Systematic and Abundance of Ground Beetles (Carabidae: Coleoptera) from District Poonch Azad Kashmir, Pakistan

Carabid beetles were collected with the help of pitfall traps and identified up to specie level with the help of available literature. We identified five species under three genera belonging to 3 sub-families. These sub families are Licininae, Carabinae, Brachininae and the species are Carabus caschmirensis, Chlaenius quadricolar, Pheropsophus sobrinus, Chlaenius laticollis, and Chlaenius hamifer. Carabus cashmirensis was the most abundant species. It was followed by Chlaenius quadricolar, Pheropsophus sobrinus, Chlaenius laticollis, and Chlenius hamifer. Introduction Poonch district is of subtropical high land type to temperate area of southern Azad Kashmir receives an average rainfall of 1400 – 1800mm annually. The temperature ranges from 2C˚ to 38C˚ during extreme winter it falls below 0C˚. Some of major plants as apple, some citrus, walnut, apricot and many others along with thick mixed forests of evergreen pine, deodar, blue pine cedar trees and fir are present in study area. Surveyed area hosts the family Carabidae while an estimation of 40,000 species throughout the world [1]. -

They are regarded as biological indicators in most of temperate zones in addition to the bio-control agents. Family Carabidae comprises nearly 40,000 species, 1927 genera worldwide. These ground beetles reside in the land habitats all over the world. The present study was aimed to explore the biodiversity of ground beetles from different ecological zones of Sukkur. For the present study about 160 specimens were collected from different localities of district Sukkur during the March 2019 - December-2019. Five species were identified into 03 Subfamilies i-e: Carabinae, Licininae, Brachininae, 03 genera and 05 species viz: Carabus cashmirensis, Chlaenius quadricolar, Chlaenius laticollis, Chlaenius hamifer are first time recorded from Sindh and 01 species Pheropsophus andrewesi , first time recorded from Pakistan. -

Messer1 Abstract A survey of Carabidae in the state of Wisconsin, U.S.A. yielded 87 species new to the state and incorporated 34 species previously reported from the state but that were not included in an earlier catalogue, bringing the total number of species to 489 in an annotated checklist. Collection data are provided in full for the 87 species new to Wisconsin but are limited to county occurrences for 187 rare species previously known in the state. Recent changes in nomenclature pertinent to the Wisconsin fauna are cited. ____________________ The Carabidae, commonly known as ‘ground beetles’, with 34, 275 described species worldwide is one of the three most species-rich families of extant beetles (Lorenz 2005). Ground beetles are often chosen for study because they are abun- dant in most terrestrial habitats, diverse, taxonomically well known, serve as sensitive bioindicators of habitat change, easy to capture, and morphologically pleasing to the collector. North America north of Mexico accounts for 2635 species which were listed with their geographic distributions (states and provinces) in the catalogue by Bousquet and Larochelle (1993). In Table 4 of the latter refer- ence, the state of Wisconsin was associated with 374 ground beetle species. That is more than the surrounding states of Iowa (327) and Minnesota (323), but less than states of Illinois (452) and Michigan (466). The total count for Minnesota was subsequently increased to 433 species (Gandhi et al. 2005). Wisconsin county distributions are known for 15 species of tiger beetles (subfamily Cicindelinae) (Brust 2003) with collection records documented for Tetracha virginica (Grimek 2009). -

Abstract An up-to-date checklist of the ground beetles of Sardinia and surrounding islets is presented. The presence on the island of 379 species is confirmed, while 41 are here considered of doubtful occurrence. All endemic elements are indicated and concise information is given on the Italian distribution of each species, together with the chorotype of recurrent pattern of main distribution. Key words: Carabidae, checklist, distribution, chorotypes, endemics, Sardinia, Italian fauna Introduction The first list of the ground beetles of Sardinia was published as an appendix in a paper by Casale and Vigna Taglianti (1996). Such list, with 351 species, was the result of the critical examination of all bibliographical data on Sardinia and especially of the material collected by Italian entomologists during more than thirty years of research trips in mainland Sardinia and its surrounding small islands and archipelagos. The nomenclature and taxonomy of that list followed the “Checklist delle specie della fauna italiana” (Vigna Taglianti 1993), the first attempt to update the list of Italian carabids after Magistretti’s (1965) catalogue. -

Our knowl edge about carabids is biased toward species living in north-temperate regions. Most carabids are predatory, consume a wide range of food types, and experience food shortages in the field. Feeding on both plant and animal material and scavenging are probably more significant than currently acknowledged. The most important mortality sources are abiotic factors and predators; pathogens and parasites can be important for some developmental stages. Although competition among larvae and adults does occur, the importance of competition as a com munity organization is not proven. INTRODUCTION This report records 29 genera and 48 species ofcarabid beetles from Micro nesia. It is based on material received mainly from Bishop Museum (BISHOP), with important but less-extensive lots received from the Field Natural History Museum (FM) and the United States National Museum (US). The first sets of specimens have been returned to the museums from which they were re ceived, with appropriate duplicates kept for the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ). Collections made in Micronesia, with names of collectors, are listed in J. L. Gressitt's (1954) Introduction to Insects of Micronesia, pages 193-206. I am very much indebted to Dr. Gressitt and his associates for supplying much of the material on which the present study is based and for aid in many ways, and I am specially indebted to Mrs. Mary Catron for work done with specimens and on the manuscript, and for making the drawings. The objective of this study was to quantify the influence of habitat type on the activity and distribution of ground beetles. Over five years, 13,654 ground beetles representing 107 different species were captured. Of these, 14 species represented 85 % of the captured beetles. Based on habitat use, we catego- rized 24 as generalist species, 14 as agricultural species, 12 as grassland species, 39 as prairie specialists, and 19 as wood- land species. Tallgrass prairie hosted a significantly more (P < 0.05) diverse assemblage of ground beetles than was found in the other habitats. Prairie also had a higher percentage of habitat specialists in its assemblage than did the less stable agricultural habitats which were dominated by generalists. NMS ordination and indicator species analysis revealed distinct ground beetle assemblages and identified indicator species in the various habitats, allowing species assemblages to be used as habitat indicators.
