Women On Target – April Clinic Update

Once again we were lucky and had great weather for the month of April. Out of the 58 surveys collected at the end of the day the results were fantastic. Every single survey complimented the club and the instructors on being of the highest professional standards. There were a few bumps here and there in the morning; but, as usual, Multi-Lakers solved the problems early on; stepping forward when needed. A special thanks to the pistol guys for that effort.

On behalf of the Women On Target program, I would like to thank the following for all of their help: Archery – Ron Amans, Greg Fishaw, Ken Hamann, Tim Loynes, Dave Wedge & Brian Whittle. Muzzeloading - Ron Davis & Tom Keller. Pistol – Don Boka, Bill Brennecke, Ron Chandler, George Rhodes, Stacey Swanderski & Frank Zoch. Rifle – Mike Borst, Ron Cochran, Ed Morgan & Mike Williams. Shotgun – Marc Bohn, Bob Ray, Bill Boeckle, Chet Hendrickson & Jim Hilligoss.

Behind the scenes – Bob & Geri Boehme, Marti Murdock & Rocky Kittinger. We also appreciated the 4 junior shotgun members that showed up to help wherever needed. It is nice to have young backs & legs around when you need them.

A special thanks to Caribou Coffee and Jessica Manning for supplying all of the coffee and discount coupons. Thanks also to Sportsmen’s Warehouse for the $10.00 discount coupons for the entire clinic; several door prizes. Eight store employees participated in the event as well.

Death Notices ~ Bob Bauman Our sincere sympathy goes out to the families of: Bob Herbert, who passed on May 5th, 2008 Robert G. Wilson, who passed away on April 15th, 2008 16 God Bless and may they rest in peace. June: Late Spring and Summer Work By Marty Zaremba June is a month for roses. Watch now for harmful pests, and spray or use rose dust regularly to keep them under control. The heavy spring work is over. The annual and vegetable gardens have already been planted, but additional plantings of some kinds, such as beans and beets can be made. There should be time to trim the edges of the beds, stake and tie tall plants that need support against the wind, and still have time for other chores. Most annuals and other bedding plants should be set out the second week of June. Plant sweet corn, cucumbers and pumpkins for Halloween. Tulip bulbs will be ready to dig up by the end of June. June is hot. This encourages the formation of many lateral bulbs rather than large central ones. Now that the weather is warm and somewhat settled, the house plants can be taken outside to the decks. Put them in the sun or shade according to their needs. Fertilize regularly or repot when needed. Remember to have someone cover for you, if you leave for vacation. If you only leave for a long weekend, be sure to water thoroughly and weed before you leave. If it has been cool and overcast, the hot sun will now wilt many plants. The wilting does not necessarily mean a lack of water; it means the water is leaving the plants faster than it is being replaced. Soft leaves lose water too fast. When they harden up, check the soil moisture. If moist, do not water, you could cause a mildew problem. Try to keep the weeds out of the garden. In rain or heavy watering, weeds will appear as by some kind of magic. Rabbits are always a problem. They can cause a lot of damage to plants and early vegetables that are developing. A good fence or a good dog is all that I can recommend for help with the rabbits. If you start to notice holes in leaves, try to determine what is causing the damage. Seven will stop earwigs and most other insects. Insecticidal soap will control mites and aphids. The lawn may start to look bad, but it is not a cause for concern. Our cool season grasses like moderate temperatures and it is now hot. Don’t worry; the lawn will soon green up again. Shrubs and hedges have made most of their growth by the end of June. The third week of June would be a good time to prune or shear them. By the end of June they will have grown enough to hide the holes made by pruning. Hedges of privet or yew could be sheared a second time. Most shrubs that bloom before the end of June could have some branches removed after they have finished blooming. This type of pruning provides spaces for light and air to enter the plant. It also encourages new growth and flowers for next year. Don’t go crazy with the hedge shears. Usually you shear one side of a hedge and the other side is now higher. The natural instinct is to go back and shear the other side again. If you don’t resist this temptation, there may not be too much of the hedge left. June is a good time to propagate with softwood cuttings. Try azalea, bayberry, boxwood, forsythia, hydrangea, spirea, and virburnum. Softwood cuttings are those taken in the growing season before the growth is finished for the year. Cut the end of a branch-let about six to eight inches long. Leave three to five leaves on the wood. Dip the cut ends into a root growth hormone such as indubutaletic acid. Knock off excess hormone, as a little goes a long way. Plant in a pot filled with sandy loam and sphagnum peat moss. Don’t forget to put a few rocks in the bottom of the pots for drainage. Put about four or five cuttings per pot, water thoroughly and keep them in a shady area. Air laying is my favorite way to propagate new plants. Make a slit in the stem at a point where it is desired that roots should form. Hold the slit open with a toothpick or spent match. Insert the toothpick in the slit, wrap the wound with a handful of sphagnum moss and cover it with waxed paper or poly material. Leave the top open so that water can be added to keep the moss moist. In two or three months the moss will be filled with roots and ready to be cut off the parent plant and planted. It’s always a good way to get the difficult to find white flowering plants. Trees can be planted in June, but be careful to check the soil moisture. Don’t let the roots dry out. In June, most folks spend more time outdoors. More time sitting under shade trees. Now they notice that leaves have holes. They notice that some have red or brown spots, and the ground is littered with what looks like good leaves. Holes in leaves can be okay. Red spots are probably insect eggs and are not a problem in low numbers. Brown spots are probably caused by an anthracnose fungus and have already done their damage. The ground littered with good leaves may be caused by a few different causes. The tree’s root system cannot support so many leaves, and the tree is just making an adjustment to the canopy. The squirrels cause most of the leaf drop. They are gathering material for their nests and are very messy. See you when the wind shifts! ~ Marty Zaremba 17 Fueling your passion for the great outdoors.

Bourbeau helping your club & not making Rick Bryant some fat cat rich! Hello Everyone,

I need to ask for some help and tell you of some upcoming events. Good Old Days is coming up and I need some help with the kids’ games. If anyone could help me out, I am doing two hour shifts at the different games. Some of the games are the milk jug, balloon break, coloring game, fish bowls, kids’ tent, and more. So you can see, it’s going to be a fun filled day.

Additionally, if anyone has some 4 X 8 sheets of plywood or 2 X 4’s that can be donated for use as backstops for the games, it would be greatly appreciated. These items can be returned after the event if so desired. Please mark accordingly.

Now, I want to tell you we are playing Euchre every other Monday evening. I hope some of you can make it out to play. We have a fantastic time. If you would like more information, please call the bar @ (248) 363-9109. The next scheduled nights are June 2nd, 16th & 30th.

We also have two casino trips planned. The first trip is on Sunday September 21st going to Greek Town. The price is $25.00 per person which will earn you $25.00 back at the casino. The second trip is to the Sault on February 27th to March 1st, 2009. This may seem early but we are taking deposits now for the Sault. The price is $400.00 per room, double occupancy. You get $40.00 cash, $20.00 gold tokens, two buffet breakfasts, two buffet dinners back per person. Beer, pop and water will also be available on the bus. Deposits of $100.00 are being taken now and payments of $100.00 increments or payment in full will be accepted. *** NO REFUNDS on any funds received. If you are unable to make the trip, it is your responsibility to locate a replacement. A waiting list may be available.

I hope to see you participate and enjoy one or both of these fine events.
