centre stocks the resources for the Faculties it supports. The available library facilities include books, journals, special collections, and plenty of I.T. equipment. The libraries also include dedicated areas for group study and access to audio/visual equipment. For more information on the resources available please visit http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/lea/ .

Liverpool Students Union The Liverpool Students Union (LSU) is an independent body that represents the students of LJMU. The Union is run by elected students and is involved in many areas of student life. The aim is to provide support for LJMU students and to improve their experiences at University. LSU provides support for social/sports clubs, and provides information and support on a number of issues such as health and finances.

The Union has three locations throughout LJMU and provides everything that you need to become part of the student community. More information on the Liverpool Students Union and the support you can expect when you arrive here can be found here: http://www.l-s-u.com

Student Welfare Services The Welfare Advice Service is available to assist students with any problems they may experience whilst at University. The aim of the service is to provide appropriate, confidential and effective advice to students to aid in the resolution process. Students must also take responsibility for their part in this process. The office endeavours to provide practical assistance where possible. However, advice will be given where necessary if other departments or outside agencies can be of greater assistance. Advice is also available to students with financial difficulties, international students and to those students with disabilities. Welfare staff are available throughout the academic year and can be found at the Campus Centre’s around the University.

The Student Welfare website is located here http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/studentadvice/index.htm and provides advice on academic issues, health, counselling, and chaplaincy and faith services.

The Overseas Student’s Welfare and Liaison Service There are two organisations that plan social events and trips to places such as the Lake District, Shakespeare’s home, and Alton Towers. These are both highly recommended. Please see the following websites for more information: http://www.wirralowl.co.uk/ http://www.l-s-u.com/events/

English Language Support English classes are available twice a week for all incoming students. More information can be found here http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/International/121239.htm

Student Discipline It is essential for a University to create and maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to the academic and social well being of the University community, and to discourage behaviour from students that will have adverse effects on this well being. Hence students are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a manner that demonstrates respect for the University, its staff, fellow students and property. Students who fail to meet these basic standards will be subject to the disciplinary procedures of the University. These exist to ensure that students are treated fairly and equitably, taking into account their commitment to study.

Serious breaches of the disciplinary code constitute gross misconduct and may lead to expulsion from the University.

Insurance

37

Please check with your home University regarding what insurance cover you will have whilst you study with us. It is also worth getting the European Health Insurance Card before you arrive. These should offer enough cover but if you want insurance against theft or fire, for example, then you will have to take out an insurance policy when you arrive. If you wish to drive a car in the UK then you must have an insurance policy. Student Services or the Liverpool Students Union will be able to help you with your search.

Healthcare The European Health Insurance Card allows you free treatment from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). You are also entitled to medical support at LJMU, however we recommend that all students register with a doctor as soon as they arrive. Please visit http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/healthandwellbeing/index.htm for more information.

Money, Expenditure, and Tax When you arrive in Liverpool, you should open a bank account as soon as possible. There are many different options available to you, but all the banks offer good student packages. To open a bank account you will need proof of identity and some money to put into the account. There are many banks throughout Liverpool and it will take approximately a week for the account to be opened.

It is estimated that a student visiting Liverpool will end up paying between £5,000 and £7,500 per year for food, bills, accommodation etc. If you have concerns about money and budgeting Student Services will be able to advise you.

All UK residents are eligible to pay a Council Tax for basic services. Students that are in a Halls of Residence or a house occupied by full time students do not have to pay. This should apply to most incoming Erasmus students. If you would like more information then please visit http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/feesandfunding/117786.htm

All students that have their own television must also pay a TV license. Information on that can be found here http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/NewsUpdate/index_91781.htm .

Enrolling at LJMU

To enrol at LJMU you must provide:

• Proof of Identification (passport). • Proof of Home address (in your country of origin – a letter addressed to you). • Term time address (if possible). • A transcript of records. A transcript should also be sent in with your application – so please keep a copy. • Module choices – what you will be studying at LJMU. • A letter confirming your acceptance as an Erasmus student, this is available on the final page of this document.
