Company History Bill Bressington, the founder of Midel and the driving force behind S.U. in Australia, became involved in S.U. fuel systems during his apprenticeship from 1945 to 1950 at the then S.U. distributors, York Motors. An affinity with this unique carburettor saw him follow the distributorship, first to Automotive Carburettors until 1960 and then to Lancaster Motors. In 1970, Bill set up Partco Trading which evolved into Midel Pty. Ltd., whose Illawarra Rd.premises became a magnet to British-vehicle owners and S.U. enthusiasts. The company expanded and moved to their present modern warehouse facility in 1984, still concentrating on importing and distributing S.U. carburettors and fuel system products. Of late, the purchase of superseded factory stocks and the reconditioning of out of production units for early vehicles, has become a Midel speciality. Over the years, Bill has worked closely with top drivers and engine builders such as the late Peter Manton, in the development of twin S.U. manifolds and conversion parts. His yearly visits to S.U. England since 1960, and the collating of S.U. factory specification and tuning data, has put Midel at the forefront on product range and knowledge amongst S.U. distributors worldwide. With some parts diminishing Midel saw the need to start manufacturing parts of their own. These parts include throttle shafts, spindles, gaskets, jets, metering needles all in house and to exact specifications. Midel has also made some custom SU carburettors for various vehicles. In May 2006 Bill passed away losing his battle with cancer and in turn passed the business onto his two sons Adam & Grant. Both of which have been working for Midel for over 20 years. In January 2007 Midel merged with it’s sister company Fabre, and can now offer an extensive huge range of engine parts and accessories for the classic marques as well it’s range of SU carburettors, parts and accessories. 1992 Daimler DS420 Limousine The last DS420 and the last car with an XK engine The long line of Daimler limousines finally came to an end in 1992 with this car, the last example of the DS420 range. It was also the last car to use the 44-year old Jaguar XK engine design When Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation in 1966, both companies manufactured limousine models, the ageing Daimler Majestic Major and Vanden Plas Princess 4 litre. It was decided to replace both of these older models with a single new limousine, which would bear the Daimler name and would be based on Jaguar components, but which would be assembled in the Vanden Plas factory at Kingsbury in London. The result was the DS420 which was launched in 1968 and co-incidentally became the first new model of the newly-merged British Leyland company. It was based on an extended floorpan from the Jaguar 420G, which made the DS420 the biggest ever British car with unitary body construction. The engine was the well-known Jaguar XK in 4.2 litre form, with an automatic gearbox as standard. The semi- razor edge style of the body was probably inspired by some of the classic Hooper bodies on Daimler chassis The basic bodyshell was supplied by Motor Panels in Coventry and mechanical components were fitted by Jaguar at Browns Lane, before the limousines were sent to Vanden Plas for final assembly and trim. When the Vanden Plas factory closed in 1979, final assembly and trim moved back to a special Limousine Shop in the Jaguar factory at Browns Lane The DS420 enjoyed a near monopoly of its market, and many were also supplied in chassis form for hearse bodywork.

SU FUEL PUMPS +44(0) 1885 488 488 SU Fuel Pumps have always had an arrangement of contact breaker points to switch the current and initiate the pumping action. This is the clicking noise you can hear which tells you that your pump is working. The SU system of points is very reliable and long lasting, but eventually problems can occur with burnt or dirty points. We are still able to supply new pumps to the original ‘pointed’ design which are not polarity conscious, but in addition are also able to supply SU pumps without points. These ‘pointless’ pumps are actuated by means of an electronic switch and a solid state timing control device which overcomes the problems with points and ensures that your pump will work every time, even after a long winter lay-up. The electronic system is patented and the ‘pointless’ pumps are externally identical to their ‘pointed’ counterparts and LIGHTING the characteristic ticking has been retained, so you still know yours is working! In addition we offer DIY Conversion its complete with electronic circuit board and fttings to enable existing pumps to be modifed to electronic actuation SWITCHES if required. • Coastal Classics
CHAIRMAN’S CHAT. Coastal 39s 5d As I sit here writing this, I reflect on this current year of isolation for many and restrictions for others. Its been a year of being able to get those necessary jobs done on the classics for Classics many with the lack of shows. Let’s hope we can see an end to this and hopefully next year be able to get out and about again. Somehow, we will soon have a committee meeting, social distanced of course, to decide on events for next year and to whether the AGM, scheduled for February can go ahead or do we postpone it for a few months. The later looks likely but we shall try to keep you informed of any necessary developments. The same will Covid Car Show apply to our Annual Dinner which was due to take place in January. Should you be wondering why you have not received a reminder about your Membership well its been decided that this will be suspended for this year and hopefully will start again in 2021. For those that have paid this year a free year next year will be given too you. As you can imagine the lack of our two shows has hit us fairly hard so we shall have to postpone our usual donations to charities this year with reluctance I must admit. What more can I say other than keep safe and let’s hope this dreadful virus comes to an end soon so we can get out and about again and back to normality? Your Chairman.
