Image: FreeDigitalPhotos.net 4 Sherwood News and Information Mark Spencer MP Sherwood Update

I have said to you before that for me one of the best bits of being an MP is being able to share Parliament, whether it be with schools and colleges or constituents and charities, and the 3FF, or the Three Faiths Foundation has been another brilliant way to bring voters into Parliament to engage with politics. Each year since I was elected, I have sponsored three students from various religious backgrounds through 3FF who describe themselves as running “education, engagement and action programmes that bring diverse communities together”. The idea isto engage young people early on both in politics and with other young people of different faiths and I’ve found the programme to be extremely positive. I think it’s really important to support organisations and charities like 3FF but I know locally that many smaller groups can struggle through all the red tape that seems to go alongside doing a good deed these days. I’m pleased to see that the Cabinet Office, who are responsible for the voluntary sector, are aware of the problem and I raised the issue of excessive paperwork and of unnecessary CRB checks with the Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd during Question Time last week. Nick Hurd has undertaken to reduce this burdensome paperwork and I hope that will take some of the pressure off; when people are trying to do the right thing and help their communities, it is only fair that Government does its best to support them. Now I would never like it to be said that I don’t pull my weight, and I hope I proved that with my participation in Macmillan Cancer’s Tug-of-War last week where the House of Common’s team pitted their combined tonnage against the House of Lords. I am delighted to say that we enjoyed a magnificent and undisputed victory as well as raising money for a brilliant charity. Any regular readers will know that cancer charities are a cause close to my heart and after losing a close friend to the disease last year, a group of us have decided to cycle from Whitehaven to ’s Bay, coast to coast over a total of 170 miles to raise money for cancer research at the Breast Institute. Various uncharitable comments were made when I announced my intention to friends and family but following a series of rather punishing training sessions (punctuated by the odd pub visit), I hope we’ll be ready to go. If you would like to sponsor me, you can do so through my Just Giving page http:// www.justgiving.com/Mark-Spencer-MP or you can donate £1 by texting “£1 FRWQ64” to 70070.

My surgeries continue to be held on the second Saturday of the month in and the fourth Friday at Dukeries – please ring the office 0115 968 1186 – if you would like to make and appointment. We have all seen James Bond asking the dealer for another “card” and taking the hand. He then smoothly collects his winnings, offers his appreciation to the dealer and walks out of the casino with the admiration of all onlookers.

Although a fictional character, we know Ian Fleming gave Bond intelligence and superior casino experience. So what has this got to do with investing? For many the thought of investing money at the moment is like entering the casino, but you are not James Bond and you probably don’t drive an Aston Martin.

For most keeping their cash where they can see it is the right thing for them, but what about the old saying “Buy Low and Sell High”. Are we not at the “Low” part of that phrase?

In keeping with the James Bond theme, how does he win at the casino? He considers the risk of losing against winning each hand and then bets accordingly. His tolerance is the level of risk he is prepared to take. Someone wanting to invest will be looking to do the same; however, their James Bond will be their fund manager and their tolerance of risk will be personal to them.

So to prevent your investments from being “Shaken and not Stirred”, take investment advice from a professional financial planner and not someone drinking a Vodka Martini.

New gym promotes fitness at The Students at The Joseph Whitaker School will now be able to shape up for summer – as a brand new gym opens its doors! The fantastic new facility officially opened on 18 May, and students who have been inducted are able to use the gym during Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes. Facilities include cross- trainers, rowing and running machines in a spacious, air-conditioned environment. ‘This is a superb new facility for the school which not only enriches the PE curriculum but also aims to encourage a healthy lifestyle for students,’ said Head teacher Rob Martlew. ‘We already have lots of regular visitors to the gym who are enjoying the new facilities.’

Dressed for success! Students from Blidworth Oaks Primary School and The Joseph Whitaker School joined forces in a colourful challenge to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Over three days, the schools worked together to produce a stunning display of art and flowers which will sit proudly in the centre of Blidworth village. The project aimed to follow in the footsteps of the Derbyshire villages whose residents dress their village wells with flowers and mosaics each year – and now the ancient well in Blidworth is festooned with flowers for this special summer.

