FIRST READING | 60: 1-6

RESPONSORIAL PSALM | Psalm 72: Lord, Every Nation on Earth Marty Haugen

1. O God give your judgment to the king, to a king’s son your justice, that he may judge your people in justice, and your poor in right judgment.

2. In his days shall justice flourish, and great peace till the moon is no more. He shall rule from sea to sea, from the River to the bounds of the earth.

3. The kings of Tarshish and the islands shall pay him tribute. The kings of Sheba and Seba shall bring him gifts. Before him all kings shall fall prostrate, all nations shall serve him.

4. For he shall save the needy when they cry, the poor, and those who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and the needy, and save the lives of the needy.

A NEW YEAR’S PRAYER FOR

NEARLY EVERYONE By JAMES MARTIN, S.J.

If you have time today, why not do an annual “examen”? St. financial problems, family problems, work problems. So ask Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, encouraged us to God for help. Be specific about what you need. St. Ignatius do a daily “examen,” or “examination of conscience,” where often encouraged people to pray for what they want and need. we look back over the day to see where God has been active. Finally, ask for the grace to see God’s presence in the new year. It’s a way to help us notice, be grateful and experience the desire for change. And throw in a prayer for me. I need help too.

You can do it for a whole year too, and Dec. 31 is the perfect Happy New Year! time. Here’s how. Give yourself some time, maybe 30 minutes or so. Or longer if it’s been an eventful year. ~ The Rev. James Martin, S.J., is a Jesuit priest, author and editor at large at America. 1.) Remember that you’re in God’s presence. That’s essential for any prayer. It’s not just you running through a list or talking to yourself. You’re doing it with God. Ignatius used to recommend actually looking at the physical place where you’ll be praying (a chair, on the floor, in a pew) and imagine God looking at you. 14 SAINT CECILIA PARISH NOTICE THE SIMILARITIES?

In his essay, "Cauchetier's Christmas Card: Adoration of the Magi," American cinematographer John Bailey writes, "Im- ages of the Magi first appeared in Christian art in the fourth century as catacomb paintings and on sarcophagi reliefs. They were at first represented in Eastern dress: distant visi- tors come to give tribute to the new king of the West. The visit of the Three Kings quickly became a central motif in Christian iconography, foretelling the triumph of this new religion. [Here] is this much-loved, oft-reproduced sculp- ture from Autun, of the Sleeping Magi. Such an intensely horizontal image is rare in Romanesque iconography and its lateral line is even more focused by the wing and pointed hand of the angel. The sweeping incisions defining the blan- ket also contribute to the strong left to right movement. Whether the angel is waking the sleeping kings to tell them to follow the star above them to the stable or to warn them on their return home not to report back to King Herod—has The Magi look charmingly cozy in their communal bed; it long been debated by scholars. Any guesses?" was common practice for travelers to share beds in the Middle Ages. (Leaving one's crown on in bed was probably not quite so common.) The top photograph shows the ori- gin of the other two works of art. 12th-century French Ro- manesque sculptor, Gislebertus, carved the top image out of stone for one of the four major capitals at Autun Cathe- dral in Burgundy. Left above is a cut paper design by Bene- dictine Brother Martin Erspamer, a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad, Indiana who is inspired by stone carvings in Romanesque churches in and Spain, that, in turn, borrow from Byzantine iconography. Just beneath it on the left is a painting by the Chinese artist, He Qi, who has committed himself to the creation of modern Chinese Christian art since 1983. Dr. He Qi was the first among Main- land Chinese to earn Ph.D. in religious art after the Cultural Revolution.

THE WORK OF CHRISTMAS Howard Thurman When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among the people, to make music in the heart.
