MICHIGAN ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2005 BAY VIEW ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Bay View Association was organized by a group of United Methodist ministers along the shore of Little Traverse Bay in 1875. Throughout its 129 year history, the Association has presented a summer assembly program, including outstanding ministers and lectures, vesper concerts, artists, recitals, recreations programming and other cultural events consistent with its mission of understanding and viewing the world from a Christian perspective. During the 2004 Assembly season, 35 music students from across the country participated in the Conservatory of Music and a talented staff of vocalists and musicians entertained concert attendees. The Department of Performing Arts presented the musical, “The Fiddler on the Roof” the opera “Die Fledermaus” and the play “The Odd Couple.” Outstanding sermons and lectures were presented by Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong, Bishop Emerson Colaw and others. Our 2005 Assembly program will include Dr. Maxie Dunham and evangelist Tony Campolo. The Board of Trustees began planning for the future. An Auditorium Renovation Committee was appointed to survey the community on future uses of the 1700 seat John M. Hall Auditorium and Voorhies Hall and recommend repairs and renovations to both structures. The Association ended the 2004-2005 fiscal year with a General Fund surplus of more than $46,000. The Association was designated as a National Historic site in 1976 because of the Unique Queen Anne

DISABILITY AWARENESS MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES Sunday, October 18, 2009 Marcus D. Smith, Guest Lectionary Liturgist Minister of Music, Ark Church, Baltimore, MD and W. Patrick Alston, Sr., Lectionary Team Liturgist Worship Planning Notes The Church has failed to adequately accommodate and include its members who have disabilities. Beyond singing ministries offered by a few churches and wheelchair ramps in a few churches, little evidence can be found of our purposeful attempts to include all in the worship and activities of the Church. This must change! Technology now makes so much possible if we have willing hearts and minds. Many congregations now have within their ranks numerous persons who have Down syndrome or autism, who are blind or deaf, who use wheelchairs, or have other disabilities. Most of these persons are more than able to participate in the life of the Church if we assist them. Many of your church members have disabilities, as statistically one in five individuals has a disability. Present to the congregation a survey that includes questions about each member’s abilities, needs, and desires to be part of your church’s activities. Many people have disabilities that are not immediately apparent, such as vision difficulties, physical challenges, or mental illness, so it is important to ask everyone if his or her needs are being met. Do a thorough assessment of your programs and policies to determine if you have faithfully done all that you can do to include persons with disabilities and those who are differently-abled in the life of the church. This assessment should take no more than two months to complete and should include a plan for implementation, a budget, and timelines for each act that is to be implemented.

Library. Ethnomusicology Archive Los Angeles, California 90095-1490 Abstract: For nearly a century Los Angeles has played a major role in the development of Gospel music. In order to document this history and raise awareness about Los Angeles' role as a center for contemporary Gospel, the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive and the Heritage Music Foundation propose Gospel Archiving in Los Angeles, or GALA. This yearlong project focuses on helping HMF develop a strategic plan; expanding Los Angeles Gospel and related music collections in the Archive and at HMF; digitizing and increasing access to Gospel collections held by HMF and others in the Los Angeles Gospel community; hosting an end-of-the-project symposium at UCLA; and establishing and maintaining a CBO Internet server that will allow community members to both access and upload digital copies of recordings while situated outside of the Archiveï½s walls.