Year 7 tutor, Miss Street, is pictured right with Elliott Britton, James Seaton, Emily Archer, Elle Calladine and Charlotte Tasker at the finished well-dressing in Blidworth. 7

Councillor Keith Girling of Nottinghamshire County Council Nottinghamshire County Council is one of the first local authorities in the country to return to a committee system and I am pleased to be able to inform you that I have been appointed as the Chairman of the Economic Development Committee which met for the first time on 26 June. The priority for the committee is to support and, where appropriate, lead the development of the local economy. It will do this by ensuring the County Council has a connection with Nottinghamshire businesses, is responsive to local business issues and by working effectively with partners in both the private and public sectors. Nottinghamshire County Council is already actively:  Involved in the D2N2 LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) particularly in the development of the Nottinghamshire Enterprise Zone  helping people to find work through the development of a network of work clubs across the county  supporting apprenticeships  developing the Local Broadband Plan to ensure all residents and businesses have access to superfast broadband  further developing our three innovation centres to provide excellent office accommodation and business support for new innovative businesses  looking at ways to enable businesses to access funding to enable them to grow  listening to local businesses to understand any barriers to growth  attracting investment to Nottinghamshire by working with the Invest in Nottingham team  promoting Nottinghamshire as a place to visit by supporting the work of Experience Nottinghamshire  working to ensure local businesses have an opportunity to secure business from the County Council and are well placed to do business with each other

To further develop this work we are currently developing a Growth Plan ‘Nottinghamshire: the Place to Do Business’ for the county for 2012-2025. It will focus on infrastructure development, competitive business growth, aspiration and talent (education and skills) and reputation and promotion. We will be working closely with the business community and local partners in the development of the plan.

Signing on the dotted line… Why a written contract should be at the heart of your business

Entrepreneurialism is very much alive and kicking in the today. It’s estimated that 2011 saw 20% more ‘start-up’ businesses than in 2010, and 2012 will continue to see a surge in people wanting to start their own companies and be their own boss. Jeremy Blatherwick, commercial lawyer at Tallents in Newark, considers one often-overlooked area vital to secure future business success - formal written contracts for business partners, suppliers and customers.

Jeremy says: “Setting up a business can be both exciting and nerve wracking in equal measures. Recently we’ve seen a surge in family members, friends and former work colleagues deciding to set up in business together which is a great way to try and shake off the current doom and gloom of the UK economy. “However, while all may be rosy now, sensible business owners will look to secure the future of their companies with formal written contracts.”

Jeremy continues: “Depending on the business need, the written contract may take several forms: partnership deed, shareholder agreements, contracts of employment, terms and conditions for sale, etc. An experienced commercial lawyer will be able to advise on the best written contract suited to your needs.”

But what are the potential consequences of not having formal written contracts? Jeremy explains: “Without a partnership deed the business will be governed by the Partnership Act of 1890. Unfortunately, this piece of legislation was drafted well over 100 years ago and often will not meet the needs of today’s business partnerships. “Anyone going into business together should set out the formalities of their business partnership, such as: obligations and responsibilities, rights and benefits, or what happens if one partner wants to leave the business.”

When dealing with suppliers, clients and customers, a written contract will protect your rights, ensure you get paid or receive the services or goods you have paid for, and will limit the commercial risks of doing business.

Jeremy comments: “It’s a common misconception that some people think that a formal contract only exists if it has been written down. In reality a contract can be made orally, or be proven by your dealings (on the phone, via email, sending text messages etc.) with your customer or supplier. Just because you haven’t signed a written agreement doesn’t mean there isn’t still a formal contract in place.”

Given the current financial climate, it may well be the start-up pioneers and entrepreneurs of Britain who will help to pull our economy out of the doldrums. Any sensible business-owner can protect their business with experienced legal advice.

