Baltimore rookie Watkins pitches Orioles to 6-1 win vs Rays ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rookie right-hander Spenser Watkins gave up one run in six innings as the Baltimore Orioles tied a season high with their third consecutive win, 6-1 over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. The 28-year old Watkins, making his third start and fourth career appearance, scattered four hits, walked two and struck out seven. His ERA dropped from 1.74 to 1.65 (three earned runs over 16 1/3 innings). Watkins (2-0) was signed as a minor league free agent in February after not pitching in 2020 and spending 2014-19 in the Detroit organization. He had considered taking a high school freshman team coaching job in Arizona before signing with Baltimore. It’s the fifth three-game winning streak for the Orioles, who have an AL-worst record of 31-62. Cole Sulser, Paul Fry and Tyler Wells completed the five- hitter. Baltimore entered 0-6 against the Rays this season, getting outscored 48-21. Tampa Bay All-Star catcher Mike Zunino exited after three innings with left hip flexor tightness. Designated hitter Yandy Diaz departed after five innings due to neck spasms. The Rays (55-39) are 8-3 since July 4. Ryan Mountcastle flared an RBI double down the right field line and Anthony Santander hit a sacrifice fly as the Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the first. Pat Valaika had a two-out, two-run single during a four-run sixth that made it 6-0.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings October 31, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1938 - Ernie Lombardi is named the National League Most Valuable Player, following his batting championship season. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Reds Insider: John Fay says farewell By John Fay / Cincinnati Enquirer / [email protected] / @johnfayman Thanks. Thanks for reading. Thanks for agreeing. Thanks for disagreeing. This will be my final story for the Enquirer. It’s the last of thousands. I walked into the old Enquirer building in September of 1975. I had just started school at the University of Dayton. I was hired as part of the crew that took football scores. The Enquirer sports department at the time was populated by an odd mix of characters. You knew you were in a newspaper from the sound of the AP ticker. To be heard above the clatter, you had to talk loud. Bill Ford and Dick Forbes, World War II vets who to went school on the GI Bill, were colorful guys who used colorful language. Bob Hertzel was the Reds' beat writer. I was amazed by how much copy he could crank out so quickly — and so well. They and the others formed an interesting bunch. It was pretty clear that they had a lot of fun working. I thought: Man, this is what I want to do. And so it began. I’ve covered just about every sports beat in the city over the years. The last 15 or so as the Reds' beat writer have been the most rewarding and interesting. I think a large part of that has been because of the connection I’ve developed with you — the readers — through social media.

  • How Baseball's Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers
How Baseball’s Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers Ivan Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pittsburgh Pirates under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage. By: Jared Diamond- The Wall Street Journal Pittsburgh In today’s data-driven, power-centric version of baseball, starting pitchers tend to follow a similar formula: They throw as hard as they can for as long as they can, racking up strikeouts until they reach the 100-pitch mark, usually around the sixth inning or so. The days of one man owning the mound for 27 outs ended long ago. But it seems Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova never received that message. Upon arriving here in a trade with the New York Yankees last August, he has emerged as the ultimate throwback, dominating opposing lineups in a manner hardly seen for decades. In his first 15 outings for Pittsburgh, Nova completed four, more than anyone else during that span. Even more improbable, in 91 2/3 innings of work, he has issued just four total walks. That means when Nova pitches, he is equally likely to go the distance as he is to miss the strike zone four times to a given batter. “A lot of guys like to strike out everybody,” said Nova, who is scheduled to start Saturday night in Miami. “I like seeing all those ground balls and quick outs. It makes me more happy than getting 10 strikeouts.” Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pirates, who, under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage, have reached the playoffs in three of the past four years.
