2005-2006 USC Swimming and Diving 1 2005-2006 Swimming and Diving Outlook

USC Men’s Swimming Preview Larsen Jensen If asked to form an international swimming all-star team, 22-and- under, you probably couldn’t do much better than to just choose the USC men’s swimming team rather than pick from the world’s rosters. Dense with talent and languages, USC’s pool will feature swimmers on the men’s side born in Hungary, , , South Korea, Guatemala as well as the U.S. The men finished ninth at the 2005 NCAA Championships, the 10th time in 13 years that USC posted a top 10 finish at the NCAAs under head coach Mark Schubert. Senior Ous Mellouli (Tunisia) won his first career NCAA title (400y IM), as did American Larsen Jensen (1650y free). Mellouli also won Pac-10 titles in the 400 IM and the 500y free, leading USC to a third-place finish in an always-tough Pac-10 Conference. Schubert only lost two members of his 2005 NCAA contingent, saying “Ous is one of world’s finest middle freestylers and IM swimmers,” said goodbye to captain and breaststroke specialist Paul Fahey as well as All- Schubert of the Tunisian born swimmer who won a pair of bronze medals at American diver Ray Vincent. the 2005 World Championships. “He showed spectacular improvement at This year’s men’s team is led by Mellouli and juniors Jensen and the worlds in the middle distances and continues his consistent elite status Mihaly Flaskay, who between them can dominate distance freestyle, medley in the 400 IM.” and breaststroke events. In addition to Mellouli’s potential dominance of Jensen won two silver medals at the 2005 Worlds, taking second to the 400y IM and 500y free and Jensen’s vice grip on the mile, Flaskay is in Australian giant Grant Hackett in both the 800m and 1500m free. elite company in the 100y breast, taking second last year at the NCAAs. “Larsen continued his stellar international career at the world championships, breaking his American record in the 800m free,” Schubert said. “He’s an NCAA champion who’s working hard to develop a third event for the NCAAs to match the 500y and 1650y.” Ous Mellouli Flaskay, a three-time All-American, missed winning an NCAA title in the 100y breast by a hair, but still set the school record in the race. Said Schubert: “Mihaly is one of the world’s top sprint breaststrokers and gives us outstanding depth on the sprint relays.” Another pair of All-Americans who Schubert thinks will build on their fine 2005 seasons is juniors Sam Masson and Viktor Bodrogi. They both earned All-American honors on USC’s NCAA championship final medley relays, Bodrogi swimming the back and Masson the fly. Masson also scored individually in the 100y fly. Said Schubert: “Sam is one of our most versatile swimmers. He’s the most dependable relay swimmer we have with ability in the sprint free, fly and back. He has the potential to be a multi-event finalist at the NCAAs. “Viktor is improving to become a fine short course swimmer. He can swim the back, fly, IM and free and is a great weapon in dual meets because of his ability to swim any stroke and distance.” Another junior who came into his own in 2005 is Sean Sussex, an All-American on USC’s 200y medley relay who is one of USC’s fastest ever sprint freestylers. Said Schubert: “Sean is a top sprinter and a great dual- meet weapon. He performs at his best in the championship season, particularly on relays. He has the potential to be an NCAA finalist and should challenge school records in the 100 and 200 free.”

2 2005-2006 USC Swimming and Diving 2005-2006 Swimming and Diving Outlook

Seniors Tyler Storie and Tyler Panos will serve as co-captains for the Trojans and both will are key members of USC’s freestyle corps. Kalyn Keller Storie is one of USC’s top distance swimmers while Panos has improved at the shorter distances. Said Schubert: “Tyler Storie will again be part of a great distance group and should qualify for his first NCAA Championships as a senior. Tyler Panos, a previous NCAA qualifier, has been a great point scorer at the Pac-10 level and should be one of our best relay swimmers in the 50y, 100y and 200y free.” Among the other returning freestylers who should post major contributions are sophomores William Antisdale, Tyler Wilson and Bryce Elser and senior Mike Kauffman. Wilson and Elser are sprinters and Antisdale and Kauffman are distance swimmers. All should be keys this year. Said Schubert: “William is one of our best distance freestylers and has really benefited from training with Larsen and Ous. He has potential to qualify and score in his first NCAAs. “Tyler adds depth to the sprint corps and should be a top relay man on the 200y and USC Women’s Swimming Preview 400y free relay. Bryce is coming off a fine freshman year and will be a contender to qualify for our free relays. Mark Schubert’s women’s squad features a huge incoming class of “Besides being strong in the 500y and 1650y free, Mike can be newcomers that should mesh with the returning talent to form one of the counted on in the medley and the 200 fly. Vazhenin, an NCAA veteran, is a versatile swimmer who can help in many strokes while Connealy is another threat across the board. Said Schubert: “Cait was a consistent winner in dual meets last year and I expect the same. She can swim the fly and free at all distances and is a key relay swimmer. “Stacy is a solid big-meet swimmer. She will focus on her freestyle, IM and the 200y back. She should be a contender to be on the 800y free relay.” Goetsch had an impressive freshman campaign as a flyer and middle distance freestyler in 2005. In addition to her relay work, Goetsch scored
