Day 2 of the trip saw the Bishop, Wendy and the two Johns (Kiddle and Whittaker) visiting Cyrene Chapel (right) and Farm, where the effects of climate change and economic problems could be clearly seen. The farm can no longer grow the crops that helped to feed local pupils, as the bore hole no longer produces enough water. For the moment, the farm workers continue to raise pigs and chickens, although with the ever increasing cost of feed this may not last long.

The climax of the visit was the Shearly Cripps Festival, celebrating the missionary who lived and worked alongside the Shona people in the early 20th century. The celebration begins with Evening Prayer on the Friday, after which the pilgrims camp around the shrine until Sunday. The Southwark group arrived on Saturday in time to take part in the Festival Mass at 8.00am, with Bishop Christopher helping to lead the service (left). After the service it was time for the traditional choir competition — although fewer than usual were able to enter, because fuel shortages meant that people found it difficult to travel.
