North Shore confounded their most serious critics by kicking their way into the 1980 SF L-Escort Grand Final, in defeating Newtown by 10 points in the Preliminary Final played at Erskineville Oval last Sunday. Newtown staged a miraculous recovery to level at the 16th minute of the last quarter, but their moment of glory and hopes were short-lived only a minute later when Pitura for the AVCO Bears was freed in the goal-square at the other end, for him to kick North's 10th and most telling goal. The 1980 season will certainly be recorded as the most dramatic in One Hundred Years of competition football in Sydney. Compared with brooms of the past that swept away cobwebs, Australian Football in Sydney has been hit with a blast akin to that from a nuclear bomb. There are so many high points to 1980 that it's difficult to recall them all, even as close as one may have been to most of the fall out. Some may judge that things are now moving ahead too Comings and goings sometimes resembled the plot of a quickly; that we're stealing a lot of organisational skill bedroom farce as Sydney footy went thru the birth from the VFL. The game was watched by 24,545 who paid $59,593 at the gate. The match was won by Carlton 20.11-131 to Essendon 13.16-94, but the real winner was Australian Football. Possibly KEN HOPPER in the "Daily Telegraph" of Monday, May 26 said it better - "Eat your heart out rugby league - after yesterday's champagne VFL match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Aussie Rules is here to stay". The VFL will return to Sydney in 1981, with two AFC-ESCORT CUP matches expected to be played under lights at the SCG, possibly on Saturday nights, plus two day matches during the season. ~t:::::=-h m IN THE GOALS RUSCUKLIC, Peter (East Sydney) . 147 Reserves Grand Final SPENCER, Jock (Newtown) ......