Jeremy continues, “Our experienced commercial litigation team can help any start-up business get off to a flying start by advising on their legal rights, responsibilities and obligations. Let Tallents help you secure your business’s future.” Tallents Solicitors, www.tallents.co.uk

WARNING TO LOCAL BUSINESSES AFTER FIRE SAFETY PROSECUTIONS Business owners are being advised to pay greater attention to fire safety legislation following the prosecution of a national retailer at Mansfield Magistrates Court yesterday (30 May). A local retailer recently faced a total financial penalty of £32,984.17 including a victim sur- charge and full costs after pleading guilty to six fire safety offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Fire Protection officers from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service had visited the retailer in Mansfield in June 2011 and found that the fire precautions which should have been provided in the event of a fire were inadequate. This presented a seri- ous risk to the lives of customers and staff, so an Enforcement Notice was issued which required the deficiencies to be reme- died. When Fire Protection officers re-visited the premises in October 2011 they discovered that several breaches had been repeated, including the locking of fire exits. Today, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding all owners and occupiers of buildings of their legal responsibility to protect their customers and staff against the risk of fire and warning them that, where necessary, action will be taken against anyone found to be in breach of fire safety regulations. Ian Taylor, Fire Protection Group Manager at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We are here to provide advice and support to local businesses and are always willing to help to make sure they comply with the fire safety legislation. Howev- er, the public should continue to be reassured that we take any breaches of fire safety very seriously and will use legal sanc- tions where necessary." “In this case, my officers had previously spent some time ensuring that the retailer was aware of its responsibilities and duties to ensure people’s safety, and it is disappointing that they chose to continue to place people at risk from fire”. Further fire safety advice and guidance for all types of premises is available at www.communities.gov.uk/fire/firesafety/ firesafetylaw / and www.notts-fire.gov.uk .Help regarding fire safety in non-domestic premises is available from Nottingham- shire Fire and Rescue Service fire safety advice line, on 0115 957 5231 or email [email protected] . 20

The Bards at Blidworth Heavy Rain

This year, it is looking as though we have to catch hold of sunny days and treasure them.- I hold my Fields flooded, far out breath! along limitless, horizon, The weather can switch from sweltering to floods and cold all in a day as we have seen! No wonder that merge with flowing surge, the seasons and the weather provide so much material to wax lyrical about. waves in crescendo, Arthur Radford and George Wilcockson in the Bards group, seem to be our specialists on the subject. washing roadside grime, spoiling plunder If you are ever at a loss for conversation - refer to the weather! for scavengers. I met the late Ted Hughes at Writers Week in Listowel across the water, in County Kerry. A tall man, he read his poems with a gentle intensity. He captures the fierce power of the wind in the poem of the same Sheep bleat, forlorn, name:- “Wind” an excerpt below. nestle together for warmth, turning backs This house has been far out at sea all night, on wind and weather, resigned, mournfully indifferent. The woods crashing through darkness, the booming hills, Winds stampeding the fields under the window Bloated crops bruised, bent, Floundering black astride and blinding wet …. etc yield sacrificially to the greater strength, Every word seems to revel in the strength of the wind's power and how we can feel powerless in the face unrelenting, suspending harvest. of it. A poem about the weather in a completely different style is by Michael Flanders of Flanders and Swann fame:- “A Song of the Weather” an excerpt below. Humus thickly layered by ancient cycle, …...June just rains and never stops conduit transporting precious liquor, Thirty days and spoils the crops deep in the bowels of earth’s storehouse. In July the sun is hot Is it shining? No, it's not...etc © Jan Bebbington

Can it really be that we are facing drought and hosepipe bans? Our farmers wrestle so much with the weather and all of its ramifications while many of us are a step away from being in real communication with our little patches of the earth. Life in all of its forms is worth celebrating and respecting and poems are worth writing in whatever style befits the writer. Christine Michael, http://www.christinemichael.org/bardsatblidworth 26
