Infrastructure Funding Modernization: Another priority issue for Commerce Lexington is modernizing the way Kentucky generates funding for critical infrastructure projects and how funds are allocated to areas with greater populations. Recently identified needs totaled more than $900 million for road maintenance and other projects, $619 million for one-time mega projects including the Brent Spence Bridge in Northern Kentucky and the I-69 project in West Kentucky, and $35 million for other modes like transit, air and rail. State Representative Sal Santoro has been a long- time champion for modernization to the way the state collects revenues to pay for infrastructure improvements, and is expected to lead again in advocating for legislation that includes an in - crease in the state’s gas tax and other permitting fee updates to improve public safety, connectivity and economic development opportunities.

Real Travel ID: Governor Andy Beshear and Transportation Sec - retary Jim Gray have outlined plans to open re - gional centers across the state to make it easier for Kentuckians to obtain Voluntary Travel ID’s (REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses). On Octo - ber 1, 2020, standard driver’s licenses will no longer meet federal REAL ID Act requirements for Kentuckians to board U.S. domestic flights or enter select federal facilities. Voluntary Travel ID cards are optional, and citizens do not have to ob - tain one before the deadline. Other federally ap - proved documents, like a valid passport or passport card, are accepted for air travel. Right now, residents of Fayette County may apply for a Voluntary Travel ID at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in Frankfort. A regional office is expected to open in Lexington in the months ahead.
