Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Skojarzenia bywają różne, jednak nie ulega wątpliwości, że po dziś dzień Skandynawia łączona jest z wikińskim dziedzictwem jej wczesnośredniowiecznych mieszkańców. Jednym z najważniejszych aspektów kultury Normanów pozostaje ich sztuka wojenna oraz barwna mitologia, szczęśliwie w dużej mierze ocalała, dzięki islandzkim skrybom. Historia ludzi Północy i ich wierzenia z epoki wikingów inspirują kolejne generacje pisarzy fantasy, twórców filmowych, producentów gier i, przede wszystkim, muzyków sceny metalowej. W niniejszym artykule chciałabym pokrótce poruszyć temat wykorzystywania wątków związanych z kulturą wikingów przez wykonawców metalu1. Muzyka metalowa to oczywiście nader pojemny termin. Choć sam metal jest częścią szerszego stylu – rocka, możemy w nim wydzielić kilkadziesiąt podgatunków, pomiędzy którymi często nie da się zarysować jasnych granic. Jednak metal ma pewien specyficzny dźwięk, instrumentację, dzięki czemu możemy mówić o nim jako o odrębnym gatunku muzycznym. Klasycznymi instrumentami używanymi przez grupy metalowe pozostają gitara elektryczna, gitara basowa oraz perkusja. Wiele zespołów jako standardowe wyposażenie wykorzystuje ponadto keyboard, a okazjonalnie używane bywają także skrzypce, flety i inne zasadniczo nietypowe dla rocka instrumenty, jak chociażby organy. Charakterystyczny wokal to także cecha dystynktywna metalu. Magic-Circle-Festival 2008 in Bad Arolsen 9.-12.7.2008 Das SRND360 verfügt über 3 abgestimmte rechteckige Doppelmembrankapseln mit Nieren-Charakteristik und ein externes Verstärkerteil mit 6 Ausgängen für den direkten Abgriff der 5.0 / 5.1 / 6.0-Surround–Formate. B&R Medientechnik aus Kürten zeichnete sich für den Livemitschnitt verantwortlich. Das gesamte Festival wurde mit 2 Recording-Mobiles mitgeschnitten die vor allem auch für Surround-Recording ausgelegt sind und einige Bands nutzten diese einmalige Gelegenheit für einen Livemitschnitt in echter Surroundtechnik. Während vier Tagen traten in Bad Arolsen Metal Bands aus der ganzen Welt auf: MANOWAR, Alice Cooper, Whitesnake, Ted Nugent, Def Leppard, WASP, Doro, Gotthard, MSG Michael Schenker Group, HolyHell, Stormwarrior und Kobus… Nach dem grossen Erfolg des ersten Magic Circle Festivals 2007, entschloss sich MANOWAR Mastermind Joey De Maio , an 2 Abenden mir seiner Band aufzutreten und Ihre sechs ersten Alben komplett live zu spielen. Zum Jubiläum der 20jährigen Veröffentlichung des MANOWAR Albums “Kings Of Metal” wurde der gesamte Liveauftritt aufgezeichnet und zudem von einem klassischen Chor und Orchester begleitet. Dieser Livemitschnitt in true surround wird demnächst auch als DVD erhältlich sein. Über 35000 Besucher waren während der 4Tage auf diesem Festival der Superlative und erlebten die Liveperformance mit Pyro-, Light-Shows auf der riesigen 40 Meter-Bühne. Das MILAB SRND 360 wurde auf 5 Metern Höhe frei hängend, am 3-stöckigen FOH-Tower befestigt. Mit einem eigens dafür gefertigten Windschutz für den Ausseneinsatz bestückt, überzeugte das SRND 360 mit gleich bleibend hoher Übertragungsqualität ohne störende Windgeräusche .

Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc.

Introduction The presence of Greek Mythology in so called “popular” music is far more significant and frequent than one could suppose. A few interesting examples of this phenomenon can be found in some songs and ballads of the Sixties, albeit in that period the references to Greek gods, heroes and heroines seem to be incidental, loose and sometimes even ironical. As for instance, in Lee Hazlewood’s Some velvet morning (1967), the mention of Phaedra is due more to the fascinating sound of the name itself than to the suggestion of Euripides’ tragedy1. A very different case is Aphrodite Mass by The Fugs2, a humorous and intentionally provocative American band formed in 1965 by the poets Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg (Figure 1). The most surprising and amazing part of this bizarre song consists in a musical adaptation of Sappho’s Ode to Aphrodite: the lyrics faithfully reproduce the original Greek text, the words are spelled with a correct Erasmian pronunciation and the rhythm is the one of a Sapphic stanza: never- theless, the intent of the whole operation is openly desecrating and parodistic.
