Comments about Nexus - Argent

Captain America

Not very good at reviews, but I thought I'd give this a go.My favourite Argent album. Never really got off that much on 'Hold Your Head Up', so this came out after the follow up to that and they were able to do their own thing. No singles here really, the record company looked for one of course and decided upon 'Thunder and Lightning'. It feels like the band just got down and wrote some stuff without pressure, which I think makes it a great altogether album. Not a bum track here in my opinion. It may need to grow on you, but then most of the best albums do. I've chosen 'Gonna Meet My Maker' from here to be played at my own funeral, seems appropriate. The first three tracks are really all just one track. I guess on the CD it is possible to separate them, but it's certainly not on this vinyl version. Epic is the label and so is this track. Next comes 'Love', which is another Ballard love song. Music From The Spheres is very prog 1974, some of it almost has hints of Supertramp, but a bit too jazzy, like most of this album, and Argent in general for that matter. The track takes you on a ride, which you don't want to get off, seems to end then takes you back up again for another turn, great stuff.Thunder and Lightning starts side two and it is the most commercial sounding track, so obviously why it was chosen as the single. Ballard's last studio album and he left with some great tracks including this one. I understand he did not leave on bad feelings and even suggested his replacement. Then the last three tracks, Keeper Of The Flame is Argent at it's best, with Rod going great guns on his keyboards. They seem to be really enjoying themselves on this track. Man For All Reasons is Ballard leaving another great song that could also have been a single maybe, with an edit. Russ would be missed for his songwriting skills, if nothing else. This albums is great because of the two different writing styles included. Finishing with Gonna Meet My Maker, a typical rock song, chords included. Talking about something we've all gotta do.This was followed by Circus, (if you exclude the live album,) which doesn't compare to this, in my opinion, sounding far too contrived. Maybe they just missed Russ.
