Sculpted in aluminium by Geoffrey Clarke, it was cast using pioneer techniques which he himself developed. Sadly Geoffrey Clarke died four years ago and since then a lot has been written about his work, which can be found all over the country. DP DT P PDA T BAMFORD CHAPEL AND NORDEN URC Norden Road, Bamford, Rochdale, Greater Manchester, OL11 5PQ Bamford Chapel has been at the heart of the local community for over 200 years. Come and find out what was taking place here 200 years ago, in 1819, and 100 years ago in 1919. You will gain a fascinating insight into our local heritage. Bamford Chapel and Norden URC have worked hard in recent years to preserve and present a fabulous archive. This has been helped by the chapel receiving a Heritage Lottery Grant. Come and see the progress made and the plans to continue to make our heritage more accessible. Maybe you would like to get involved? Everyone is welcome. You do not have to be a church member to help us in this work. Our archive includes records of births, deaths and marriages and original books of minutes going back to the Chapel’s founding in 1801. These provide a fascinating insight into the lives of local people over a Saturday 14 September: 10am-4pm significant period of time. You will also have the opportunity to L P T find out about the many services, activities and events taking place here. 3 HORSE CARRS Shawclough Road, Rochdale, Greater Manchester, OL12 6LG Horse Carrs, built in 1865 celebrates its 154th featuring a 6ft diorama of a 1950’s/60’s Holiday year. Originally built as the family home of the Camp - “Hi-De-Hi”. Silk Mill Manufacturer, Thomas Watson,who was also a benefactor to the town of Rochdale. Thursday 19 September: 10:30am-4pm Visit the building and talk to our historian Friday 20 September: 10:30am-4pm about the history of the Watson family and Saturday 21 September: 1pm-4pm the building. View the pictorial history of the Sunday 22 September: 1pm-4pm building to current date and enjoy a PowerPoint presentation of the Watson Family, in addition to BOOKING NOT NECESSARY various items of related archival material. The Exhibition also includes an Archival Display featuring Miss Frances Marion Watson who was a Missionary to China from West Street Baptist Church, Rochdale and an overview of the History of the West Street Baptist Church (the 1st Baptist Church in Rochdale), which is now known as ‘Open Door’ and resides within Horse Carrs. There will also be a Dolls House Display exhibited by the Whibleys Dolls House Club LITTLEBOROUGH HISTORY CENTRE Littleborough Station, Platform 2, Station Buildings, Railway Street, Littleborough, Greater Manchester, OL15 8AF Littleborough Archaeological and Historical Society will host the event this year. This heritage centre is based in the original station buildings on the platform of Littleborough Station. For Heritage Open Days, the centre is holding an ongoing exhibition on the fallen Saturday 14 September: 11am-4pm soldiers from Littleborough during WWI. Sunday 15 September: 12noon-3pm There is an extensive archive with numerous Saturday 21 September: 11am - 4pm photographs and research facilities too. Sunday 22 September: 12noon - 3pm BOOKING NOT NECESSARY D DP P T 4 LOCAL STUDIES CENTRE, TOUCHSTONES ROCHDALE The Esplanade, Rochdale OL16 1AQ Call into the Local Studies Centre to gain an insight into what effect ‘People Power’ had on the local area. In this year of commemoration, we will be exploring the three themes of Peterloo; Protest, Democracy and Freedom, through a series of displays in the centre. Pick up a quiz sheet and one lucky winner will receive a copy of the book ‘Sam Bamford: Portrait of a Radical’ by local author Morris Garratt. Then, why not explore the Museum, Art Gallery, Visitor Information Centre & gift shop, followed by a visit to the Art Café for light Friday 13 September: 10am-5pm refreshments. Long Street Methodist Church and Schools were built in 1899 by the foremost Arts and Crafts architect in the north of England, Edgar Wood, who was described by Pevsner as ‘that remarkable...Manchester architect’. It is an outstanding Grade II* listed building incorporating Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and modern stylistic elements into a magnificent whole. Come and see the wonderful objects in storage at the Arts and Heritage Resource Centre and take a tour with Sarah Hodgkinson, who looks after the museum collection. This tour looks at the amazing collections of the borough; you will have BOOKING the opportunity to see items ranging from Egyptian REQUIRED artefacts, some over 5000 years old, to grandfather clocks and works of art. They are based in Littleborough and exist to develop and share the joy of folk dance, music and song, stories and visual arts. Folk music and dance are experiencing a real resurgence in popularity at the moment: with scores of folk festivals all year round, and a plethora of young upcoming bands, Saturday 21 September: and packed to the rafters events with the time served acts and performers.
